Here's a cool video of the Turtles bouncing around outside of Pandora's Box (I assume the same one as Brian and Marilyn fame?) which I stumbled onto the other day and thought was semi-relevant!

Whatever happened to Mike's plan of "club kokomo"?

Long Beach Civic Auditorium. Site of the first concert New Years eve 1961. Site now the Long Beach Arena??? More info please.

The original Long Beach Civic Auditorium was demolished in 1975.  The Arena was built a decade or so earlier, adjacent and attached to the old auditorium, but the auditorium was then torn down to build the current convention center.  The arena is still there but there's nothing left of the original auditorium.  Old photos for anyone interested:

as it would have been in '61, the auditorium jutted out into rainbow lagoon

later, with current arena, lagoon being filled in

Not sure about the host but his heart seems to be in the right place. Another tour of Hawthorne in 3 parts. Dave appears.

Nice picture H, I was standing in the same spot back in February, did you manage to find the monument ok? I ask as google maps has it a block away from where it actually is.

We found it fine, although it is a little tricky.  Fortunately, we were familiar enough with the general area that it wasn't too tough to sort of track the freeway.

By the way, to anybody who thinks it's a bad neighborhood--it's not.  It's a very nice, pretty quiet neighborhood, especially considering it's proximity to the freeway.  But if you think it's a bad neighborhood, you are a sheltered rich person.

Wouldn't it be nice if we were older, then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together, in the kind of world where we belong?

Also where would the disused pier be as seen in the Tobler book pages 45-48. I have seen these pictures referred to as may be a Coca Cola shoot.

Stumbled on this story.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/635154125/Beach-Boys-are-fun-fun-fun-friends.html

Turns out the location of the shoot is in Utah. The Saltair Pavillion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltair,_Utah

http://bonnevillemariner.wordpress.com/2009/08/19/old-saltair-ruins-are-all-that-remain-of-coney-island-of-the-west/

Quote

This dichotomy is best illustrated by album art from a 1967 Beach Boy’s record.  Photos show the band hanging out at a decaying Saltair II.  My favorite shot is of the boys balancing atop a tall collection of pilings that once served as a dock.  Those pilings still stand, and given their isolation, they probably will forever.
The unknown guy is Bill Hesterman, a radio DJ at the time. Also on the cover of Vol 19 of Unsurpassed Masters.

Thanks to the KNAK Radio Spot Thread for this additional info.

4) Dead Man’s Curve (the spot referred to in the song) is located on Sunset near Groverton Place, (just north of the UCLA campus).  Just east on Sunset, near the intersection at Whittier Drive is where Jan Berry had the terrible accident in his Corvette Stingray 427

Are you talking about the near 90 degree turn just east of Groverton, right at Westwood Plaza?  I read somewhere that the actual stretch of road was altered after an accident involving Mel Blanc.  Any truth to this?

Never mind, I found it.  pmugghc's description is about 2.5 miles off.  The curve is just west of Whittier.

Not... exactly. Murry may have lived there, but he & Audree separated not long after they moved from Hawthorne to Whitter. Murry bought her a house a block or two from where he lived.
