Theme from "The Avengers". I think it has a more exciting sound compared to the Les Reed song.

Okay how about...

vs.

Lewis Boogie by Jerry Lee Lewis  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c31qo7xio3Y

I really like Bo Diddley, but I'm amazed at how good Lewis Boogie is. Going to have to give the edge to that.

Hear hear, but I think for a quiet, not well-known radio staish it fits right in.

Aww, The Yardbirds are one of my favourite bands....

Never cared for The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
Keith Relf has good voice, sure, but lack of quality songwriting & uninspiring covers is too much for me to like them. Tastes differ, what can ya do. Wink

Now, 'The Lion' IS one of my favorite ever songs. So snappy!

Frank Wilson, altho I didn't like both. But for the game's sake...

Peach, Plum, Pear, Joanna Newsom> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcHjAUhtSrk

vs.

They Don't Know, Tracy Ullman > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BilUu5Ip7s
If you ask me, I like Kirsty MacColl's version more. Bless her soul, she had beautiful voice.

I'm surprised at how good the Tracy Ullman song was. Definitely 'They Don't Know'! I didn't like Joanna Newsom's voice much...

Interesting. Most people who criticise The Yardbirds mainly bash Relf's singing (which I personally like). The band didn't write many of their own songs (especially in the early years with Clapton, and even Beck at first). But one song they did write - Shapes Of Things - is an absolute classic. Roger The Engineer is considered one of the great albums of the 60's, and there's no covers on that. Yeah, they did get mediocre with Page (though it's not Page's fault), but there's still the brilliant Think About It. As for their covers, I'm A Man and The Train Kept-A Rollin' are superb, and those are just the ones that come off the top of my head. More impressively, they were virtually the heaviest band of the mid-60's, and their rave-ups are nothing short of incredible. Five Live Yardbirds - fifty years on - still sounds clear and were incredibly heavy for it's time period - more so than The Stones and The Animals.

But anyway, as you said, tastes differ. To each their own, I suppose.

Black Dio Sabbath's Paranoid, although Ronnie Dio's Red Caps was interesting in an obscure way, but musically it's kinda...blech. Come to think of it Dio singing Paranoid isn't very convincing either. Kind of an Ozzy-only song. But Tony and Geezer are still rockin' this version.

By order:

2Mike Garneau: you're right. Joanna's voice is the chief reason I can't get into her music. She *has* talent & I actually liked the melody of "Peach, Plum, Pear". But that squeaky mousey awful voice... no thanks.

Re Tracy Ullman, that song was written by Kirsty MacColl, who was a friend of Tracy & sang back-ups on her version. Here's original sung by Kirsty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIsyQ2qCDQ8

2Rei: well, I lied. Checking up my playlist, I listened to "For Your Love" & really liked. Will see if they've got "Roger the Engineer" on musicmp3.spb.org.

Last post otm; Ozzy owned it. Dio was like a 5th wheel in Black Sabbath. Should've stuck in "Rainbow" & other side bands of his.

Bowie all the way. Great song, Boys Keep Swinging is. As for the Cure, I've been trying to accept the Cure for decades now. But it never clicks. I'm just not a Robert Smith fan.

I'm voting for John Lennon's 'Mother', even though it's painful to listen to. Pink Floyd's 'Mother' is one of my least favorite songs from The Wall. It's no Goodbye Blue Sky...

Captain Lou; like most of NRBQ, it's an incredibly jolly song. Story goes, Lou MC'd some of their shows, so the band 'owed' him a song.

Pizzicato Five-Baby Love Child is the better song in my opinion.

Range Rover, thanks for the info about Lou and NRBQ. I didn't know that the Captain MC'd for them. I have the NRBQ 'Captain Lou' single with 'Boardin' House Pie' on the flip side. Do you have this one RR? The picture sleeve has a bloody Captain Lou on the cover (razor blade cuts I'm assuming). I saw NRBQ last year in Pawtucket RI. They still rock it!

Okay, which Captain wins this match?

Going with Jeff Beck's version. I love that bass sound. Sounds like a Rickenbacker, my favorite type of bass.

In regards to While Smashing The Car, yeah it's a great tune, ain't it? The Captain is way underrated in my opinion. Check out his album Mad Cows And Englishmen, every song is a knock-out.

I would've voted for Let's Misbehave by Irving Aaronson and his Commanders. Nice slideshow video in that one. Not a bad tune either.

PAPERBACK WRITER all the way! I think it's a better song than 19th Nervous Breakdown. Also I like the guitar sound better in Paperback Writer.

Keeping with popular 60s music that doesn't even need youtube links, howzabout this one...
