Title: Song vs. Song Game
Post by: analogdemon on January 19, 2006, 11:16:30 AM
OK here's how this works.  Name two Beach Boys songs, then the next person will say which one they think would beat the other in a bloody no-holds-barred duel.  So for instance, I'll say "Song A vs. Song B".  The next person will come along and say "Song A", then post their own two songs for the next person.  No attacking people's choices!! :)  Let the game begin:

No, he isn't. That song is a drag, a real drag. Don't hear what is good - let alone "the greatest" - about it. So next time, don't forget to add "in my opinion".

If we had to write "in my opinion" after every sentence that could not be stated as an objective fact then we would have to write it or say it after every sentence, in my opinion.

It's nice to see that you made friends here etc., but in this case, there's no need to defend hypehat. It's not like I was insulting him or sth. Just noticed he often states his opinions as facts, like everyone must agree with his musical taste. Hence, my objection to his post about Overnight Sensation beating every song suggested in this thread. I don't agree with it at all.

My post was totally harmless, so I don't get the use of sarcastic tone in response to that at all. Division into 3 fragments was unnecessary.

Also -- don't you think it's funny that people always assume an opinion is being passed off as fact when it's an opinion that they disagree with?
In case of hypehat, it didn't seem like it. If it was that I just disagree with one's opinion, I wouldn't say what I'd said because wouldn't it be boring if we had the same mindset? But anyway, hypehat already clarified his habit, and in a very polite way. Thank you, hh!

I quite like both songs, but I'm going to have to side with The Singer Not The Song. Memphis Tennessee is good, but doesn't stand out from the album it comes from. In fact the majority of the songs from their debut album sounds very similar to Memphis Tennessee that you have to be familiar with it enough to differentiate between them.

Interesting. Most people who criticise The Yardbirds mainly bash Relf's singing (which I personally like). The band didn't write many of their own songs (especially in the early years with Clapton, and even Beck at first). But one song they did write - Shapes Of Things - is an absolute classic. Roger The Engineer is considered one of the great albums of the 60's, and there's no covers on that. Yeah, they did get mediocre with Page (though it's not Page's fault), but there's still the brilliant Think About It. As for their covers, I'm A Man and The Train Kept-A Rollin' are superb, and those are just the ones that come off the top of my head. More impressively, they were virtually the heaviest band of the mid-60's, and their rave-ups are nothing short of incredible. Five Live Yardbirds - fifty years on - still sounds clear and were incredibly heavy for it's time period - more so than The Stones and The Animals.

But anyway, as you said, tastes differ. To each their own, I suppose.

Black Dio Sabbath's Paranoid, although Ronnie Dio's Red Caps was interesting in an obscure way, but musically it's kinda...blech. Come to think of it Dio singing Paranoid isn't very convincing either. Kind of an Ozzy-only song. But Tony and Geezer are still rockin' this version.

2Mike Garneau: you're right. Joanna's voice is the chief reason I can't get into her music. She *has* talent & I actually liked the melody of "Peach, Plum, Pear". But that squeaky mousey awful voice... no thanks.

Re Tracy Ullman, that song was written by Kirsty MacColl, who was a friend of Tracy & sang back-ups on her version. Here's original sung by Kirsty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIsyQ2qCDQ8

2Rei: well, I lied. Checking up my playlist, I listened to "For Your Love" & really liked. Will see if they've got "Roger the Engineer" on musicmp3.spb.org.

By order:

Last post otm; Ozzy owned it. Dio was like a 5th wheel in Black Sabbath. Should've stuck in "Rainbow" & other side bands of his.

Yeah, For Your Love's great... written by Graham Gouldman of 10cc.
And I much prefer the Gladiolas version over Joan Baez's...

Bowie all the way. Great song, Boys Keep Swinging is. As for the Cure, I've been trying to accept the Cure for decades now. But it never clicks. I'm just not a Robert Smith fan.

Somebody or Nobody. Psych Style.

I'm voting for John Lennon's 'Mother', even though it's painful to listen to. Pink Floyd's 'Mother' is one of my least favorite songs from The Wall. It's no Goodbye Blue Sky...

Okay, step in the ring and hit the turnbuckles!

Captain Lou; like most of NRBQ, it's an incredibly jolly song. Story goes, Lou MC'd some of their shows, so the band 'owed' him a song.

Pizzicato Five-Baby Love Child is the better song in my opinion.

Range Rover, thanks for the info about Lou and NRBQ. I didn't know that the Captain MC'd for them. I have the NRBQ 'Captain Lou' single with 'Boardin' House Pie' on the flip side. Do you have this one RR? The picture sleeve has a bloody Captain Lou on the cover (razor blade cuts I'm assuming). I saw NRBQ last year in Pawtucket RI. They still rock it!

Okay, which Captain wins this match?

I would've voted for Let's Misbehave by Irving Aaronson and his Commanders. Nice slideshow video in that one. Not a bad tune either.

PAPERBACK WRITER all the way! I think it's a better song than 19th Nervous Breakdown. Also I like the guitar sound better in Paperback Writer.

Keeping with popular 60s music that doesn't even need youtube links, howzabout this one...

Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundations

See You In September by The Happenings

BAmBU Dennis, in regards to: Just Like Gene Autry (A Foxtrot) by Moby Grape VS. Vera by Pink Floyd....

The Moby Grape link you posted is actually 'Nantucket Sleighride Pt. 2' by Mountain. I absolutely love Mountain's heavy sound and would certainly vote 'Vera' off if you actually meant it to be Mountain vs Floyd. But Moby Grape's 'Just Like Gene Autry' sounds like a psychedelic band getting drunk while spinning an old 78 rpm. It's interesting but I feel seasick after I listen to it. So the winner is 'Vera' by Pink Floyd.

vs.

Joey Dee & the Starliters "Peppermint Twist"> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-zXqSwnvi8

All you people avoiding this thread are missing out on a heavy dose of fun. Don't you like playing games? Oh well.

My choice is obvious, the Russian song. I'm very proud that we've got such good singers that could easily compete with any western music folk. And I'm being totally objective here, coz I don't have strong patriotic spirit or whatev.

cont. au bord's fashion "Songs don't need youtube links"

Fool's Garden "Lemon Tree"

vs.

Pet Shop Boys "Go West" (I used to like this when I was little, just cool military beat and back-ups)

I paired these because I always thought the leads in both bands sound eerily similar. I thought it's the same person. Did anyone think so?

Whenever I think of "Go West" I think not only of the Village People's original, but about the clip below.  It's labeled "Official Music Video" but I think it's an appearance on German TV just before Victor Willis quit as lead singer.  David "Scar" Hodo is missing his hard hat (and his shades) in it, so you know something strange has taken place before shooting. It may well have involved Randy "Cowboy" Jones who looks like he's been raising his customary heck someplace, even more than usual.  Pretty funny stuff.

St George and the Dragonet (supposedly a faster-selling Capitol 45 than I Want To Hold Your Hand):

vs its more politically oriented flipside, Little Blue Riding Hood:

(There's also his "Christmas Dragnet" but it's way too early for that one.)

Funny clip indeed, I like to mock people dressed like clowns, ha! but that version blew, not as catchy as the cover I talked of.

Back to track. That's very interesting, I love sketches. The rabbit/ dragon one is entertaining.

"Want some sugar?" type of songs: I'd choose neither, tbh:

Bobby Vee "Take Good Care"

vs.

The Ronettes "When I Saw"

As much as I like The Ronettes, I have to go with Take Good Care.

Time to Gnome it up with:

The Laughing Gnome - David Bowie

vs.

The Gnome - Pink Floyd

"The Gnome" is one of the few duds on "Gates of Dawn". Such a bore. David Bowie tune is VERY funny, I like off-the-cuff crazy stuff with looping & so on.

looney tunes:

7-11 "Slurp Slurp"> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px1Tn0LTqcs

vs.

4 Instants - Bogattini> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gSb-v2LceM

both have silly slurping noises.

Going with Merrell Fankhauser's Tampa Run because I like its fast booming beat. By For Me The Rain is a terrific song too though.

PSYCHEDELIC BYRDS

Change Is Now, always.

Late 60's Hollies

"Gasoline Alley Bred"            http://youtu.be/ft0joF9IicQ
               Vs.
"Too Young to Be Married"    http://youtu.be/WtIiL7Tj_HI

No takers still? "Alley Bred" for me. The other's too sappy.

-Welcome Home-

"I'm Carrying", Macca> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us6icN9j-1w

vs.

"The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. I", NMH> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LULmbLlPvVk
(both songs are high class imo)

Actually gonna have to go with King Of Carrot Flowers, much as I love Macca.

Come And See Her - The Easybeats

vs.

Boris The Spider - The Who

I'm voting for the Ox on this one.  The Who with Boris.

Great bass riff.  The Who never get any credit for inventing death metal.

Next?? you must offer 2 songs so we can pick one of 'em. Hence the game name.

Sorry about that.

How about some late 60s, heavy pyschadelic covers

Vanilla Fudge - You Keep Me Hanging On

vs

Deep Purple (MK1) - River Deep Mountain High

I'm curious to know what you would have picked from my match BTW

Giving the edge to You Keep Me Hanging On.

River Deep Mountain High - Eric Burdon And The Animals

vs.

River Deep Mountain High - Ike And Tina Turner

I agree with you.  While Vanilla Fudge excelled with covers, Purple did their best work later on with original music.

I'm giving the edge of River Deep, Mountain High to The Animals.  I'm a bigger fan of The Animals than Tina Turner.

Speaking of The Animals, here's some late 60s Animals:

San Franciscan Nights

vs.

Sky Pilot

"San Franciscan Nights". Next:

"Brady Bunch" theme song

vs.

"Partridge Family" theme song (surely, everybody's familiar with these 2 shows?)

I'm probably one of the few Americans in my age group to watch neither of these programs. But I heard those theme songs a lot, particularly the Brady Bunch one.

I prefer the Partridge Family theme song. It's more interesting musically, and it harkens back to the inspiration for the show, the Cowsills.

Jolly good. To continue game, list 2 songs, then next poster picks which they like.

Hard to pick songs.

Decided to pick 2 favorites from my wild days in the mid 80s. They are great in your face songs. If you are unable to find these online I'll try to get to a computer to post links, but assume that they should be easy to find as they were hits.

The songs:
In the Middle of the Road - The Pretenders
Would I Lie to You? - The Eurythmics

Chrissie Hynde and Annie Lennox were both in top form.

Here you go, E...

In the Middle of the Road - The Pretenders

Would I Lie to You? - The Eurythmics

Excellent songs both. ;=)

Either song isn't my bag but pick Eurythmics - much better voice (anything is than Chrissie Hynde's).

"Look Through Any Window" by Hollies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odzYoYk9lWI

vs.

"(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" by Otis Redding https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISxskvJ9FwI

Hollies song is good but Otis Redding's song is iconic and one of my favorites. I remember feeling sad hearing the song back then since Redding was killed in a plane crash shortly after recording it.
