Creedence "Travellin' Band".
This!
If I understand correctly, you also mean artists that came after the 50s and not 50s artists that recorded well into later decades?

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST
To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I'd love to join in here, gh, but my '50s rock and roll heart lies exactly there--in the '50s. Perhaps it's worth reminding later rock and rollers what they are up against:

It occurs to me now that "Jenny Take A Ride" by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels would make a valiant contender:

Yes! Some of those early '60s "baroque" doo wop cuts would definitely fit the bill.
Doctor Feelgood (the UK band, not the US singer) did some great "pub" rock and roll in their day:

Bay City Rollers "Shang-A-Lang" fits? Or it's popsike?
Smiley Smilers: Agree, the tune is suitable to thread subject.
