But would anyone really object if he changed tack mid tour? Say if he started doing only a selection from PS (which might change nightly), interspersed with everything else? I very much doubt it. Surely most of his audience are only too happy to see their idol alive and reasonably well. And enjoying himself making music with his band.

In most cases, shows and tickets and venues don't warranty *what* will be played. So if Brian was just doing a regular tour, he could come out and open with "Slow Ride" and then play the entire "Appetite for Destruction" album and then leave the stage.

*However*, that's not the case on this tour. The shows are being sold to promoters as "Pet Sounds" shows, with the promotional info often specifically stating the album will be played in full. So they are warrantying both to promoters and ticket buyers that they're getting the full album. This is borne out by the fact that for shows last year and this year where they've had to play a shortened set (festivals, some casino venues, etc.), they shorten the *first* set and then still do PS in full.

Exactly.

Crazy, I know you were kidding but ironically enough my daughter made a comment a few days ago about Brian singing Slow Ride LOL

Heck, I'd rather hear Brian cover "Slow Ride" than a Jerry Lee Lewis or Chuck Berry song at this stage. So have at it Brian! Throw in some ELO for good measure.

Ha! ELO is one of Jaymie's favorite bands, and "Strange Magic" is her favorite song by anybody. ..

I think "slow ride" should play as BW enters the stage with his shuffle to the piano! Grin

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

I have not been to a Brian show since 2008. Reviews of his shows on this Pet Sounds Tour seem to lean toward "grading on a curve." Brian has verbalized a desire to record a "rock and roll album." At this point on his life, his needs should be attended to closely. His shows on the first Pet Sounds, Smile, and Lucky Old Sun tours were stellar in quality. But then...he was in his early to mid 60s.

Maybe he has fonder memories of pre-PS at this stage in his life. I remember Bob Hanes before he died wishing that the Fun-In-The-Sun era was treated with as much reverence as PS and SMiLE.  Bob also used to worry that Brian was being typecast as the "PS and SMiLE Guy" when the catalog as a whole has such great depth.

It's ironic that Brian seems more disengaged from the PS material than a typical/random show from past years, yet *more* engaged by the first set of songs than recent times. It's almost like, if they could jettison the PS set and do more stuff that Brian's into, it would be a mind-blowingly high-energy show for Brian.

I'd have to think anyone would be kind of sick of a full album night after night after they're up to probably over 130 performances since last year. They've got roughly over 40 shows to go on this tour.

I agree to a certain extent, but it's not like some of the other well worn hits aren't trotted out night after night. Why is he bored of performing Pet Sounds, but not California Girls, Good Vibrations, the hot rod and surfing hits?

Good question.   Maybe because he has less leads then on the rest of the show...? I honestly don't know.

I remember in the mid-2000s when Brian started doing songs for the first time like "Shut Down", some fans complained, and I pointed out that one has to remember that Brian *wasn't* on tour for most of all of those years when the touring BBs were running through those hits over and over. Mike Kowalski and Ed Carter and Mike Meros had played some of those songs more times than Brian had. So I think it was (and is) cool for him to reclaim in a sense even those early songs that he had a hand in as well.

So that lack of being as worn out on those songs, coupled with indeed perhaps fondly remembering that early era, is probably part of the reason Brian digs those songs for concerts. He has also mentioned that he isn't into singing the verbose songs these days like "Surf's Up" and "Busy Doin' Nothin'", so that might also be a reason he's more likely to do early stuff as opposed to later-era stuff.

Also probably explains why The Night Was So Young was cut so quickly as well.

went to the BW concert 5 27 17 pantages th hollywood ca... OUTSTANDING  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..  Brian and the band were on FIRE..!! Opened with H+V..  New songs played ive never heard live.. Feel Flows.. She knows me too well..Salt lake city.. Car medley with  Al on lead vocals.. LDC shut down honda.. .. Great to also hear.. Wake the world.. Add some music.. California.. Do you wanna dance.... BW sang the whole show with hardly any talk/singing like i heard in Indio ca 1st date of tour... Nick is using a Bass//Guitar ? on PS on a few cuts.. Looks like a Jaguar body with a long neck.. With a more treble bass sound than Bob Lizick and playing different lines as Bob..  The pantages is a very uncomfortable place to see a show..Seats are very small and no room between rows to speak of.. I will NEVER go to that venue EVER again..period

Does anyone know how strict they are being about the meet and greet? I know he is only signing books, but I was wondering if I'd get in trouble for bringing a Pet Sounds cd and a sharpie to get a signature from Brian and or Al. Maybe if I'm just a kid they'll cut me some slack??? Cheesy

I'm glad to hear that Brian was singing more than he was at the San Diego show.  I really am rooting for him to do well and to enjoy touring.

Updated some setlists in the top post, and also added one new date, a late August date in Lincoln, CA that is curiously right in the middle of the break between the end of the European leg and the final North American leg. I'm curious if more dates around that time frame will be announced. Normally I'd say yes, but they apparently do sometimes book one single show in the middle of a month or longer break, as evidenced by tonight's show in Honolulu.

It wouldn't hurt to try! What would they do, confiscate your CD and kick you out? Listen, I got VIP tickets about a year ago when Brian was still doing personal signings. I considered bringing my vinyl copy of SMiLE to get Brian and Al to sign. But I decided not to at the last moment because I didn't want to hold it the entire concert. That is now my biggest regret in life. I could have gotten my most favorite album signed by my musical idol, but I chose not to because I was being lazy. This is the kind of thing that keeps you up at 2:00 in the morning! BUT I digress.

Bottom line, yeah, bring the CD!

Okay, so the Honolulu setlist has been posted:

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/brian-wilson/2017/neal-s-blaisdell-concert-hall-honolulu-hi-1be4b57c.html

Is it possible they really didn't do "Help Me Rhonda?" If so, it might be the first full length gig Al has done since the 60s or 70s where Rhonda wasn't performed.

It's only 9:45 in the Netherlands right now, and this setlist appears to be a bit garbled and possibly being updated as the show continues, but *IF* this is accurate, it appears Brian may have added "Aren't You Glad" to the setlist this evening:
