Interesting take on Dennis and Manson. The facts are somewhat off but Dennis may indeed have gone a different direction had he not met Charles.

Interesting thought in the movie - Dennis thinking that Manson's music, its rawness, could change the world. Makes me wonder if Brian felt that way about Smiley Smile? The movie is funny in that it treats the subject of the BBs like it was still '64/'65. You wouldn't think that they had released Pet Sounds or Smiley Smile by that time going by the movie.

Aspects of it are real well made - the two guys acting strike me as good in their roles -  but it's rather disturbing. Dennis seems perpetually spaced, and obviously can't afford a shirt.  And the image of the floating corpse that bookends it? No thanks...

Here's a cover of Melt Away that I spent the better part of last night recording and mixing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGo_yh9sCZo

and for better quality:

http://vimeo.com/9962952

The description I added to the video:

This is an instrumental cover of Melt Away from Brian Wilson's 1988 self titled solo album. A friend of mine suggested I try writing some instrumentals, so to get in the zone, I covered one of my favorite overlooked BW songs and recorded a "vocal-less" version. My guitar is simulating the lead vocal line. My inspiration was those "Easy Listening" jazz LPs from the 60s that covered the "big hits of the day." Add in some samples of the Roland Cr-78 drum machine for that extra retro flavor, and there you have it! It was a fun challenge that only took one sleepless night, and now I look forward to writing some of my own instrumentals.

Lemme know what you guys think! Smiley

Thanks rocker!  Glad you liked it.  And thanks for the thread tip; I was on a couple of the Pet Sounds Mailing List "Net Sounds" albums, so but that was yeeears ago.  I'd love to be part of this new compilation!  Maybe I'll try another song with vocals, just for variety.

Can anybody tell me what the heck Carl is talking about, at around the 37 second mark? For the life of me, I can not hear this part on the studio recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3NrEk0f6tk&feature=related

Do whatever you want to do. If you read through the whole thread, there are already some songs mentioned that were recorded. I've now listened to 3 (four if you include the one from my band) and it seems to be fun. And of course you can also contribute more than one... Everything else should be discussed in that thread....

Part of the vocals in the chorus. "sail on, sail on, sailor"

A different mix of "My Diane". You can hear Dennis' vocal clearer
