Welcome back, one and all, to the first thread of the Beach Boys Solo Survivor.

The Solo Survivors are going to tackle the main solo albums of members of the Beach Boys. This will not include solo albums released prior to membership in the Beach Boys. This will also not include works done by members who were participating in different groups (ie David Marks in The Moon or The Marksmen) nor will it include "Best Of" albums or rehash albums (ie Summertime Cruisin' by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston will not be included. This also means we will not be including Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE or I Just Wasn't Made For These Times.) Lastly, we will not be including EP's or Unreleased Albums.

Some of the Solo Survivor albums may be hard to come across. Smilers are encouraged to locate legal copies of the solo albums. I expect these rounds to go quicker with less voting than normal. No big deal.

So without further ado...

Quote
Carl Wilson is the self-titled debut album of The Beach Boys band member, Carl Wilson. The youngest of the three Wilson brothers in the band, Carl Wilson was reportedly at this time unhappy with the progress being made by The Beach Boys creatively. So Carl, just as his brother Dennis had a few years earlier, signed a contract with James William Guercio's CBS-distributed Caribou Records. The album was released on March 27, 1981 and peaked at number 185 on the Billboard 200. Of the eight tracks on the album, seven of them are written by Carl Wilson and Myrna Smith, who was the wife of Carl's then manager Jerry Schilling, with track six being written by Carl, Myrna and Michael Sun.

Per the usual, vote for your LEAST FAVORITE TRACK. The track with most votes will be voted off.

Tally on July 18th.

Same here, I haven't given it a spin for a year or so - can we have the tally on the 19th?

At your descretion of course

Yawn. What do you mean Carl made a solo album without a single memorable song on it? I think even "Heaven" is a weak song so I will stay out of this.

I'm retracting my vote. I don't know this album well enough to judge the tunes.

What Carl did in 1981, leaving the Beach Boys and going solo was a Bold move.  He made a statement with those club shows, as it couldn't have been for the money - even working as an opening act.  He put his foot down and quit the band to do them, rather than what Dennis did.  Now we can only wish Dennis had done the same thing.  The show I saw just before he left was a band trying to hold on to him, giving him a chance to play tracks I hadn't seen them do since the mid-70's, and some I had never seen them play.  I did not know at the time he was leaving for sure, it was just a rumor on the floor that night.  I feel very lucky to have seen that show.  And anyone seeing the shows on his return had to notice.  They were tighter, you could tell they were rehearsing more (new material = work), and Carl was giving the eye to any one of them if they made a mistake, as he would continue to do.  Deep cuts started showing up in the set lists aplenty, including some not written by the band - and I don't mean Jan and Dean tunes.
I Love this album, and it will be tough when I get to the end.  For now though, there are a couple of weak tracks.  Like this one:
"The Grammy" - Mostly due to the lyrics.
