Title: Beach Boys Solo Survivor #3 Winner: Carl Wilson's HEAVEN
Post by: pixletwin on July 16, 2014, 10:39:12 AM
Welcome back, one and all, to the first thread of the Beach Boys Solo Survivor.

The Solo Survivors are going to tackle the main solo albums of members of the Beach Boys. This will not include solo albums released prior to membership in the Beach Boys. This will also not include works done by members who were participating in different groups (ie David Marks in The Moon or The Marksmen) nor will it include "Best Of" albums or rehash albums (ie Summertime Cruisin' by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston will not be included. This also means we will not be including Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE or I Just Wasn't Made For These Times.) Lastly, we will not be including EP's or Unreleased Albums.

Some of the Solo Survivor albums may be hard to come across. Smilers are encouraged to locate legal copies of the solo albums. I expect these rounds to go quicker with less voting than normal. No big deal.

So without further ado...

Quote
Carl Wilson is the self-titled debut album of The Beach Boys band member, Carl Wilson. The youngest of the three Wilson brothers in the band, Carl Wilson was reportedly at this time unhappy with the progress being made by The Beach Boys creatively. So Carl, just as his brother Dennis had a few years earlier, signed a contract with James William Guercio's CBS-distributed Caribou Records. The album was released on March 27, 1981 and peaked at number 185 on the Billboard 200. Of the eight tracks on the album, seven of them are written by Carl Wilson and Myrna Smith, who was the wife of Carl's then manager Jerry Schilling, with track six being written by Carl, Myrna and Michael Sun.

Tally on July 18th.

Yawn. What do you mean Carl made a solo album without a single memorable song on it? I think even "Heaven" is a weak song so I will stay out of this.

What Carl did in 1981, leaving the Beach Boys and going solo was a Bold move.  He made a statement with those club shows, as it couldn't have been for the money - even working as an opening act.  He put his foot down and quit the band to do them, rather than what Dennis did.  Now we can only wish Dennis had done the same thing.  The show I saw just before he left was a band trying to hold on to him, giving him a chance to play tracks I hadn't seen them do since the mid-70's, and some I had never seen them play.  I did not know at the time he was leaving for sure, it was just a rumor on the floor that night.  I feel very lucky to have seen that show.  And anyone seeing the shows on his return had to notice.  They were tighter, you could tell they were rehearsing more (new material = work), and Carl was giving the eye to any one of them if they made a mistake, as he would continue to do.  Deep cuts started showing up in the set lists aplenty, including some not written by the band - and I don't mean Jan and Dean tunes.
I Love this album, and it will be tough when I get to the end.  For now though, there are a couple of weak tracks.  Like this one:
"The Grammy" - Mostly due to the lyrics.

I really do like all of the songs on this album, but Hurry Love and The Grammy are my least favorites. I just love this album's sparse production. Someone needs to find some live tapes of Carl and his band, though - live, these songs just smoked!

The Grammy Awards in 1982, I was watching that night...right.  Their ideas on great music in 1981 were Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" (Rock Vocal) - yawn.
John and Yoko for Double Fantasy (Album of the Year) - wonder why that was?  Like Carl's album, half the songs are great.
And let's not forget Record and Song of the Year:  "Bette Davis Eyes" - double yawn.
To end on a positive note, Bill Withers, Ralph MacDonald and William Salter won for writing best R&B Song:  "Just the Two of Us"
Now:
"What You Gonna Do About Me?" - Carl's album got absolutely nothing.  Most voters had never heard it.  "Jessie's Girl"...really?

Seems So Long Ago - what a yawner and much worse than the Grammy (I know), and I was suprised to see how maligned the Grammy was to the tastes of many smilers.

Agree with the comment about these tracks need to be heard recorded live  - groovey stuff that I suspect lost a fair bit of energy in the studio for whatevs reason.

"Hold Me"  Still missing "The Right Lane" - the best rocker on the long-player.  The first time I heard it, I thought Steve Stills was on lead guitar.

I don't find Hurry Love any more of a 'well known' drag than Heaven.

Round#2 - The Right Lane July 21
Round#3 - What You Gonna Do About Me July 23

My favorite track, Heaven.

Getting to this:
"Bright Lights"
"The Right Lane" was on my stronger songs list and hate to see it taken out so early, it was a powerful stand-out in the live shows.  But.  I think we all know where this is headed...
Yep, down the S-bend then straight on 'til oblivion
Right.  Stop right there...
I'm much too old to try that.  I meant this:
"Heaven"

Please can we include Blondie's solo albums? Pretty please? An excuse to let them be heard by a wider audience that needs to hear this great music. Pretty pretty please?

If you can provide links where we might heat them, why not?

I agree. I think it was wrong to skip a solo album which fits all the criteria. Poor Blondie   :(

Nobody would vote because hardly any of us have ever seen it. Let alone heard it.

Still multiple new CD copies on Amazon UK at fair prices and the whole album available for digital download. Admittedly tough to come across on YouTube. Heartily recommended for any fan, especially of the rocker CATP tracks. Seems shame to consign one of the very first solo albums by a Beach Boy to the remaindered bin… is Blondie the new lost Beach Boy?  :o
