Okay, you're allowed to have that opinion.  But this doesn't warrant its own thread.

The Beach Boys are the best! Wink

The Velvet Underground are better

they're both amazing, its not possible to compare such legendary bands saying that one is definitely better than the other. you might think the VU are a better band, but how can you REALLY compare dark, gritty proto-punk to say, Pet Sounds? Only way I can think is that both bands were channeling something special.

There are a few posters on here that seem to think that talking about music is like talking about a highschool football match.

The Beach Boys IMO are a "meat and potatoes band." The productions, compositions, and performances are perfect but their lyrics lack the creativity of other great 60s artists like The Beatles and VU

That's too big a generalization. Lyrics pre-Pet Sounds are typical of 60's pop, but Pet Sounds has lyrics as good as any Beatles song...Smile has lyrics that are unlike any other album.

Pet Sounds has lyrics as good as any Beatles song
Beatles had their share of dumb lyrics as well, for instance, "Obladi Oblada" (silly Jamaican gibberish), "Why Don't We Do It in the Road" (just a boring repetition of the title), Wild Honey Pie (though I love it musically & vocally), "Savoy Truffle" (same), "Octopus's Garden" (same), "What's the New, Mary Jane?" (plain awful, musically too), "I Am the Walrus" (chain of disconnected words) etc. etc.

That's sorta the point, though. Besides, that song's not really about the words as much as it is about the singing. He's expressive, emotive, and really gets the point across.
Now, if you had said "Birthday"...

Pet Sounds is still pretty basic lyrics-wise. Stuff like Here Today is just as teenybopper as anything on All Summer Long... The lyrics don't approach the imagination of the Beatles in the same era.

After Smile collapsed the Beach Boys lyrics became almost uniformly terrible, besides some of Brian's songs. I love Love You and all, but the The Beach Boys lyrics are there only to fill in the gaps...
