Cool sweet tales, girls. Ta both.
2Buckethead: who do you like the best - Bronwen, Mercy, Smokie, Isis? Usually people with many cats favor few/ single cat especially.

I actually don't have a favorite. I feel closest, however, to Isis Marie. She is so lacking in self-confidence and lives in perpetual fear of being stared
at by her niece, little Bronwen, that she lives on my kitchen hutch. She only comes down when I am on the sofa so that she can safely snuggle
with me. She knows that I will yell at Bronwen if she starts to cause trouble! Do you have a favorite kitty?

Bronwen's really cool name. It's little like Brunhilde, the girl in the legend about Siegfried.

Fave cat is current cat. Old family cats that passed by, they were jolly good as well. There used to live cat with white tummy, legs, arms & lower face but various hues of hazelnut in the back & upper half face. Smb. dubbed him you know what? Scamback aka Shcamback. Where they got it is big puzzle. It was good cat if angry at times. He could loudly mew if you didn't get him out to walk in street. He really liked walking, could go missing few days, then get back thru jumping to balcony. But he wasn't strong cat, couldn't fight dogs, would run away as cats do. & frankly, I didn't get attached to this cat much. The next cat I did. Many sweet cherished memories. He's generic "tuxedo" cat, i.e. black & white. I dubbed him Murzik (said "Moor-zick"). Murzik & Vasya - popular names here to dub tomcat. Murzik differed than Scamback. He's cuter, sweeter, yet mischievous. He didn't run away when seeing dogs - they ran, if not, didn't bite him, just stood there beside cat, ashamed, shy, puzzled, not daring to bark & attack the cat. Each summer, we used to drive in grandpa's motor boat to dacha, I carried Murzik in backpack, to change scenery for cat. He really liked being in nature, walking in forest. I'd see him casing the joint, looking around to get into adventure there. He'd observe the location. Past few days, we were about to leave, I didn't find Murzik, we went back without him. I didn't like it, said to mother can you ask smb. staying in dacha, the neighbors, find him & bring back to town? She rang former classmate who stayed in dacha. The lady said OK. & good news - she did. Swell sport, that cat. Today's cat is the best, by character he's mellow version of Murzik. He doesn't like being outdoors, instead being in safety in the house. But he does look for trouble. I'd like to get girl cat but hate dealing with separating mother & children when she gets knocked up (can't afford to live with many cats). Besides, family usually adopted boy pets (f.ex. there lived dog during "Murzik" era, boy too). It's been like this, loyal tradition, if you will. But really girl would be nice. Do you like when cats sit like bread? Is catloaf your fave cat pose? Don't you think they look adorable, just like this smiley :D?

Oh, what a cool story about the backpacking kitty! I can just close my eyes and visualize the who thing - car trip, dacha, adventures in the woods. I like the "bread"pose. My Mercy does that a lot. My male cat's occasional sleeping position is more striking, where he lies on his back with front paws straight up in the air and legs spread apart. I know, a bit porno-like, but very cute. Bronwen is a Welsh name that means white-breasted.She looked all black at birth, but a couple of days later (and after I named her), I saw a white spot on her chest. It's much easier when a cat is happy indoors. My veterinarian told me, though, that some just seem to be happiest when they are permitted to frolic in nature and explore. Still, I worry. Smoky always comes back, but his son never returned last September. I'm hoping that someone took him in - he loves people and is quite affectionate and fun. I enjoy having my female cats, having only human sons and brothers. BTW, I've been reading a great deal about the Romanov's extended family. Grand Duke Nicholai Mikhailovich had his kitty with him during his captivity with his brothers, nephews, cousins. He carried it with him to his execution, handing it to one of the captors just before he was shot and asked that the man take care of it. Joy, Tsarevichalexei's dog, who accompanied him and the Tsar to visit soldiers in military hospitals (he was the first therapy dog, I'm thinking) was the only other family pet to survive the executions. A White Army officer recognized Joy in the town (having visited the Alexander Palace many times) and took the dog to give to George V. Joy lived on the king's estate for the rest of his life.Gotta love our furry friends! Do you/have you had any dogs?

You're better than I am, Gunga Din. I'm bored by many things-Russian, really. I didn't read that tale before. It's cute.

Well, it's not dog topic but since you ask, the family did have dogs - 3 dogs in different times. My favorite used to be the dog during the "Murzik" era. He's very joyful, mischievous like Murzik & he too was intimidated by the cat. They got along famously, kind of. He's complete white, with tail going cartwheels or what it's called, the round upwards tail? His name was if you translate Fluffster. He used to run around biting people sometimes but with zero malice, he just couldn't get his energy & joy into sth. good. Grandpa disapproved & even planned to shoot him with hunter's gun. But granny made him at the last minute to change mind. Thus he didn't shoot. Then truck ran Fluffster & he died. Maybe he got too enthusiastic & didn't check the road. I wouldn't adopt dog now since I live with cat, can't afford taking care of 2 pets. It's jolly expensive. Cat will do. Besides, I like cats better than dogs. Back to topic, you got funny cat stories to tell? Yours or smb. else's?

I have a couple of funny cat stories.

My sister and her husband were looking for their kitten, Turbo (my brother in law likes cars; they had another cat called Porsche). Where was Turbo? My sister opened the refrigerator and there he was, contentedly eating food in one of the containers. They had no idea how he got in there . To add - he was INSIDE the food container!

I would go to my bedroom and find shoes on top of my bed. I would never do that - how did they get there? Then one day I burst out laughing as I saw my dear Fou Minou struggling mightily carrying my big shoe in her mouth across the room.

NOLA BB Fan - The shoe story is adorable, the fridge story is just hilarious!  My cats were never that crafty.

RRA1 - Sorry- boat ride. Your Fluffster sounds like he loved life - an example for us all!  Here are two cat stories. Two of my males loved my printer. They would sit, one on either side, waiting for the paper to come out and put a paw on it to guide it . After a bit, I would just say, "Wanna print?" and they'd assume the position with great anticipation. My kitty, Bronwen, is the only one not spayed. Last summer, a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses came to my door. I am a sucker who just can't be mean, so I let them come in. Bronnie was in heat. Screaming her head off, she rubbed her bottom on the leg of one of them and would not stop. I attempted only half-heartedly to put an end to it, as I had hoped that this would hasten their leave. My planned worked after 10 minutes (I''m usually held hostage for a good half-hour or so). Good girl.

Happy to see this thread lives. 3D

Fave tales - printer & shoe. Buckethead, what do you give cats to eat? Special cat food, sth. at the table? I buy "Royal Canin", cat edition. It used to be food to dogs but they expanded & began manufacture the cat ration.

RRA1 - I've always fed the girls a cheapo-brand of dry food called Dad's and they do fine. I've always had to feed my boys Hill's Science Diet Urinary Formula because they repeatedly got urinary blockages, even with canned food. It costs a whole lot for a little bag, but it works and avoids trips to the vet (which isn't cheap, either).

2Buckethead: Will you bring favorite cat phrases? To me, it's "cat's meow". It's used to tell when you like song, song bit etc. If you forget any good niceties to tell neighbor lady that she looks super in new dress, just say "Wow, it's cat's meow!". It'll work. Don't thank me. :D

I often think to myself when I look in the mirror in the  morning, "Look what the cat dragged in!" I think that the "cat's meow" phrase is a very Roaring Twenties Jazz Age saying. I've used it with older people, who seem to really like it. If I'd say it to younger ones, such as my students, they'd
say that I was "outta pocket!"  I have a poster of Pavlov trying to control a bunch of cats (recognizing that his theories are probably more applicable to dogs and humans - there was a reason why he did not do his experiments with cats!).

“Name the different kinds of people,’ said Miss Lupescu. ‘Now.’Bod thought for a moment. ‘The living,’ he said. ‘Er. The dead.’ He stopped. Then, ‘... Cats?’ he offered, uncertainly.”

Winston Churchill loved his kitties and always had at least one, enjoying their company especially when dining alone. One visitor described a lunch during which Yellow Cat sat in a chair, next to the PM, as he was fed mutton. Like me, he engaged in meaningful conversations with them and expressed remorse when he had to chastise them for any reason. He once swatted one with a newspaper, after which the cat ran off.  After a few days, he had his daughter ask his secretary to put a card in the window stating "...if Cat cares to come home, all is forgiven." The kitty did return and was treated to generous servings of salmon and cream. When Churchill was nearing the end, his beloved Jock was with him. He made provisions for the cat to be cared for at his Chartwell estate. I am told that a sixth generation Jock greet visitors there today.

Sweet tale! :D Nice to see Winston Churchill likes cats alongside pigs, he said this phrase "I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals". Isn't it clever phrase?

Poe said, "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." He loved cats. When his wife was dying of TB, he kept his Cattarina in bed with her because he could not afford to keep her room warm.

I thought it touching to read the account of Julia Child's passing. The article stated that her cat, "Minou," was sleeping with her at the end.

Some quotes I like:
Mark Twain: "If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat. "

Ernest Hemingway, who had some 6 toed cats (lots of descendants at the house in Key West): "No animal has more liberty than the cat, but it buries the mess it makes."

NOLA BB Fan:  I wish that my cats did something with the mess they make! I am surprised to hear that Julia Child slept with her kitty; she strikes me as too proper for that. More and more hospices, and even hospitals, are looking the other way or even permitting pets to visit with their owners. Some of my cats (and all of my dogs in the past) seem to know when they are needed to comfort me when I am sick or depressed.

I have a cat who wants to stay outdoors. I made a truce with her to let her go outside but she has to come in at night (there are coyotes roaming in my city and a number of cats and small dogs have gone missing over the years).
She gets her revenge by doing her business outside the litter box. But she scoops a bit of litter from the box to cover her poop. I can't help but chuckle when she does that.

About comforting me, my dear Mr Fuzzy could sense when I was down or under the weather and would get super lovey dovey with me. None of the other cats do that. Thankfully BooBoo the dog also seems to sense that a little TLC is needed.

You 2 mentioned dogs - when dogs show tongue, it looks like smile. It's positive, cute, funny.

Julia Child was a famous US chef who popularized French cooking in our country. She had a cooking show on TV for many years. There was a movie about her some time back starring Meryl Streep.

TLC - "tender loving care"

Yes when our dog comes to me and opens his mouth, tongue hanging out, little tail wagging - he sure looks happy.

NOLA BB Fan - Yes, it's not the norm for kitties, as least in my experience, to be nurturing types in the same was most dogs are. But isn't it sweet when they are? You mentioned coyotes in your area. We have them as well in PA, but I've also heard of owls carrying away cats and very small dogs out of backyards. Regarding Julia Child, I have fond childhood memories of watching her on TV. My brothers and I would make endless fun of her cheerful earnestness as she tried to make things like tongue seem palatable.

RR A1 - TB is tuberculosis. Sorry - the old nurse in me says things such as CA as cancer, URI as upper respiratory infection, etc.  I'll try to avoid
abbreviations and slang that are less than global.
