Every round is going to be tough with this record.

I'm going to go with Tears in the Morning.  I actually like the song quite a bit, but it is a little too wimpy for a BB album.

Tears in the Morning.  I don't hate it, but whereas Deirdre is endearingly twee, this one is a little bloated in syrup.

Got To Know the Woman. The only average track on an otherwise superb album.

This is going to be tough, this is my all-time favorite album and I love every song on it.

But, anyway: Cool, Cool Water.

Tears in the Morning

I've always thought the continued whole-step jumps in the song to be really cool. Its unusual, in a good way.

I tend to think of sunflower as their most sunshine pop, kitschy album. It's very 70s and a bit sappy here and there but it has a unity to it. It's the whimsical, naively romantic flip side to the dark, morbid Surf's Up. Within this sunshine context Bruce's songs work really well for me and I enjoy them a lot. Macho rocker Got to Know the Woman sticks out like a sore thumb though so it definitely gets my first vote.

Cool, Cool Water

No contest.  Like "Give Peace A Chance" it's a chorus, not a song.  And while the Boys do a much better job here than John did there, it still doesn't work and is in this case, WAY too long.  This is a perfect example of what happens when artists try to please others, rather than themselves.  Roll Eyes

I think the album's kitschyness is probably enhanced by the shrillness of the mix. There isn't much in the way of guts in the soundscape, just a whole lotta top end. Steve Hoffman gave a pretty on point rundown last year:

Quote
This is one of those masters that the better the playback system, the worse it sounds, sad to say.

No midrange to speak of, bass severely limited with something that sounds like a CBS Laboratories Volumax 411 on stun or something and the top was boosted at least 10 db at 12k. Probably going for a certain sound on midrangy, dull speakers of the day (or maybe it was mixed on honky horn monitors with no tweeters, dunno.) Mixed on what sounds like one of those dry early solid state soulless consoles with the "look Ma, variable EQ on every channel" deals.

Remaster this baby: Find some midband, kill some top, save the planet, keep insects alive!
