PASTE Magazine has published their list of the top ten band feuds in history:  The Beach Boys check in at #3 with the following blurb:

3. The Beach Boys: Mike Love vs. Brian Wilson
Often called “America’s Band,” the California dudes have had a long history of legal issues surrounding songwriting credits, royalties and usage of the band’s name. These came to a public head in 2012, when Love unexpectedly fired Wilson and fellow original members Al Jardine and David Marks after a surprising reunion. The group had been touring for the band’s 50th anniversary, but Love decided that it was best not to get “overexposed.” “I’m disappointed and can’t understand why [Love] doesn’t want to tour with Al, David and me,” Wilson told CNN when asked about the firing. “We are out here having so much fun. After all, we are the real Beach Boys.” Love continues to tour under the Beach Boys name with a substitute band.

The rest of the list?

10. The Rolling Stones (Mick vs. Keef)
09. Simon vs. Garfunkel
08. Phil Everly vs. Don Everly
07. Pink Floyd (David Gilmour vs. Roger Waters)
06. The Beatles (Dr. Winston O' Boogie vs. Macca)
05. Guns N' Roses (Axl vs. Everyone)
04. The Kinks (Ray Davies vs. Dave Davies)

02. Oasis (Noel Gallagher vs. Liam Gallagher)
01. Mayhem (Varg Vikernes vs. Euronymous)*

*According to PASTE this one tragically involved a murder so that is likely why it takes the pole position over the rest of the more famous field.

Sounds about right.

Only the Gallagher brothers and a band that killed each other are more immature and childish than The Beach Boys.

Sorry, I don't trust any list where Oasis beat the Beach Boys, unless its the "biggest, most overrated up their own arses pile of horseshit in a dripping puddle of pus flecked monkey semen" list, in which case I don't mind.

Well it's always nice to see our Boys high in any chart but any hack peddling that "Mike sacked Brian" sh*t ought to be dragged out into the street and sho…

Oops, getting all Jeremy Clarkson there for a mo'…

Love the "now tours with a substitute band" line, as if Mike's touring is a new thing… what utter tripe

I didn't think the Brian-Mike feud was even the most infamous band feud within the Beach Boys

Including such grim tragedy as "Varg Vikernes vs. Euronymous" in a list like this doesn't really speak for the magazine's editors.

Maybe a little harsh.

Agreed. This article is a steaming pile of sh*t not meriting any form of attention. It challenges my mind that some people make a living of writing this type material.

I can't think of many Brian vs Mike feuds. Maybe two. There was Mike's stance against Landy, which had more to do with Landy's treatment of Brian than any issues with Brian. And there was Mike's ill-advised lawsuit during the BWPS period. That's two in 52 years.

Mike's lawsuit to get credit for the songs he co-wrote had more to do with Murry's business practices than Brian's behavior, although, ultimately, it does tell you something about Brian's character by his non-action regarding the songwriting credit issue.

Not to start anything - really, I'm not - but I personally do not consider the "ending" of the C50 reunion as a feud because I believe Brian was more in line with Mike than we are allowed to know.

Now, if you want some real feuds within the Beach Boys, feuds that ACTUALLY HAD SOME SUBSTANCE, look at Dennis' several "issues" with the group and  Al vs Mike.

Regardless, any Beach Boys' feuds coming in at No. 3 is way too high.

The "fired" thing is indeed tiresome. Do ten seconds of research people.

The "substitute band" thing is more dicey. They clearly mean it in a pejorative way here. But just because it has been that way for awhile, it doesn't negate what Mike's band is. I'm equally tired of the "the configuration we've been touring in for fifteen years" crap too, as if that means anything. We obviously shouldn't be surprised after 15 years Mike uses this lineup, but time doesn't justify it, if justification is needed (which Mike's comments seem to imply to me, otherwise why invoke it as he has?).

Forget last year's "feud" that never was.  The real feud was the July 3, 1977 conflict in Newark on the airport tarmac. That was probably #1, even over the 1979 Universal Ampitheatre Mike/Dennis verbal confrontation/foot race around the stage.

"Love now tours with a substitute band."

I like it!  Ha Ha Ha!  Grin

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

The biggest feud in the BB was the Wilsons vs. Mike/Al, which caused the temporary breakup of the band and was covered in Rolling Stone - it was in the late 70s I believe.

The Al vs. Mike feud also caused the dissolution of the post Carl Beach Boys into the Mike Beach Boys and Al's Beach Boys Family and Friends.  Never really got the story of how or why that happened.

Both much bigger than the Brian/Mike tour deal.  The Brian/Mike feuds have been over songwriting credits, Brian releasing a free CD of songs with a newspaper in the UK, and over the release of BWPS.  All resulted in lawsuits, with only the first finding in Mike's favor.

That's the one I alluded to above. I don't think any Beach Boys feud was worse than that. At least according to the participants and witnesses who were there.
