Where are Glow Crescent Glow, the Love You demos,

The latter presumably don't exist in releasable quality.

Quote
the early mix of My Diane,

Not that different from the final mix, really -- and i can imagine Brian not exactly being happy with more attention coming to this song.

Quote
It's Trying to Say, Life is for the Living,

Yep, those two definitely should have been on there, as should Lines and Everybody Wants To Live. Maybe the speculation is right and there *will* be a proper Adult Child release? Or maybe the band just don't like the album.

Quote
the movie version of Lady Lynda,

I get the impression Al doesn't like this song any more, given his split with Lynda...

Quote
something other than Brian's Back from First Love,

Solo -- Carl being on Brian's Back makes it multiple Beach Boys. Plus mostly rubbish.

Quote
the unreleased originals from KTSA,

The stuff I've heard is terrible. Maybe there's good stuff I've not heard though, but given the time-frame I doubt it.

Quote
Al's version of California Saga,

Solo.

Quote
unreleased songs from the MiC sessions.

Possibly when the plans were being made they were excluded because of the possibility of a future album, or being used on Brian's solo album? Or maybe they're not very good...

I don't mind DGNTW's lyrics at all. Always loved that song and can't wait to hear the backing track.

And ironically your comments about Somewhere Near Japan kind of contradict what you're saying now. You admit it has a 'standing' with other fans and yet say it shouldn't be included because you don't like it.  Wink

No, it reinforces his point -- he's saying that everyone will disagree, and pointing out that we all have different preferences and nobody was going to be completely happy, by pointing out an occasion where he disagrees with the majority but agrees with the compilers, as well as one (the live stuff) where he disagrees with the majority *and* the compilers. (Presumably the other two options -- agrees with the majority but disagrees with the compilers, and everybody agrees, also exist for other tracks).

I'm sure everyone could point to tracks that fall into all four of those groups for themselves -- I know I can.

I'll reply in more detail in a moment, Nicko, but that's not quite it: I'm saying I, personally, happen to be glad that SNJ isn't on this, as in my opinion, it's pretty lame (although it towers in quality above much else the Boys released in the 80s, which I feel shows how low their stars had sunk during those years). I'm not saying my opinion should have been used as a basis to exclude the track; that's the mistake everyone else is, in my opinion, making. I'm just saying that my opinions seem to coincide with those of the decision-makers on this set for this track. But that's just luck. And it may not even be true: who knows, perhaps SNJ was all set to make it onto the final listing, everyone in the band and their 'people' wanted it there, but Carl's estate vetoed it for some reason...

EDIT:

Thank you Andrew, you summed it up much better above than I have. And you've done the track by track analysis I was going to regarding the Love You Demos, Glow Crescent Glow and the other tracks Nicko mentioned that I was going to as well. Regarding Glow Crescent Glow specifically - do we even know that this was ever recorded? As far as I recall, Timothy White (I think) mentioned it once, and that's about it, but perhaps better informed minds here can tell us otherwise.

Irrespective of the status, recorded, demoed or otherwise, of that particular track, this returns to a point I made yesterday. It's easy to peruse on-line lists of songs we know were in some way being worked on during the history of the Beach Boys, and say - hey, that should have been on here. But all too often, all we have is a track name. We often don't know if it was ever worked on, if it was ever finished to any kind of releasable standard, or, if it was at least semi-completed, if the reults were deemed satisfactory and releasable by the track's creators. And even if all of those conditions were met at the time, in some cases the tapes have gone AWOL since!

So pointing to tracks from lists of stuff on line we know the Boys worked on and saying 'It's so lame that they haven't put these out yet' is crazy. There can be any number of reasons why those tracks aren't releasable, not just because some big bad record company says no, but, in some cases, because it's actually *impossible*, now and at any time in the future.

Carl is on more than just this song. And who is using their own opinion now to say what should have been omitted from the set? (I'm joking obviously).

I'd actually guess that if anyone vetoed it, it would be Al. I remember reading somewhere that he refused to perform it on stage after a couple of shows, once he realised there were drug references in the lyrics.

Price point in Holland: € 93.99.

Which means that my retailer will sell it for around € 90.00, in all probability (the above is at bol.com, who's always a little bit more expensive).

A very generous offer IMHO, the TSS box costs € 144.99.

I saw it as well, but they have 30 September as the release date. I hope that's a mistake.

For example, WOW HD has the right date, but sells it for about 120 euros. Quite a difference!

Is he? I've genuinely forgotten -- it's not in regular rotation in my house.
And I suspect my opinion on that one coincides with those putting together the box set on this one. There *could* have been another reason of course...

I really don't agree that people are using their own opinions that much though. The general theme seems to be that if they could have included more unreleased songs or even mixes/versions that are not available on CD then it would have made this set more appealing than having already widely available album tracks or radio promos or whatever.

And for the fourth time, it will be cheaper at importCDs.com

http://www.importcds.com/music/2617315/the-beach-boys-made-in-california

$104.99

But still hugely more expensive than other box sets. The new Burt Bacharach set (I mention it again because it was the first thing that came up when I searched box sets on Amazon) which also has 6 CDs and a book is $48.73!

Interestingly for those who are arguing that no casual fans will buy this, here are a couple of the comments on Amazon:

Quote

Larry Davis says:
All I say is, pretty great...now I don't need that "50 Big Hits" thing...all the tracks are here...and much more...60+ unreleased tracks!! This and the catalogue, no need for various other compilations/"hits" collections...this covers it nicely...

Quote
Posted on Jun 12, 2013 12:54:03 PM PDT
Johnny Karnofsky says:
What I will say, is I generally do NOT do compilations or box sets; but in this case, I have so little from 'the boys' in my playlst, I just might do this one as a 2nd generation fan.....

So it looks like Universal have a better idea of what will sell to the casual fan than the people here...

I don't think anyone said nobody will buy it. Just that any regular fan who shells out for this will have to have more money than sense.  Wink

Well, "I have so little from 'the boys' in my playlst," and "now I don't need that "50 Big Hits" thing" don't suggest obsession, do they?

A *LOT* of people have said that the only people who will buy it are the obsessive fans, that the market for this kind of thing no longer exists, and so on.

As for 'more money than sense' -- I genuinely don't think so. There are a bunch of musicians for whom I'm a big enough fan to want more than a greatest hits collection, but not everything they've ever recorded, so I've ended up picking up quite a few box sets of this type over the years. I'm sure there are plenty of people for whom the Beach Boys fall into that category.

And yes, it would be a bit daft for those people to pay $130 for the box set, but it's selling elsewhere at closer to $100, and the price will only drop. They're not all going to be buying from the hihest-priced shop on release day, after all...

I hate live tracks. They never sound as good as the studio ones and you don't get the buzz that comes from actually having been at that particular concert, even if you were, back in the day! I'd have left *all* of them off.

Can't quite agree… the live version of We Got Love is far superior in arrangement and delivery to the studio version.  Moot, as the song's not on the set anyway but it illustrates the point.

This is how I would do the first two discs of the boxset f.e. if I were able to change a couple of things around, while respecting the incredible amount of work done by the team that assembled it and respecting the concept of the boxset:

One track that I would like to have seen included that nobody has mentioned:

Lahaina Aloha

In addition to SNJ, might have been a cool way to represent the 80s/SIP era a little more, as it seems to be relatively well regarded.

And the only version I have access to is a really shitty youtube upload.

So many posters here can't seem to see past their own personal wants for this set, and have been outraged when these haven't been met.

I respectfully disagree.

For example, the criticism of things like Our car Club, Salt Lake City, Don't Go Near the Water, Brian's Back etc. doesn't seem to be 'I hate these songs so they shouldn't be included'. It seems to be more, 'these have never really been celebrated by either reviewers or fans and they aren't rare so what is the purpose of their inclusion'.

And ironically your comments about Somewhere Near Japan kind of contradict what you're saying now. You admit it has a 'standing' with other fans and yet say it shouldn't be included because you don't like it.  Wink

This is a good point.  For me, there's nothing here "I don't like."  I'm not complaining about this track or that track.  I'm a crazed fan... I love and want it all.  But I don't want to buy In My Room and Little Honda again.

But if I do, shouldn't I at least get a fcking discount?...

I own the original twofers
The 2000 remastered twofers
The 2012 single disc remasters stereo/mono
Box this and box that
Comp this and comp that, with remix this and first-time stereo that

I've stopped.  No 50 Big Ones.  Couldn't pull the trigger on it.  And why would I.  It wasn't for me.  So, this box is bitter/sweet.  It comes at a time of great saturation for me.

Unless the price gets cut in half... It's not for me.  Not right now.  Maybe I'll get swept up in August.  Let's start the bidding at $55.00

Shouldn't "Sound of Free" be highlighted as well? It may not be the first time it's been released, but has it been released on CD or even released since it's first printing?

As a new poster, and someone who's only gotten into the Beach Boys in the last couple years, I can say I'm excited about this box set for sure. The unreleased Dennis tunes should be wonderful, some of the live stuff will be great as well, particularly excited about the live "Wild Honey". Having said that, I can see why some people would feel slighted by the track list. As a longtime Springsteen fanatic, I think he's done a really fantastic job releasing archival material while not deluding his catalog. Just look at Tracks, or The Promise. I can say I was hoping the Beach Boys would go that route with this box. I mean, we already had the Good Vibrations box, with all the hits, then we had the 50 Big Ones with all the hits, and I'm not even going to bring up the countless number of greatest hits they've put out over their career. So the fact that they're including stuff like Good Vibrations and Kokomo just kinda seems meaningless at this point. I'd like to think that everyone who wants to hear those songs, already has them, and really wouldn't help sales of this set too much. However, this is all my opinion, and ultimately, the Beach Boys can do what they like, as it's their art. But like I said, I'm psyched to hear some of this stuff, and depending on the price of the set, I'll probably pick it up. I do feel bad for some folks who bought 50 Big Ones to hear the stereo mixes of Wild Honey and Darlin' though, as it seems they'll be on this as well.

Is "It's A Beautiful Day" considered a decent 80's song or one of the many terrible ones. I can't decide if I'm happy or disappointed it's made the box set.

It's a weird choice, that's for sure.

According to someone who would know.

Seriously, there was a Beach Boys Love You condom?!  Amazing.
