I saw a couple of live ones mentioned. How about Absolutely Live by The Doors or On Your Feet Or On Your Knees by Blue Oyster Cult?

Absolutely Live is a goodun, but BOC's first live offering is a monster. Gotta go with the studio classics already mentioned -- Exile on Main Street, Quadophenia, and Layla. All dense, hot, emotional, all over the place and no bum cuts. And (arguably) each group's finest hour. Honorable mention -- Eat a Peach. And how about Carl and the Passions/Pet Sounds? Metal Machine Music?

For a second I wasn't able to think of a single double album I thought was truly great. Thanks for reminding me that there is in fact, at least one out there.

great topic....
I would go with 'Frampton comes alive'..... off the top of my head
in terms of BB's?..... I love the Pet Sounds stereo/mono coloured vinyl double lp...... I think the yellow is mono, and the green is stereo....

Also, Pink Floyd: Umagumma Oh yeah! Ummagumma!! Nice pull!! Ummagumma was the coolest, craziest thing when I was a kid -- listened to it all the time. Always thought it used the double LP format better than any other double album. Most double albums are just longer albums... a reason to indulge, etc -- other than being longer they really don't seem to have a reason for being doubled. They just had more stuff, it seems. But Ummagumma makes it count. The crazy scary live cuts. And the even crazier wackier studio cuts, divided by four -- so each member could have a go. It was very thought out. Like an Oreo cookie. You pick how you want to eat it. The Wall and Blonde on Blonde are quite good. There's not anything I would remove on those albums. Bitches Brew is good. Strange though... I've always loved double albums... but now that I think about it, and read everyone's lists, I don't think most of them are that good. Certainly not among my desert island material. Perhaps it's too much time given to a subject.

Ummagumma. When I was a kid in the last few years of high school Ummagumma was the record of choice for getting stoned to. One day a bunch of us were at one of my friend's house and he totally freaked out during the manic Rick Wright part. He fell on the floor screaming "NOOOOOOOO TURN IT OFF!" over and over again. His stepdad was our ex Marine PE Teacher and would have kicked the crap out of us if he'd caught us smoking weed in his house. 18 odd years later and I still can't listen to that song without thinking of that day. Memories.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

how about that little fly at the end of ( i think ) Grandchester Meadows. Buzzin' around the speakers. Drove my dog nuts!
It was High School for me too... I loved the earthy, outdoorsy feel of Ummagumma...

Live albums seem cheating somehow, but these two are feckin great. The Band in particular is one of my favourite discoveries of the year.

Ballad Of Calico-First Edition- A country rock opera years before Willie Nelson did one. All the songs on this are based on true stories of a 1800's silver mining town. Amazing and diverse with all members singing leads.
