They brought back California Saga briefly in 1990, with Al on lead, and it sounded really good.  Audience tapes that I've heard indicate a good reception for the song too.

Didn't matter. It was always a highlight and a sell out when I attended concerts in that era. It was always great!

I find the reunion tour, though objectively "better" in a lot of ways, was far more of a nostalgia trip than the 80s/90s period.

We saw the Beach Boys at Pilot Field (Buffalo, NY) in 1990 and Mike Love was not with them at the time. Gerry Beckley from America was touring with the group. Al sang California Saga (he introduced it as a "pro-environmental song" saying that the BB were promoting the issue since '73). It was well received and a nice departure from the often standard set they played during "baseball game/concert" during that time. IIRC, Beckley sang Sister Golden Hair.

Even though they had a new album in the top 3 as they toured and artistically far better than each of those you mentioned?

The album was on the charts so briefly, and had absolutely no presence on radio. Still Cruisin' got a lot of airplay on AC formats, I even recall hearing Hot Fun in the Summertime on the radio once or twice. California Dreamin' was a top 10 AC single, Rock 'N' Roll to the Rescue got a fair amount of play....and of course there was Wipe Out and Kokomo.....

Both California Callin' and Getcha Back also fall within the timeframe mentioned and were included in sets during that time.

Roughly during this time period (maybe slightly past 1998), they played Runaway (Del Shannon) at one of the concerts - that was a surprise. Don't recall who had the lead on it and whether it was one of the BB or a back up musician.

Al sang that when they did it in 83. There was a version of it released on a Sunkist promo lp. I think there's a youtube clip of them singing it in Seattle - Brian dances!
