List your favorite "tasteful" additions such as the cheerleaders that were added to the concerts.

Carl looked lost in those crass shows.

1. The addition of some rarities into the setlists.

2. The second Beachago tour.

3. The "Unplugged" concerts.

4. Matt Jardine doing the falsetto parts magnificently!

5. Billy Hinsche wearing shades and doin' da Wipe Out!

For three years straight we toured the nation
When we get through we needed a vacation
We wanted to party and get a little rest
So we packed our things and headed out west
We got our surfboards took the beachball out
Jumped in a limosuine ready to wipeout

Now were ready to go
Here we go here we go
One one two one two one two hit it d
Here we go

We got to California I said headed for the beach
There were girls galore all within our reach
There was sand and sun and lots of fun
But when we get there the fun really begun
So we cut on the box and started to shout
It was the beach boys rockin huh huh the wipeout

Oo oo Ooo ooo Oo Oo Oo oo

Wa-ah-ah-ah wawawa-ooh-oo
Wa-ah-ah-ah wawawa-ooh-oo
That's it, that that that's it dit dit dit dit dit
Hit it d

The sun went down and the night began
We was rapping for the people cold chillin boppin
We was partying hard making lots of noise
When around the corner came the real beach boys
So we all jumped up and started to shout
Lets all sing the song called the wipeout

Wipin out wipe out
Wipin out wipe out
Wah wah wah
Wipin out wipe out
Wipin out wipe out
Wah wah wah
Wipin out wipe out
Wipin out wipe out
Wah wah wah
Wipin out wipe out
Wipin out wipe out
Hey watch out
Wah wah wah
Wipin out wipe out

Stay go stay go stay go
Bring it out now

Wipin out wipe out
Wipin out wipe out
Wah wah wah
Wipin out wipe out
Wipin out wipe out
Wah wah wah
Wipin out wipe out
Wipin out wipe out
Wah wah wah
Wipin out wipe out
Wipin out wipe out
Hey watch out
Wah wah wah
Wipin out wipe out

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I noticed that when the BB's started doing Wipe Out as an encore in 1987-88, Carl was not onstage.

...just as he didn't appear in the video clip.

Carl singing Forever in 1988. Sadly, that and the 1993 box set tour were probably the group's only real "highlight" during the post Dennis era when Carl was still there.

They brought back California Saga briefly in 1990, with Al on lead, and it sounded really good.  Audience tapes that I've heard indicate a good reception for the song too.

Didn't matter. It was always a highlight and a sell out when I attended concerts in that era. It was always great!

I think what I like about this period of the band was that they were in some sense still a contemporary act, regularly recording and releasing things, even if those albums were Still Cruisin, Summer in Paradise, and Stars and Stripes. I find the reunion tour, though objectively "better" in a lot of ways, was far more of a nostalgia trip than the 80s/90s period.

Even though they had a new album in the top 3 as they toured and artistically far better than each of those you mentioned?

We saw the Beach Boys at Pilot Field (Buffalo, NY) in 1990 and Mike Love was not with them at the time. Gerry Beckley from America was touring with the group. Al sang California Saga (he introduced it as a "pro-environmental song" saying that the BB were promoting the issue since '73). It was well received and a nice departure from the often standard set they played during "baseball game/concert" during that time. IIRC, Beckley sang Sister Golden Hair.

The album was on the charts so briefly, and had absolutely no presence on radio. Still Cruisin' got a lot of airplay on AC formats, I even recall hearing Hot Fun in the Summertime on the radio once or twice. California Dreamin' was a top 10 AC single, Rock 'N' Roll to the Rescue got a fair amount of play....and of course there was Wipe Out and Kokomo.....

Both California Callin' and Getcha Back also fall within the timeframe mentioned and were included in sets during that time.

I saw them every year from 1983-88, and was always interested to see what new stuff was in the show.

Roughly during this time period (maybe slightly past 1998), they played Runaway (Del Shannon) at one of the concerts - that was a surprise. Don't recall who had the lead on it and whether it was one of the BB or a back up musician.

Al sang that when they did it in 83. There was a version of it released on a Sunkist promo lp. I think there's a youtube clip of them singing it in Seattle - Brian dances!

One of my very favourite BBs videos.  Cheesy (And one of my favourite songs e-v-e-r by anyone, anyway.  Cheesy)

CLICK to see Brian dance like Donkey Kong

I guess he was heavily on stuff there, but it's cool nevertheless. His passion for the tune is authentic, after all. Look at his face.  Azn

I guess when Brian, as per She's Got Rhythm, went out "disco dancing", those are the moves he busted on the dance floor. Wearing his 1976 white comeback suit.
