Amazing song titles, really.
You can tell who wrote what by the track titles alone. "Your Account" and "Legal Terms" are clearly Mike songs, whereas "Basket" and "Find A Wish List or Registry" could be tunes from Brian's late 80's solo career. And "Sign Out" could definitely be a Dennis tune. A hurting ballad with lyrics close to the bone and a couple of discreet strings.

The Hallmark disc has just landed in the post. Packaging is pitiful – not even a production credit, no sleeve notes (though song/tune writing credits are included at least. No original cover artwork…)…

Will try to A/B with other releases this afternoon but might not be too illuminating as I ain't a technicality guy.

Worst of the bunch so far.

Just sounds muffled and muddy.

Pref is (oooh, another list thread!):

1. 2001 Capitol two-fer, hands down.
2. 2013 duophonic disc from 2013 Not Now 2CD release, strangely enough.
3. 2013 mono disc from 2013 Not Now 2CD release
4. 2013 Hallmark issue.

Any chance that the forthcoming Surfin' 1962 is Brad's long-anticipated First Wave set?  Any chance I'll win the Lotto tonight and be beseiged by 21-year-old blondes?

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

LOL

I keep hoping something good might come out of it.

I'll never forget buying a budget issue of the Christmas Album in 1996 and finding the "Barnyard Billy/Swingers Cantina/Iron Vega-Tables" H&V section as a hidden bonus track.

I think "Legal Terms" is that one song Brian & Mike wrote together in 1994.

It seems that Carl would leave the stage whenever the band played "Sign Out".

If it is, John, Brad ows me it for free! I pre-ordered and paid for it about 10 years ago (or whenever he was up and about with the release). ;p

'Fraid it's not – turns out it's Surfin' Safari the album, a slew of bonus tracks, and a 2nd CD comprising sessions originally released on the SoT Alternate Surfin' Safari bootleg (minus one track, it appears).

I ordered a couple of copies of First Wave from Brad too… now that the material is out of copyright, I wonder if there's a chance of a European release?

hat said, I'd rather it came from Capitol given the shoddy quality of all these semi-legit post-copyright money-grubbing releases that have hit the market so far.

Yeah, I know (the tracklist was int the link I posted in the other thread). I ordered myself a copy, before it gets withdrawn.
If we're lucky! Brad ows a lot of money though, that's for sure.

I got stiffed by Brad on both that CD set and an expensive leather bound - set of photos.

The man has not an honest bone in his body.

I doubt he ever even had a copy of those tapes from which to make that First Wave set. In my estimation, he just worked up a plausible "sessions" track listing and proceeded to take orders. I still have a copy of the track listing somewhere amongst my stuff.

In the interests of fairness, yes, he did have the original master tapes leased from Bruce Morgan, Hite's son. The band didn't make a fuss about the gazillion bad reissues of the Morgan material since 1969, yet when Brad announced this set, they pitched a fit and decided they had ownership. Now that's plain wrong and the strong assumption is that BRI/Capitol were looking for an excuse to put him out of business. There's also strong evidence to indicate that he knew the BB were going to issue an injucntion to halt the set, yet still took orders.

That said, there's no question the man was a crook who took people's money for projects that never came to pass (dating back to a 2LP productions set in 1982), or that he has yet to refund the bulk of that money. Some fans helped finance First Wave and are still owed thousands of dollars. I was lucky - my association with him on a similarly non-existent project only cost me three months of my spare time (and was directly responsible for 10452), oh and the necessity of explaining to various friends that something he said about me to them was both untrue and actionable (I've lately discovered that this was because he was jealous of my access). He also caused a good friend a deal of grief with BRI by disclosing confidential material. His 1961-81 discography is still seminal, but his later actions have destroyed his reputation.

So who has the tapes – and the right to them – now? Have to assume that with the European 50-year copyright rule, they're now ripe for a legal release over here, by anyone.

Did BRI/Capitol take possession?  Should we assume that the material from those sessions & tapes is available to the box set compilers?

2CD version Not Now Music just arrived; am ripping the discs to my hard-drive in the office right now.

First off, according to the sleeve notes (by, ahem, "Brian Parks"… it's possible) Disc 2 is the original duophonic mix, NOT a stereo mix as is claimed on the slipcase. Haven't pressed "play" yet but I'm gonna hazard a guess that these might be needle-drops.

Cover photo (as you'll see on the Amazon listing) uses one of the outtakes from the original shoot, and the words "Beach Boys Surfin' Safari" are in Cooper Black, a-la Pet Sounds!

"Produced for reissue by Glenn Gretlund"

Disc one (mono) sounds pretty ropey – you can hear what I assume is surface noise at times. Not a patch on the ol' two-fer.

Disc two sounds clearer, actually.

Weird thing – on Disc 2, the Shift is timed as ten seconds longer than disc one (whole album timed as 45-ish seconds longer than disc one)… it's actually ten seconds of silence… interrupted veeeery briefly by very short drum roll/cymbal clash.

I missed this thread in January...

John, I have an old duophonic pressing with a weird artifact on it. After the fade of Moon Dawg there is something in one of the channels that sounds like a boys' church choir, very faintly. Is that on this pressing, too?
