This promises to be interesting, possibly from the wrong perspective!

Hope Mark might be able to enlighten us as to just how legit the "Not Now" label is!

Don't know how there could really be a stereo remix of the whole album...and the idea of an extraction mix of Surfin' scares the hell out of me.

5.1 remix!

Channel 1: Surfin' as we know it!
Channel 2: Carl eating.
Channel 3: Al picking his teeth.
Channel 4: Dennis smoking.
Channel 5: Mike with a vibrator, dildo and bag of money.
Subwoofer: Brian, Van Dyke, Vosse and Anderle chanting "surf, wipeout, gremmie, toes on the nose, pipeline, dinwiddie pearl, surf, wipeout", etc.

I can't understand for the life of me why this is across two CDs… even wih the bonus Luau track on disc 2, you should get three or four Surfin Safari LPs on to one CD!

Not Now! is a superbudget label that is, as far as I can see, legitimate. I think it aims at the customer who happens to visit a record store, and sees a superbargain compilation, and snaps it (or a couple of them, they're that cheap) up along with what she/he wanted to buy in the first place.

In that sense, the label has lovely stuff. I have two double sets of Cuban music (and releated), and just noticed that the 'Cruisin'' series is available in 3CD boxes. Who can complain about a double set for € 4.99? Not me. They're not perfect, but more than good enough.

But I don't think Not Now! answers the needs of serious collectors. There's shoddy stuff too, see Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On', for instance.

I think they profit from material that's in the public domain by now.

Also listed at Amazon uk as being in the Fat Cat label - doesn't come up under a search for artists btw. Amazon uk also has it listed as a 180g vinyl release.

Gobsmacked.

Thought I recognised Not Now Music - I have their 2-cd Robert Johnson : The Complete Collection, a perfectly serviceable and budget priced collection of everything he ever recorded.

Am I right in saying that there was a change in copyright law in the UK as regards sound recordings to extend from 50 to 70 years?  I'm not sure how this "Surfin' Safari" is legal under the new law.  Did it originate elsewhere?  Or do I not understand the law?

OK, let's think about this logically - a small reissue label is going to have the resources to...

acquire the original multitracks, or lease them...
get someone (read: Mark) to remix them into stereo...

... and then market the product exclusively via a UK supermarket's website.

Anyone care to point me at the single atom of that scenario that makes any sense whatsoever ?  Old Man

Gotta assume that to create a "stereo" mix they've also incorporated SoT tracks. This could go on a while…!

2CD version Not Now Music just arrived; am ripping the discs to my hard-drive in the office right now.

First off, according to the sleeve notes (by, ahem, "Brian Parks"… it's possible) Disc 2 is the original duophonic mix, NOT a stereo mix as is claimed on the slipcase. Haven't pressed "play" yet but I'm gonna hazard a guess that these might be needle-drops.

Cover photo (as you'll see on the Amazon listing) uses one of the outtakes from the original shoot, and the words "Beach Boys Surfin' Safari" are in Cooper Black, a-la Pet Sounds!

"Produced for reissue by Glenn Gretlund"

Disc one (mono) sounds pretty ropey – you can hear what I assume is surface noise at times. Not a patch on the ol' two-fer.

Disc two sounds clearer, actually.

Weird thing – on Disc 2, the Shift is timed as ten seconds longer than disc one (whole album timed as 45-ish seconds longer than disc one)… it's actually ten seconds of silence… interrupted veeeery briefly by very short drum roll/cymbal clash.

The changes in EU copyright law were agreed last year, but given until the end of this year to become law in the individual countries. As I understand it, that means that the Surfin' Safari album has gone out of copyright in some EU countries, possibly including the UK, as of last week (everything from 1962 will have expired at on Jan 1 2013, simultaneously). That also presumably means that the single versions of Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You by the Beatles went out of copyright then. However, the changes will go into effect before any full Beatles albums go out of copyright (presumably the reason for the changes, in much the same way that Mickey Mouse was the reason for similar changes in US cinema copyright laws), and we can't expect any 60s music released after Dec 31, 2012 to ever go out of copyright as long as any of it's making a profit for a major corporation :-/

"we can't expect any 60s music released after Dec 31, 2012..."

Exactly how can any 60s music be released after 12/31/2012 ?  Or after 12/31/1969, for that matter ?  Old Man
