Inspired by the Punk Appreciation thread, the Bass Favorites thread, and Favorite Album Of All-Time thread, I dug out some Slade. While they were more glam than punk, they still had a lot of punk in them. Jim Lea was a great bass player and songwriter. And, Slayed is a hidden classic; you rarely see it mentioned in album polls.

Great album.  The people bashing this are absolutely hysterical.  It must be some music fan disease to hate the person who writes the songs in their beloved bands.  You see it with VU fans and Lou Reed's solo career, Brian Eno fanboys who only like the first 2 Roxy Music albums, and Pixies fans who can't deal with anything after Doolittle.  Frank Black is a monster talent.



The "theaterical" era stuff might be better than the 70s albums.

No way. The Residents peaked with Duck Stab, Eskimo and Commercial Album. Then each subesquent album was not quite as good as the one it followed.

All great albums, but I think Mark of the Mole, Tunes of Two Cities, and Wormwood are even better.  Demons Dance Alone is also wonderful.  And while they kept making albums, I think largely they became more of a theatrical/performance group once they began touring, rather than a group making albums as their main focus.  The 70s albums are wildly creative and excellent, but they are also largely crude attempts at imitating Frank Zappa and a few of their other heroes.  They really began finding their voice around Eskimo and the Mole stuff, which of course paved the way for Wormwood, Freak Show, Cube-E, etc.  That early phase with the original lineup has a charming cockiness, but they became confident later on.  That's the stuff with real depth.
