Mentioned this in another thread, but does anyone know if Wind Chimes was written about Brian's burgeoning mental illness?  I just get that vibe from the song, and the fact that it's followed by Fire on the smile setlist makes me think it's true.  If I'm wrong, does anyone know what the song is actually about?

"Wind Chimes" is about wind chimes.

and sorry - didn't mean to make you feel ganged up on.

No problem.  Like I said, I think it was just the quick combo that made it feel that way.  Smiley

I don't think Brian was especially aware that there was something really, really wrong with him at this point. He was crushed and disappointed in himself by not being able to complete Smile, sure, but I think the realization only came later on (and likely only happened over time).

This album has really grown on me. Very beautiful in a stoned out way. I can't say I dislike anything on here. I really love the stereo version.

1. Good Vibrations
2. Wind Chimes (the original is my favorite song on TSS, this is an awesome version too)
3. Vegatables (I may like this better then the original)
4. Heroes and Villains (As much as I think I'm tired of it, whenever it plays I'm blown away)
5. Little Pad (The silly laughter at the beginning ruins an other wise fantastically beautiful song)
6. Gettin' Hungry (Seems out of place, works better on my personal Wild Honey album)
8. With Me Tonight (short but extremely beautiful)
9. Whistle In (Has the catchiness of the the Child is the Father of the Man chants)
10. Fall Breaks (I appreciate the creativity)
11. Wonderful (Much weeker then the original)
12. She's Goin Bald (meh)

Don't like this album. A huge mess compared to SMiLE Sessions.

Unlistenable:
11. Wind Chimes - Especially when compared to the Smile version.
10. Wonderful - Same as Wind Chimes.
9. Fall Breaks and Back To Winter
8. Gettin' Hungry

S'okay:
7. Whistle In
6. With Me Tonight
5. She's Goin' Bald - I'd like this track a lot more if it weren't for that goshdarn chipmunk effect.

Pretty good:
4. Little Pad - Apart from the beginning, this is a pretty decent song.
3. Vegetables - I actually like this version of the song. Don't prefer it to the Smile version though.

Classic:
2. Good Vibrations (though it's very close!)
1. Heroes and Villains

Personally i don't really understand how any fan of Brian Wilson could not like this record, but hey ho, each to their own...

It's an almost perfect album, and funnily enough it would achieve perfection if what is almost unarguably the greatest track - Good Vibrations - was removed from the lineup. GV simply doesn't fit, and it really jars arriving as it does in the middle of an otherwise laidback, lo-fi record.

Oh, and She's Goin' Bald is AMAZING!! Great melody, hilarious lyrics, fantastic speeded-up vocals section, great group singing throughout - screw the doubters that's what i say!

Alright, alright, each to his own. I just don't like the album in comparison to The SMiLE Sessions. I just think the versions of Wonderful and Wind Chimes on that album are so much better than the ones they chose to put on here.

You know that thing they're really good at?  Personally, I REALLY like it when they do that.

Thing is, I feel they were/are "really good" at about a thousand different things, including beautiful fragments of music strung together cohesively in a non-standard format. I've never touched marijuana in my life and I totally get it. Just me, though, and sorry - didn't mean to make you feel ganged up on.

Wait, what? Runners has never smoked pot? Am I the only one having trouble coming to terms with this?

The Internet is a very confusing place.

One confusing album but I am starting to warm up to it. I'm starting to see the Smiley and not as much the Smile, if you dig where I'm coming from. I'm not all the way there and I still think there are some problems with this record, but hey, that's the Beach Boys for you....usually...

1. Good Vibrations - Well duh. Not meant for this album at all, but it's here, so...yeah, it's ineffably brilliant and the pinnacle of pop music. I could spend all day talking about this masterpiece, but let's move on.
2. Heroes and Villains - Also brilliant, but troubled, wacky and a little off this plane of existence - thus, it's a perfect encapsulation of Brian Wilson's head. Absolutely amazing.
3. With Me Tonight - Oooh, beautiful. The best of the original (meaning recorded specifically for this album) tunes. LOVE it.
4. Fall Breaks And Back To Winter - Seriously awesome. A nice, nice Cliff's Notes of the Fire music.
5. Gettin' Hungry - One of the most underrated Beach Boys songs. I really, really dig it.
6. Whistle In - Slight and wonderful. I sometimes wish the band would've recorded a full album of wee little snippet tracks like this, Meant for You and You're Welcome. Would've messed with a lot of people's minds.
7. Vegetables - I like this version. The bottle blowing (or whatever you call it) in the background is nifty.
8. Little Pad - Wacky and uh...yeah, I'm starting to like it.
9. Wind Chimes - Creepy but pretty, like a spider web against a stained glass window. The Smile version is a zillion times better, but still nice n' sleepy I s'pose.
10. She's Goin' Bald - Okay. Um...hand me that pot brownie, will ya? This song is...yeah. But not bad at all.
11. Wonderful - The original is my 2nd favorite Smile tune, but this just taints it. Not bad, but...I just don't know.

1. Good Vibrations - 234 (18)
2. Heroes and Villains - 213 (2)
3. Vegetables - 158
3. Little Pad - 158
5. Wind Chimes - 150 (1)
6. With Me Tonight - 143
7. Wonderful - 111 (1)
8. She's Goin' Bald - 99
9. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter - 91 (1)
10. Gettin' Hungry - 85
11. Whistle In - 76

My thoughts? The Smiley version of Wonderful may still be a little high, but most of these rankings make sense.  Good Vibrations cleaning up is no shocker.

From Worst to Best:
11: Fall Breaks And Back To Winter.
10: With Me Tonight.
09: Whistle-In.
08: Good Vibrations (Not that it's a bad song at all, it's a classic. But it fits onto this album worse than Sloop John B on Pet Sounds).
07: Little Pad.
06: She's Goin' Bald.
05: Wonderful.
04: Wind Chimes.
03: Heroes And Villains (The Smile Sessions version is far superior).
02: Gettin' Hungry.
01: Vegetables.

1. Good Vibrations
2. Heroes & Villains (top 2 are too obvious)
3. Little Pad (heh)
4. Wind Chimes (I like this just as much, if not more, than the Smile version)
5. She's Goin' Bald (the "sha na na" part is simultaneously one of the funniest and creepiest things ever)
6. With Me Tonight
7. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (a bit too repetitive, but I like it)
8. Wonderful (I like this version, but isn't anywhere near as great as the Smile version)
9. Whistle In
10. Vegetables (I've never really cared for this song, no matter which version)
11. Gettin' Hungry

This album practically invented Lo Fi.

1. Good Vibrations--- This is probably the best BBs song of all time. It still sounds modern to this day.
2. Heroes And Villains--- Brilliant. Those harmonies are genius, and the backing track played by the WC really rocks.
3. Wonderful--- Amazing vocals. I prefer this version over the SMiLE version.
4. Vegetables--- Only Brian Wilson could pull of a song about vegetables, and make it insanely catchy and brilliant.
5. Little Pad--- It paints a nice picture... A stoned picture at that...
6. Wind Chimes--- I prefer the SMiLE version, but this one is still pretty.
7. Gettin' Hungry--- Pretty catchy, and has some blues influences.
8. She's Goin' Bald--- Druggy craziness, but it works somehow.
9. With Me Tonight- Cool vocals, and good melody.
10. Fall Breaks--- A quirky version of Fire, that's still creepy.
11. Whistle In--- Kind've annoying.
