Title: Rank the tracks #12: Smiley Smile
Post by: Letsgoawayforawhile on December 18, 2012, 08:30:45 AM
Definitely a huge change from Pet Sounds, but packed full of beauty in it's own right. I love all the darkness, and humor.

11. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter - I like this instrumental, I just wish there was more to it than just looping.
10. Whistle In
9. Gettin' Hungry - Nice song. The choruses sound like they would fit perfectly on Wild Honey.
8. With me tonight - Carl sounds really nice here.
7. Wonderful - Really beautiful singing.
6. She's Goin' Bald - This is hilarious.
5. Vegetables - I wonder how many times Al forgot the lyrics.
4. Wind Chimes - I really like this stripped down version. Gotta love that whispering wind part. So pretty.
3. Little Pad - Really love this song. I never knew humming could be so beautiful. These guys must like it too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXa2wyNZoK0
2. Heroes and Villains - Perfection.
1. Good Vibrations - Perfection. The greatest single of all time!

1. Good Vibrations
2. Heroes and Villains
3. Vegetables
4. With Me Tonight

7. She's Goin' Bald

8. Wonderful

10. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (W. Woodpecker Symphony)
11. Gettin' Hungry

I'm never sure how to describe how I feel about this album.  It may be the one I've heard the most, and I'm one to use my listens carefully.  Some of the songs are growers, like this version of Wind Chimes and Little Pad.  Others are instantly enjoyable, like Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains.  I'm still not won over on a few tracks (the bottom four on my rankings).  It's a fascinating listen with the occasional glaring polish in contrast to the minimalism elsewhere.

Far and away my least favorite Beach Boys album (for more than one reason) but I'll play along.
I'm well aware my opinion could be seen as sacrilege to some but these are my honest to God feelings on each track.

1. Good Vibrations - an absolute masterpiece that has no place on this homespun head album.  It should have been on Smile
2. Heroes and Villains - full version should have been on Smile
3. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (W. Woodpecker Symphony) - cool instrumental but it's no "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow"
4. Whistle In - Air?
5. Vegetables - properly finished version should have been on Smile
6. With Me Tonight - almost a song
7. She's Goin' Bald - whatever
8. Wonderful - the epitome of a "bunt instead of a grand slam"
9. Wind Chimes - creepy for creepy's sake?
10. Little Pad - pointless
11. Gettin' Hungry - atrocious

Good Vibrations-It's Good Vibrations...that is all
Heroes and Villains-Not the best version but still good
Little Pad-Seriously one of my favorite BB songs and the stereo version is heaven. Seriously, when the nose kazoos kick in I'm so relaxed!
Vegetables-I like the SMiLE version better but this is still cool.
With me Tonight-The stereo version of this song opened my eyes. Some amazing harmonies.
Wind Chimes-Hate most of this song but the tag saves it. Tag is much better then the SMiLE tag of the same song.
Gettin' Hungry-Nice fun little song. About it.
Whistle In-Nice little closer
She's Goin' Bald-Love the speed up in the middle but He Gives Speeches had more promise
Wonderful-Ugh. They butchered this song bad imo.
Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (Woody Woodpecker Symphony.)-One of the weaker songs.

I was 12 when I first heard it so it was bizzare. Smile I liked right away though when I first heard parts of it in AAB the year before. Don't know why this one took longer to understand.

For the record, I've given this album way more chances than any album ever deserved.  Seriously, I TRIED to like it but to be honest, the ONLY song I EVER remember having to "get into" was "Do You Like Worms", tho to be fair, most of that had to do with trying to get my head around the structure of the song with only partial vocals.  I guess I'm either blessed or cursed.  Songs never "grow" on me and on the other side, the don't "get worn out", no matter how often I hear it.  The song I got closest to getting sick of was Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger" which was #1 the week I got MTV back in the 80's and was therefore played just about every hour.  (Oh for the days when MTV played music...  :-\ )  Bottom line for me is if I have to "talk myself into certain music" it's a huge flag that I just don't enjoy it.  And while I don't want to be presumptuous, I think there's at least a CHANCE that some people wind up embracing this (or I suppose any) "cult classic" due to it's "proto-hipsterness".   ::)

Or maybe the people that like it are hip. When I first heard this album, I didn't even take the group seriously. Three songs in, and I did. It matched up with a lot of music I was particularly into then, such as The 13th Floor Elevators, Syd Barrett, etc. It is mind-damaged, melted art genius, not to be judged in the same way as anything else in the group's canon, including Smile.

Magical album, one of the first I ever heard and probably the one that made me a fan.

1. Good Vibrations
2. Wind Chimes
3. Gettin' Hungry (I hate to see it so far down so many lists, even though the siongs at the bottom of my list are ones I still like a lot.)
4. Little Pad
5. With Me Tonight
6. Wonderful
7. Vegetables
8. Heroes and Villains (I'd get sick of this song if I listened to all the versions, so I only listen to versions with the "Cantina" section.)
9. She's Goin' Bald
10. Whistle In
11. Fall Breaks

do you find the song "Hawaii" pointless? How about "Let's Go Away For Awhile"? "Diamond Head" perhaps?

these songs all have the same basic theme as "Little Pad"

if a song is wistful and transportive, what's pointless about it? seems like you just want to crap all over Smiley Smile.

Title: Re: Rank the tracks #12: Smiley Smile
Post by: Phoenix on December 28, 2012, 11:14:01 AM
Total apples and oranges to me.  I think "Diamond Head" is a great atmospheric instrumental that really conjures the image of the title and I think "Hawaii" is a perfectly fine commercial pop song.  On the other hand I think "Little Pad" didn't have enough to stand on it's own without the added "humor", which I feel like is a punchline without a joke.  Am I supposed to take it serious?  If so, why are you laughing?  Oh right.  Head album.  OK... And if it's a joke, I don't get it.  Oh right again...   :smokin

As I said in my original post, "I'm well aware my opinion could be seen as sacrilege to some but these are my honest to God feelings on each track." One of the good things about the Boys' lengthy career is there's something for everyone.  :)

Smiley Smile is pointless because several songs aren't even 3.5 minutes with a traditional pop song structure. I mean, what the f***?

Not too far off, in accordance to my tastes.  I mean it's not like the band's big claim to fame isn't being the most successful American band on the POP SINGLES CHART!

You know that thing they're really good at?  Personally, I REALLY like it when they do that.

Wow.  That's a lot of effort to miss a point.  You must be proud.  Do I actually have to type "your mileage may vary" to be allowed to disagree.  The point is the band's BIGGEST strength is making great "traditional" pop songs and I (me) really dig it when they do it.

I didn't miss your point, there actually is no point to miss. I was making a joke, that has a sting to it: this IS THE FRICKIN' SMILEY SMILE MESSAGE BOARD, not the Fun Fun Hits USA Board. The Beatles' biggest strength is making great traditional pop songs, as well. Nevertheless, items such as Tomorrow Never Knows are quite incredible. And Brian Wilson's experimental work is even better than that. But hey, I love the wide range of the band's work in the 1960's, and I think that, in fact, is what makes them deserving of such in-depth discussion as found on this board. I'm nutty like that, I don't narrow them down to just one thing. Of course, it is cool if you do, tho.

Apologies.  Just felt like a one-two punch from you and RD0 and thought I was getting ganged up on.  Truthfully, I don't really narrow them down to that one thing; as proved by my love of "Fall Breaks...", "I'm In Great Shape", and so many of their "esoteric" tracks.  As I've said on numerous occasions, I totally understand the whole "music for Brian to cool out to" period.  I just think they should got back to business (literally) a bit sooner. It's just with Smiley Smile (the album) specifically, I've tried (and tried and tried) but it just seems like the audio equivalent of the Fabs' MMT movie: It's just not to my tastes.  :-\

Again, sorry for being snippy.  Please forgive.  :serenade

And if it's a joke, I don't get it.  Oh right again...   :smokin

so in order to enjoy or "get" Little Pad the listener must be stoned?

you can actually remove the first 15 seconds of the song if the boys laughing really bothers you that much. You are still left with a full-fledged tune that runs 2mins and 15 secs. It has 3 distinct sections which is more than a lot of their songs. The spare backing of ukulele and steel guitar make it quite unique in their catalog, not to mention the lazy melody, dreamy harmonies and overall mellow vibe. A feeling of drifting away, whether on a raft or in a daydream.

i don't really feel like they tried to inject the song with humor. I think they captured a very genuine moment on tape where Brian cracked up and the guys followed suit  and he decided to include it as an intro to the song. No joke, no punchline. Just a lighthearted and authentic emotional release that he chose to share with the listener.

One thing Brian was trying to do with SMiLE was to make people laugh and yes... smile. The laughing intro to Little Pad is contagious and never fails to put a smile on my face. Whatever Brian said about laughter being the closest people get to God or the divine because they are in a state of surrender or pure uninhibited emotional response (or words to that effect) he does it in the first few seconds of Little Pad.

pretty ironic considering all the time and work he put into making SMiLE, attempting to achieve just that. are you supposed to take it serious? no. like all good music you are supposed to simply enjoy it and let it move you. if the sound of your favorite band having a laugh upsets you or makes you uncomfortable somehow, then in your words: i don't get it.

Good point.  It's probably a matter of context too.  Here I am, scratching my head, trying (and trying) to get into the album) when I'm hit with that one.  I'll make it a point to listen to it as part of a more broad playlist and see if it does anything for me.  I'm mean, it's not like I WANT to dislike any of their stuff.  :-\

Thing is, I feel they were/are "really good" at about a thousand different things, including beautiful fragments of music strung together cohesively in a non-standard format. I've never touched marijuana in my life and I totally get it. Just me, though, and sorry - didn't mean to make you feel ganged up on.

Mentioned this in another thread, but does anyone know if Wind Chimes was written about Brian's burgeoning mental illness?  I just get that vibe from the song, and the fact that it's followed by Fire on the smile setlist makes me think it's true.  If I'm wrong, does anyone know what the song is actually about?

I don't think Brian was especially aware that there was something really, really wrong with him at this point. He was crushed and disappointed in himself by not being able to complete Smile, sure, but I think the realization only came later on (and likely only happened over time).

This album has really grown on me. Very beautiful in a stoned out way. I can't say I dislike anything on here. I really love the stereo version.

1. Good Vibrations
2. Wind Chimes (the original is my favorite song on TSS, this is an awesome version too)
3. Vegatables (I may like this better then the original)
4. Heroes and Villains (As much as I think I'm tired of it, whenever it plays I'm blown away)
5. Little Pad (The silly laughter at the beginning ruins an other wise fantastically beautiful song)
6. Gettin' Hungry (Seems out of place, works better on my personal Wild Honey album)
8. With Me Tonight (short but extremely beautiful)
9. Whistle In (Has the catchiness of the the Child is the Father of the Man chants)
10. Fall Breaks (I appreciate the creativity)
11. Wonderful (Much weeker then the original)
12. She's Goin Bald (meh)

Don't like this album. A huge mess compared to SMiLE Sessions.

Unlistenable:
11. Wind Chimes - Especially when compared to the Smile version.
10. Wonderful - Same as Wind Chimes.
9. Fall Breaks and Back To Winter
8. Gettin' Hungry

S'okay:
7. Whistle In
6. With Me Tonight
5. She's Goin' Bald - I'd like this track a lot more if it weren't for that goshdarn chipmunk effect.

Pretty good:
4. Little Pad - Apart from the beginning, this is a pretty decent song.
3. Vegetables - I actually like this version of the song. Don't prefer it to the Smile version though.

Classic:
2. Good Vibrations (though it's very close!)
1. Heroes and Villains

Personally i don't really understand how any fan of Brian Wilson could not like this record, but hey ho, each to their own...

It's an almost perfect album, and funnily enough it would achieve perfection if what is almost unarguably the greatest track - Good Vibrations - was removed from the lineup. GV simply doesn't fit, and it really jars arriving as it does in the middle of an otherwise laidback, lo-fi record.

Oh, and She's Goin' Bald is AMAZING!! Great melody, hilarious lyrics, fantastic speeded-up vocals section, great group singing throughout - screw the doubters that's what i say!

Alright, alright, each to his own. I just don't like the album in comparison to The SMiLE Sessions. I just think the versions of Wonderful and Wind Chimes on that album are so much better than the ones they chose to put on here.

You know that thing they're really good at?  Personally, I REALLY like it when they do that.

Thing is, I feel they were/are "really good" at about a thousand different things, including beautiful fragments of music strung together cohesively in a non-standard format. I've never touched marijuana in my life and I totally get it. Just me, though, and sorry - didn't mean to make you feel ganged up on.

Wait, what? Runners has never smoked pot? Am I the only one having trouble coming to terms with this?

The Internet is a very confusing place.

One confusing album but I am starting to warm up to it. I'm starting to see the Smiley and not as much the Smile, if you dig where I'm coming from. I'm not all the way there and I still think there are some problems with this record, but hey, that's the Beach Boys for you....usually...

1. Good Vibrations - Well duh. Not meant for this album at all, but it's here, so...yeah, it's ineffably brilliant and the pinnacle of pop music. I could spend all day talking about this masterpiece, but let's move on.
2. Heroes and Villains - Also brilliant, but troubled, wacky and a little off this plane of existence - thus, it's a perfect encapsulation of Brian Wilson's head. Absolutely amazing.
3. With Me Tonight - Oooh, beautiful. The best of the original (meaning recorded specifically for this album) tunes. LOVE it.
4. Fall Breaks And Back To Winter - Seriously awesome. A nice, nice Cliff's Notes of the Fire music.
5. Gettin' Hungry - One of the most underrated Beach Boys songs. I really, really dig it.
6. Whistle In - Slight and wonderful. I sometimes wish the band would've recorded a full album of wee little snippet tracks like this, Meant for You and You're Welcome. Would've messed with a lot of people's minds.
7. Vegetables - I like this version. The bottle blowing (or whatever you call it) in the background is nifty.
8. Little Pad - Wacky and uh...yeah, I'm starting to like it.
9. Wind Chimes - Creepy but pretty, like a spider web against a stained glass window. The Smile version is a zillion times better, but still nice n' sleepy I s'pose.
10. She's Goin' Bald - Okay. Um...hand me that pot brownie, will ya? This song is...yeah. But not bad at all.
11. Wonderful - The original is my 2nd favorite Smile tune, but this just taints it. Not bad, but...I just don't know.

1. Good Vibrations - 234 (18)
2. Heroes and Villains - 213 (2)
3. Vegetables - 158
3. Little Pad - 158
5. Wind Chimes - 150 (1)
6. With Me Tonight - 143
7. Wonderful - 111 (1)
8. She's Goin' Bald - 99
9. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter - 91 (1)
10. Gettin' Hungry - 85
11. Whistle In - 76

My thoughts? The Smiley version of Wonderful may still be a little high, but most of these rankings make sense.  Good Vibrations cleaning up is no shocker.

From Worst to Best:
11: Fall Breaks And Back To Winter.
10: With Me Tonight.
09: Whistle-In.
08: Good Vibrations (Not that it's a bad song at all, it's a classic. But it fits onto this album worse than Sloop John B on Pet Sounds).
07: Little Pad.
06: She's Goin' Bald.
05: Wonderful.
04: Wind Chimes.
03: Heroes And Villains (The Smile Sessions version is far superior).
02: Gettin' Hungry.
01: Vegetables.

1. Good Vibrations
2. Heroes & Villains (top 2 are too obvious)
3. Little Pad (heh)
4. Wind Chimes (I like this just as much, if not more, than the Smile version)
5. She's Goin' Bald (the "sha na na" part is simultaneously one of the funniest and creepiest things ever)
6. With Me Tonight
7. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (a bit too repetitive, but I like it)
8. Wonderful (I like this version, but isn't anywhere near as great as the Smile version)
9. Whistle In
10. Vegetables (I've never really cared for this song, no matter which version)
11. Gettin' Hungry

This album practically invented Lo Fi.

1. Good Vibrations--- This is probably the best BBs song of all time. It still sounds modern to this day.
2. Heroes And Villains--- Brilliant. Those harmonies are genius, and the backing track played by the WC really rocks.
3. Wonderful--- Amazing vocals. I prefer this version over the SMiLE version.
4. Vegetables--- Only Brian Wilson could pull of a song about vegetables, and make it insanely catchy and brilliant.
5. Little Pad--- It paints a nice picture... A stoned picture at that...
6. Wind Chimes--- I prefer the SMiLE version, but this one is still pretty.
7. Gettin' Hungry--- Pretty catchy, and has some blues influences.
8. She's Goin' Bald--- Druggy craziness, but it works somehow.
9. With Me Tonight- Cool vocals, and good melody.
10. Fall Breaks--- A quirky version of Fire, that's still creepy.
11. Whistle In--- Kind've annoying.

Wind Chimes - The SMiLE version is one of my favorite BB songs, this however is one of my least favorite.

I like the noise fx & "eerie" vibe. The Smile version is too happy-go-lucky. Don't you like the tag in the SS? I think it's beautiful.

It's the best part of that version of WC, but that's not saying much.  Also, I'm not so sure if the SMiLE version could be described as happy-go-lucky, it gets pretty maniacal at about a minute and a half in.

The Smiley Smile version is dark & the Smile version - light. The chorus with the wall of the BBs is definitely not creepy. It brings image of riots, the boys rebel against the government not paying salary etc. The Smiley version is hidden attack, it's a very subtle threat & it's more dangerous because nobody knows when the attack will be. See?

Yeah, I see your point. Still don't like it, but hey, to each their own.

I've somehow always rated it lower among 60's BB albums, but I think this is still great. The purest kind of drug music.

1. Good Vibrations -exceptional.

2. With Me Tonight -great harmony as usual
3. Vega-Tables -superb minimal production

4. Whistle In -cute.
5. She's Goin' Bald -interestingly odd
6. Little Pad -same as above
7. Heroes And Villains -love it, but not this version
8. Fall Breaks and Back To Winter

9. Getting Hungry
10. Wind Chimes

11. Wonderful -unlistenable. Literally ruined the song.

Yes, Brian's voice suits it better. Plus cool harpsichord.
