I have feelings too, you know... in this bleak time of waiting and anticipating, I am searching for the inner me I used to be.

I don't mind celebrating the box with an 18-year-old or a 24-year-old, but I draw the line at a 60-year-old!

Basically, if it ain't on SOS, 80% of the punters ain't gonna know it.

I think you underestimate the musical knowledge of the band's audience.  Do you think Brian Wilson's Smile tour was successful because he played all the hits?

That was successful for the same reason that folk would flock to see the second coming of Christ, even non-Christians/fans etc.

Different audiences. Smile is a legendary work that appeals to the hipster crowd, and Brian Wilson as a name is associated with 'legendary mad genius'. A lot of those people refuse to see the Beach Boys, in any line-up, because they hate Mike Love (I know at least five people who went to those shows who have said this to me). When I've been to Beach Boys shows, though, there have been some of the "Brian" crowd there -- but also many, many people who don't have a clue about the band past the hits. When I saw the reunion tour in Italy, for example, the person I was stood next to in the front row turned to me after the show and said "you must be a superfan!" -- because I'd sung (well, mouthed, so as not to spoil the show for others) along with every song.

It was hard to get a feel for the crowd at Wembley, but at the two Italian gigs I'd guess no more than five percent or so of the audience knew This Whole World, All This Is That or Good Timin'. A sizable chunk probably didn't own even a hits CD, but just liked what they'd heard on the radio. And the same goes for the audiences at every Mike & Bruce show I've ever been to.

In general, audiences at stadium gigs tend not to know that much of a performer's catalogue -- when I went to see Paul McCartney last year, for example, the person sat next to me bellowed along at everything on the Beatles' red or blue compilation albums, but was silent even for the Beatles album tracks (like The Word), let alone McCartney's solo stuff. Audiences at an 'arty' theatrical show have very different expectations.

... which nicely proves my point about the connection between BB fans and fuckwits. Anyone who would elect to miss something as magnificent and soul-enhancing as one of the C50 shows simply because they 'hated' one of the guys on stage is a moron of the first order.

Agree. I went to a show simply dying to hear the songs played live with the real Brian Wilson present. Wasn't looking especially forward to Mike and his cars/skool songs but at least he didn't introduce Bluebirds Over The Mountain in spanish, and for that I am forever grateful.

And, in truth, they don't hate Mike, they hate the image of him they're presented with, or want to believe in. They don't know him at all.

I went to see The Beach Boys - The real Beach Boys - for the first time since 1996 and very probably for the last time ever. And by God, I did.  Grin

That is a basic truth that all fans of whomever should always bear in mind. Good and wise remark.

Yep - I think that's a fair cop. However, music is a broad church, and the BB's current rep (in the UK at least) has a great deal to do with the great enthusiasm of those 'hipsters' who seem to be the popular targets of derision here. They were the ones buying the BW tix, the merch, and writing the articles, posting the blogs, etc. and soforth.

Often those folk are dedicated specialists into a very specific aspect of music. Slating them for not liking the *image* of Mike Love? How about extending the same courtesy to that specialised fan base,  many of whom kept the BW/BB flame alive when most others had lost interest. Fashion sense - not always, but often - has little to do with it.

I don't see that as being quite the same thing. They're not being slated for not liking Mike (or his image, or whatever it is they think they don't like), they're being slated for allowing their apparent hatred of Mike to blind them to the music. No-one has to like Mike, that's up to them – but to miss a classic Beach Boys show is like refusing to drink water because fish swim in it.

I'm not sure I find all Mike' activities and opinions agreeable but the music's something else.

Someone's bound to throw the word "Mike-ist" around any moment now…  LOL

A sorely missed opportunity to cash in on the last visionary genre explorations of Brian Wilson, namely, 'Smart Girls'. Glimpsed briefly during Summer Of Love, and no more.

There is still time, Mike, to make your rap opus. If the powers that be are reading this, I offer my services as producer/hype man (a task for which I am already suitably monickered)

I do.  Well, not on a personal level.  But his (or her...hell, I don't know) version of Smile was my favorite...still might be.  Very Zappa-esque but totally Brian.
