No problem man.

Btw, the previews on zippyshare have some weird phase effect going on. So rest assured the downloaded versions won't have that.

That's some kickass My Solution right there! Finally I can put that in a playlist with some dignity ^^

Loved the mini-Smile! Always great to hear new ideas of how to mix that material. Because all the music fragments are somewhat related to each other the mixing often results in pure listening pleasure.

Amazing job on My Solution! I was sad when it wasn't on MIC but hey, that's that problem solved coz this sounds release-worthy quality!

Keep it up! (Could you do the same with Carry Me Home perhaps?)

Stereo SMiLE Mini-Mix Vol. 2 (Various mash-ups of SMiLE vocals + alternate instrumental takes)
http://www20.zippyshare.com/v/65727624/file.html

This one is such a trip - truly the most psychedelic "interpretation" of SMiLE I've heard. Great job.

Seltaeb, you're a wizard. My enjoyment of Smile has been greatly enhanced by your fantastic mixes, Look and Holidays especially. You should post those for those who may never have heard them.

Any chance to get hold of HV-B&M without "crackling"?
Tnx
Great job indeed, especially on This whole world! Love the outro on that one...

I could give it a try, but chances are it wont be nearly as good as My Solution. The source was decent quality... def from an earlier generation than the version on Youtube.

The quality has to be decent going into it. For instance, I made "Rolling Up To Heaven" sound a lot better. Stuff of that quality I can improve. But if I recall, Carry Me Home sounds like a 40th generation tape or something.

Since you like your 'vinyl' endings, I have the sound of my old suitcase player rejecting somewhere on here if you want it. I used it in my Music tech coursework for precisely that reason :D

Great work!  Have you written anywhere about your methodology?  As a sound engineer myself, I'm very curious!

I wasn't able to listen to several tracks, most notably Darlin , which i was most excited about.  Hopefully you can post it elsewhere.  Thanks so much Smiley

Well, the official stereo remix of Darlin' is out now, so I think it renders my version obsolete. But, here it is if you were curious: http://www29.zippyshare.com/v/58796526/file.html

As far as the methods used, usually it's a matter of trying to isolate as many elements as possible. With "A Thing Or Two", "Darlin", "Little Girl I Once Knew", etc I grabbed what I could from Sea Of Tunes, then went into Izotope RX and extracted the vocals. Sometimes I'll use the "Center Channel Extractor" in Adobe Audition, or just the OOPS effect if there's something panned hard left or right that I could use. There's some other trickery involved from song to song. For instance, in "The Little Girl I Once Knew" I looped certain parts. Like the final part where they go into D major, I grabbed that from the chorus since it was a cleaner extraction, then crossfaded it into the rest of the original section. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer!

Thanks a lot for the link to Darlin (awesome to hear the horns properly), and that pretty much answers my question.  Wondered if you were using Melodyne or something (that something being Izotopes RX) to separate elements from mono mixes, then panning them around.  Or were using phase cancellation on different mixdowns to isolate elements.

I'm still a little puzzled at where all the source material is coming from, for Wild Honey especially.  Didn't know there was stereo tracks floating around out there!  Very impressed with not only your mixing, but the sourcing of this stuff.  I'll do a bit more research before asking more questions Smiley

Could you please make a mix of Can't Wait to Long as it might have sounded as 4-5 minute pop song ?

Hmm. Not sure how I could make it any better than the versions that are around. But I'll think about it, for sure.

Really glad you were able to make this...soundable..
Any chance of doing the same with Love/adult child demos? I'm really into them and found them great, so raw and brilliant.. also with "Oh lord" from sessions with Dennis from 80's..
so if you can do something to clear them up, would be eternal grateful to sort of speak:)
Cheers
