Jerry Lee Lewis's country music is top notch, some of the absolute best country music of the 60's and 70's.  He has so much soul and swag that it really worked well with the country stuff.  My favorite of his would probably be a room full of roses.

Jerry Lee Lewis:  A Room Full Of Roses

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv6wuW2q_fA

He could basically cover any country song and it would be fantastic.  Imagine how cool Gilley's must have been back in the 70's with Mickey Gilley and Jerry Lee playing piano weekly in that place.  Holy sh*t.

I couldn't agree more. This is some of the best country music ever recorded imo. It still sounds so fresh and exciting.
Also I really like his live band from these years. You can see them a.o. at the Toronto Peace Festival and the "The Many Sounds Of Jerry Lee Lewis"-performances and then there's that very fine live album "Live at the International". Really a great country band that knew how to rock for sure.

Back in the 70s, some of my stoner pals  were infiltrated with Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Poco, Flying Burrito Brothers..."Country Rock" I guess.  I like a lot of that stuff -- the Gram Parsons Burritos particularly -- but another group I hung with, we listened to Jerry Lee a lot.  We were more drinkers than stoners of course.  I remember an LP called "I40 Country" -- on 8 track.  Also the mentioned "Another Place Another Time," "Southern Roots," and "The Session" (not so country).  Also saw him perform live at a county fair in the mid 70s.  Perfunctory and then on a dime absolutely transcendent.

I probably mentioned my boy Gary Stewart earlier in this thread but I'm not going back to check.  His whiskey tenor was compared to Lewis when he first appeared and seems to have had the same wild blood.  Anyway, the two of them make up my Country Top 2.

I ran across this clip of Gene Watson (amazing) doing "You Gave Me A Mountain".  Marty Robbins wrote it, but I always knew the Elvis version....

HOLY MOLEY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUZb29Iwlms

I don't want to talk badly of the King, Elvis' version is fantastic but this version by Gene Watson really moves me.  It's so much more soulful, seems legit.  I realize some people won't appreciate his voice but to me this is about as good as it gets in country music.

Yes, with a typically great lead by Willie Nelson.

I really can't think of anything on that album that's not at least very good.

This was linked to on John Fogerty's facebook-page with a blink to yesterday's CMA's. From 2011's CMAs.... This has got to be one of the worst performances I've ever heard. If this is the best modern country music has to offer I don't wanna imagine what the worst sounds like.... Anyway:

Question to Ron & Rocker:

I'm watching this horror & there is 2 songs never heard by me - can you ID them? Searching by lyrics didn't help. Take a listen:

1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=JAsX9Mg_Ij4#t=1550 (25:50 - 27:27)

2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=JAsX9Mg_Ij4#t=1685 (28:05)

Thank you both/either in advance.

Yeah, that's pretty bad.  These things usually are... all three of those singers are very talented, but this is outside their wheelhouse.

- Carrie Underwood : Great singer, but this song is way too gnarly for her, she sounds like a pussycat trying to sing it.

- Miranda Lambert : Exact same problem

- Brad Paisley : I like Brad a lot, he's a great human being and a great songwriter... but his guitar playing is the equivalent of Christina Aguilera's singing... very talented, but way over the top.  I don't know why he plays like that, and to be honest I've never really liked his tone.  He's a very competent player though, and a great songwriter.

--------------------------------------------------------

If they really wanted to do the song justice, they should have just slowed it down and made it a blues song.  Imagine it slow and acoustic, it'd be great, and maybe they could add something to it.  Trying to Kick Ass better than John Fogerty is going to be a losing proposition every time.

Big & Rich.... not sure if anybody here knows much about them, but these guys are really talented.  some of their stuff is kind of hard to get into, but John Rich writes some really good country songs.  They're also both great singers in my opinion.  It's mostly all sh*t kicking stuff though so if you just can't get into that you won't like it... but the guy is GREAT with Melodies.  He's similar to a guy like David Allan Coe.

If anybody wants to give it a try, here's a few great songs

Big & Rich - Big Time

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssHnkroH8tI

This is one of Big & Rich's great songs where they sing the whole lead in two part harmony.  I love that sound.

---------------------------------------------------

Faith Hill & Tim McGraw - Like We Never Loved At All

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzpd3wO9X2Y

Again with a great melody.  Just the way it's so bouncy and simple I think is the mark of how talented John is.  Fantastic song writer, and Faith is just an angel in my opinion.

----------------------------------------------------

Gretchen Wilson - When I Think About Cheatin'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukBiKhxxu0s

Just straight up country.  Wonderful.  Obviously in the style of Tammy Wynette - ish ballads.

----------------------------------------------------

Faith Hill - Sunshine & Summertime

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3b10MUBHvM

Catchy, poppy, just edgy enough to be cool.... this is John's forte, this type of song that's just infectious as hell.  It's interesting that he can take someone as 'safe' as Faith Hill and write a song for her that works.  Very talented songwriter, in my opinion.

----------------------------------------------------

John Rich - Shuttin' Detroit Down

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33Io6uBtSik

This is slightly political, and usually I can't stand that crap... but this is universal and populist enough that it doesn't really bother me, John stickin' up for the little man!  (It's about the bank bailouts)   Again with the melodies, though, the guy has a knack for writing catchy sh*t.

--------------------------------------------------------

Big & Rich - Never Mind Me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzKKpoJB8JU

Another fantastic two part harmony song, and again catchy as hell with a neck breaking melody.

--------------------------------------------------------

Big & Rich - 8th Of November

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozpdBvB0hek

Intro by Kris Kristofferson, biographical song based on the story of a black medic who heroically saved several soldiers on a bad day in Vietnam, amazing song written by John.  More incredible two part lead vocal harmony.

-------------------------------------------------------

Tim McGraw - California

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvoVms9oZPs

This is on Tim's new album, just released... John's still got it.  Catchy as hell, cleverly written, I'm sure this will be a huge hit.

Country is one of those areas that makes fascinating reading----read this great biography of Patsy Cline a while back----but just doesn't register with me musically. (Jazz is more likely to hit me, but only slightly more.)

I do like some crossover stuff (the prime example being Skeeter Davis's magical "End Of The World"). But, at the risk of upsetting country fans everywhere, this KLF track featuring Tammy Wynette is probably my favourite (*runs for cover*):

Super cool Jim & Jesse McReynolds live version of "The Great Speckled Bird" from the 60's

top-level mandolin and dobro action on that one.

Here's a current video of Jesse McReynolds in his 90's still playing...

Check out this amazing video of Jimmie Rodgers from 1930 if you haven't seen it... it's an early 'talkie' and he does three of his famous yodels.  Pretty incredible to watch, not just because of his talent but because it kind of gives you a glimse at how entertainment was presented in 1930, and a stylized romanticized view of what life was supposed to be like back then.

And here's the awesome "Dumas Walker" from about two months ago

I think it's interesting to note that Howlin' Wolf said Jimmie's yodeling was the inspiration to his own howling.

We lost Sonny James yesterday, they were playing tributes to him on the Grand ol' Opry tonight.  Very good voice way back in the day...

He had a number 1 hit with "Running Bear", which was actually written by the Big Bopper (the Big Bopper wrote 3 #1's, Running Bear, Chantilly Lace, and White Lightnin')... but his biggest hit was with "Young Love", what a fantastic vocal.  The people who knew him on the Opry tonight said his nickname of "The Southern Gentleman" was a perfect fit because he was one of the nicest people in the business.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp66IWK0m5M

Such a fantastic melody, too...

It's amazing how that guy on the right looks like Conway Twitty, too... I don't think it's him though (people would make a bigger deal out of it if it was), and he looks just slightly different.  Uncanny resemblance, though...

Heard a great song today I hadn't heard in forever listening to the great Eddie Stubbs on WSM this evening (you can listen anytime live at wsmonline.com) out of Nashville.  He played Merle Haggard's "Leonard", a fantastic song written about his buddy, check it out if you haven't heard it.  I love that line "I wondered if I'd ever see him sober... but I'd forgot about a friend that Leonard knew".  Merle's such a great songwriter, he has a special gift.

Check out this amazing video of Michael Martin Murphey doing his famous "What's Forever For?" 32 years after it was released live on t.v.

This guy's voice is so special.  He's 69 years young in this video.
