Has the original 'Beach Boys In Concert LP' setlist been bootlegged?
«

I was just reading on Wikipedia that there was an earlier, much shorter version of the In Concert LP with completely different tracklist:
Side 1
"Wouldn't It Be Nice"
"Leaving This Town"
"Heroes and Villains"
"Marcella"
"You Need a Mess of Help To Stand Alone" <------
Side 2
"Let the Wind Blow"
"Do It Again"
"Wild Honey" <-------
"Fun Fun Fun"
"Jumpin' Jack Flash"
The version of "Heroes and Villains" from this album was later released on the Endless Harmony Soundtrack CD.
THE QUESTION:
HAS THIS BEEN BOOTLEGGED? Would be great to hear these songs in In Concert quality!

No it hasn't but I would love for there to be a boot LP and CD. Or even better a legit one.

This one is high on my "to have heard"-list, but chances are low that that will happen, I'm afraid.
I know of 2 testpressing that exist(ed). One is supposed to be in possession of one Brad E., the other one was owned by a member of this board, but you don't want to know what happened to that record...
The Heroes And villains performance of this single LP has officially been released. It can be found on the Endless Harmony soundtrack album. So tapes are still to be found somewhere in the faults
EDIT: Steve M. was quicker with his answer than I thought.

Maybe a 50th anniversary release of "In concert" with this first version as a bonus ?

May I ask how you got hold of it in the first place, or is that incriminating information?

I'm not really down with what live boots are out there from the period, but is there enough material from this time (seemingly a live peak for the band) to put out an In Concert pt 2, with alternative versions and different tracks? I know people are keen for a release of the Carnegie Hall show, but it strikes me that not all the performances are of a great standard, despite some stunners. A compilation might be able to get around this problem.

I know I say this a lot, but my favourite show from the period is the Hartford 1973 one. Lots of rarities (River Song, for one), the performances are stellar, Dennis is very present, and if mixed properly (Its a soundboard recorded for the album so presumably the tapes are about somewhere) the performances both vocally and instrumentally are great. Only problem is there's a lot of doubling with In Concert itself (We Got Love, Marcella, the Pet Sounds songs, and so on), so maybe as part of a bigger set. The Carnegie show sounds great, but then they do spend a lot of time changing the snare drum.
One good way to do it considering this would to make a 'pseudo-concert' similar to Dylan's 'Rolling Thunder' Bootleg series - just present the best performances and offbeat choices from the entire period. That way, you'd be able to make a set including Cuddle Up, I've Got A Friend, River Song, Wild Honey, Wonderbill, Jumpin' Jack Flash, and so on that the 'one representative show' thing would have to leave out, out of necessity. Problem is, you'd have to turn three years of heavy touring - 1971 to 1974 - into two discs maximum....

thanks for the well wishes. yes, free from all that 3 year crap. no stress now. actually buying a new house. lots to look forward to.
back in the 80's and 90's i subscribed to discovery and goldmine and stuff like that. found it in goldmine..paid $300 for it around the late 80's i think. i used to collect anything remotely beach boy related. a hoarder i guess. i knew the condition of it before i bought it but thought what the heck..got it anyway.

Yeah this is kind of what I meant. It could really make for a great set if there's more stuff of a similar standard to In Concert.
Great to hear about that Hartford 1973 show, thanks. Shall put my googling skills to the test ...
Any other shows to recommend from this period?

IIRC Alan Boyd mentioned that tehre are hours of live material recorded for the "In concert"-project

Releasing the 1 lp 'In Concert' on vinyl as a record store day release would be awesome.
I'd prefer one full show over a pseudo show but that's just me. I'd buy a pseudo show regardless, but I'd prefer a full show with a bonus disc of live tracks that weren't included on the full show. That way you get the best of both worlds.

A comprehensive live overview of the 1971-1974 period would probably be my next-most-desired BBs archival release, now that Smile is out. I wish Sea of Tunes could have gotten ahold of those live tapes...

Ah Ha Ha Ha Ha! Geez. Do you know what a PM is, bud ?? That's what you do when you want to trade stuff, especially bootlegs.
P.S. Do some research. There's a lot more 70's shows other than the Hartford one floating around out there!

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Do we know when and where each song from the original single LP was recorded? It would be interesting to "recreate" the original rejected LP from audience sources, Endless Harmony, etc.

Crap I totally meant for that to be a PM. Had no intention of flaunting the rules re: bootlegs. I think I clicked on "quote" to pull the relevant passage for a PM, and then apparently forgot what I was doing or something.

That would be a cool idea. It could even be done similar to the Smile Sessions. Release a regular release pseudo show and release a box set with the 1 lp 'In Concert' on vinyl and 3 or 4 full length shows from this period on cds (that the pseudo show is created from). That would be a really cool set.

I have one of the test pressings, albeit in the same condition as Steve's prior to the fire. Waiting for it to unwarp.
I've had it suggested to get one of the $$$$ turntables that play at 16 RPM, so as to negate the warp at speed, record it and use the computer to revise the speed.
By the time I win the lottery and can afford the turntable, I expect all the recordings to be officialy released.
Unless someone wants to bring a turntable by the house....
