"All I Wanna Do"

Wouldn't it be nice: 6
God only knows: 4
Surf's up: 4
Good vibrations: 3
All I wanna do: 2
All this is that: 2
H&V: 2
Funky pretty: 2
Looks like WIBN is the top favorite. Best bridge ever written imo.

I think WIBN really showcases everything that makes the Beach Boys great: beautiful harmonies, upbeat rhythm, sad lyrics. It's like every Beach Boys song rolled into one.
Some people think that WIBN is sad? To me, it's the opposite of sad- the epitome of youthful optimism, love, & hope. Strange how art can be interpreted so differently. Now- Caroline No- that's sad. I wonder if some people actually think that's a happy song.

I think Wouldn't It Be Nice is sad from the perspective that you only get that "new love" feeling that the song is celebrating at the start of a relationship.

Naw, if the song was called 'It Currently Is Nice' it'd be a different story! As it is, there's pain and sadness in the lyrics. I mean, the narrator has to endure the pain of not having the type of relationship he truly wants with this girl he adores and there's that factor of us not knowing if it ever was nice for the guy. What happens if all he ever did was think and wish and hope and pray that it might come true? That wouldn't be happy!

If I had to choose two adjectives to describe WIBN's lyrics, I wouldn't pick pain and sadness. Hope and longing.

For pain and sadness I think it would be "It Would Have Been So Nice"

Fair call, though the guy could've been really sensitive and insecure  Cheesy.

Don't Worry Baby. Brian's best vocal (other than PLMW maybe) and my favorite Mike part ever "Now doooooooooooon,..."
And Denny also makes his presence known.

I think I've decided on Please Let Me Wonder.... it says all I ever wanted to say. The video on American Band kicks donkey, if just for Brian's eye movement.... (man-crush alert)...

Yep, for me too it's Time To Get Alone. I am amazed I haven't got sick of that song yet - I have played it so many times! It sums up everything that's great about the Beach Boys in one song. Of course there are so many others that you could easily listen to all day every day for the rest of your life, but this is mine.

If anyone doesn't get why Wouldn't It Be Nice is sad, watch the film Shampoo. Check out how it is used, as a symbol of the death of 60's idealism and optimism. Then check out how that connects with the lyrics of Caroline No. Brian knew what he was doing when he put those songs at the beginning and ending of the album. It is a journey from bittersweet optimism to bittersweet sadness full stop. Even Sloop John B has sadness encoded into its matrix.

I Just Wasn't Mad For These Times.

The instrumentation, the arrangement, the harmonies, the layers of vocals, the electro-theremin and woodwinds in the break. Perfection.

The Brianista Prayer

Oh Brian
Thou Art In Hawthorne,
Harmonied Be Thy name
Your Kingdom Come,
Your Steak Well Done,
On Stage As It Is In Studio,
Give Us This Day, Our Shortenin' Bread
And Forgive Us Our Bootlegs,
As We Also Have Forgiven Our Wife And Managers,
And Lead Us Not Into Kokomo,
But Deliver Us From Mike Love.
Amen.  ---hypehat

I don't think anyone's ever agreed on this. This board's "Definitive Vocal Credits" list, a result of great arguing for months, says it was Brian. But who knows?
