Does anybody think we will get their main studio (and live) albums re-released next year? Or maybe just a few deluxe editions?

I'm not entirely sure it would make much sense for Capitol to release something like Little Deuce Coupe or Friends in a stand alone package.

I mean, I can see Sunflower and Surf's Up  (and maybe Holland ) getting deluxe treatment, because they are considered part of the boys artistic high point.

Anyways, I think at the worst they should do a few deluxe editions of their top work besides Pet Sounds and SMiLE, and the box set. At best, I think they should re-release every album with bonus tracks. And on top of that, have the box set, which would then include even more stuff.

What does everybody think? I know I don't wanna go overboard on this, but I must admit, I'm super excited to see what kinda previously unreleased material we get. Once has to figure that next year is our best shot to hear some things that we have wondered about for a while.

So what route does everybody think they will take?

I'm not sure what route they'll eventually take. But as far as re-issues, I'd love for them to do something like what was done with The Beatles a couple years ago and release both the original stereo and mono album mixes. I think it might be a long shot, but I'm hopeful.

The new stereo mixes are nice and interesting, but what I really want to hear are the albums the way Brian intended them to be.

Was here a mono version of Summer in Paradise?

Gotta remember that the mono/stereo thing only works for the 60s albums - you gotta think of something else for the other 40 years of output... Well, maybe not 40 active years but you get my drift...

Oh, I know. I was only thinking that far into it. For later albums such as Love You, it would be great to get a deluxe version with demos, alternate takes, etc. The same could be done with mono/stereo releases since early albums were fairly short.

Was there a mono version of Summer in Paradise?

Probably no mono mix of Summer In Paradise, there is the U.K. version of it, though. Which does boast sum boast some alternate, in some cases, improved mixes.

I´d love to see deluxe editions of every album up to Love You! Not sure I would buy a deluxe edition of "Beach Boys" or "summer in paradise" Wink

I'd buy all deluxe versions that were released, but I'm not sure how much material exists for deluxe versions of The Beach Boys through Summer In Paradise. Aside from stand alone singles such as "Rock and Roll To The Rescue," "California Dreamin'," etc.

I think a re-issue of The Beach Boys, Still Cruisin' or Summer In Paradise could actually be pretty interesting, as they released quite a lot of songs in the 80s and 90s that were only available on singles or compilations:

East Meets West (w/ The Four Seasons)
Rock And Roll To The Rescue
California Dreamin' (1983 and 1986 versions)
Lady Liberty
Happy Endings (w/ Little Richard)
Kokomo (Spanish version)
Don't Worry, Baby (w/ The Everly Brothers)
Still Cruisin' (Beach Party Mix)
Problem Child
Fun, Fun, Fun (w/ Status Quo)
Chasin'  The Sky
Crocodile Rock
Runaway (live)
Back In The USSR (live w/ Ringo Starr)
Come Go With Me (live w/ Oak Ridge Boys)
Surfer Girl (live w/ Julio Iglesias)
Barbara Ann (live w/ Jimmy Page & Friends)
Summer In Paradise (live at Wembley)

A limited edtion box set with all the albums remastered in stereo would be unreal..

I don't have a lot of faith in capitol when it comes to this anniversary but I hope they do the right thing

I'm hoping for a box set of all the Beach Boys studio albums (and a few live), remastered ala Pink Floyd's Discovery box set or the 2009 Beatles box sets. Some albums probably can't be released in true stereo, but if Capitol were to include a few albums in stereo that can be, that would be cool. Grin

I also wouldn't mind if this whole reunion is just focused on "Wild Honey"

Preforming Wild Honey in full, Wild Honey box, vinyl, 2CD, Stereo Mix, T-Shirts, Surfboards , The whole lot.

Mike Love could also take off his baseball cap, Brian could sing golden falsetto, Al won't have to constantly adjust his guitar, Jeff will be singing bass, and Bruce wouldn't pistol whip a soul.....

Hits collection will be for Joe Public who doesn't want to spring from the more expansive box set.  Think of it like the 2CD version of "SMiLE" versus the deluxe box set.

A complete box set of their studio catalog would be the best thing to do.  Considering many other acts have already done this: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis etc....they would only be keeping up with the current trend.  If there was any time a fan would gobble up such a box set would be right in the middle of a huge 50th Anniversary year...so this is the time to release it.

I'd buy that in a second especially if they went the classy route that The Beatles and Dylan went essentially making these sets into miniature replica LPs complete with any necessary inserts and going so far as to even reproduce the inner sleeve art as it appeared in the sixties.

I'd like a remixed Summer In Paradise, take down the level and reverb of the drums, remove that damn phasing on the vocals and destroy Summer of Love and you have a reasonable (still veering towards the grounds of poor, but reasonable) album which would of sold more than 1000 copies. I always surprised that they didn't get Brian to give them some "Sweet Insanity" tracks for this project, though I'm not sure when SI ended SiP begun and when the delandyfication started, maybe it wasn't a possibility.. I shall never hear my 45 of Smart Girls and Summer of Love <EXTREME SARCASM>

I think there could be some good tracks for a BB85 deluxe edition, there's the original mix of the album (I don't know what's out there, but I believe that the alternate mix of "Getcha Back" and "She Believes in Love Again" come from this, they would be nice to hear in decent quality), then there's "Oh Lord" which although apparently only an instrumental track, would still be amazing to hear (plus most the vocals of the demo are easy to extract with that Izotope program, I've done it with reasonable results, and I'm just an untrained guy with too much spare time, there would be fan mixes), stuff like "Chasin' The Sky" and other bits and bobs, hell, even "At The Hop" in good quality may sound pretty cool.

15 Big Ones and Love You both have original mixes from Brian which we haven't heard in good quality, I'd like those too, and the myriad outtakes from 15 Big Ones.

"Go Get That Girl" in good sound quality would be another standout for me, I freakin' LOVE that one.

I got a bit carried away there.. sorry  LOL

So would I, John.  I'm really hoping they take the initiative to do this.  I would love to see a Beach Boys box set right up on the shelf with my Beatles and Dylan sets.  Like I said, if there was ever a time to pull this off---the 50th Anniversary would be that time.

If anything, they DESERVE a box set. They're undisputedly one of the most influential bands ever recorded and as many here have stated, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Dylan have all gotten box sets.

"Deserve" has nothing to do with it.  The issue is whether it would make money, and nothing that anyone has mentioned in this thread would--except the hits package.

Why not focus on the attainable, like a single disc of unissued material?

Why not focus on the attainable, like a single disc of unissued material?

A lot of sets like this though including "The Beatles In Mono" and the Dylan Mono are first marketed as limited editions and sold to high end affluent collectors instead of the general music buying public.  For instance "The Beatles In Mono" was initially marketed as the hardcore collector's alternative to the more common stereo remasters.  The mono box was ordered in limited quantities by stores, priced at an appreciable sum and even marketed by EMI as a limited edition.  In addition the music contained on the mono set has never been available as standalone discs and can to this day only be found as part of the mono box set.  I believe everything I just mentioned regarding The Beatles set is applicable to the Dylan set as well.

Yet both sold mainly due to word of mouth, rave reviews in magazines that cater to such collectors and online shops such as Amazon.  In fact The Beatles set outperformed expectations where EMI actually had to go into a second pressing therefore taking the set from what was originally planned as a limited edition to a wide release that is available to this day.

You put a package like this together for The Beach Boys with the high standard applied to The Beatles and Dylan packages and it will sell.  You just have to be intelligent enough to know where to draw the line.  Something like this would be snapped up by the same baby boomer audience that the Dylan and Beatles packages were aimed towards:

Surfin' Safari
Surfin' USA
Surfer Girl
Little Deuce Coupe
Shut Down Volume 2
All Summer Long
The Beach Boys Today!
Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)
Beach Boys' Party!
Pet Sounds
Bonus Disc: Containing Singles & A Few Rarities

They actually already have a box set (Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys) and it did sell extremely well going gold only four months after it's release.  While I wouldn't mind the appearance/release of another box set in 2012 and would in fact welcome it, I wonder how it will differ from the GV box which was pretty nice issue back in 1993.  I also fail to see from the early descriptions as to how it's going to deviate much from the 93' box set in terms of approach and execution.  I'm sure that Mark Linett and Alan Boyd will have some nice surprises for us but technically a career spanning box set is already available on the market.

For the last four 1960's Capitol albums, how much could be added? The "Wild Honey" album & some of the "Smiley Smile" tracks could be remixed for stereo. As for presenting "Friends" in both mono & stereo, only "Friends" & "Little Bird" ever received dedicated mono mixes(for the single. Countries that released a mono "Friends" album released a fold-down)

Unreleased songs? When I posed the question(in the 1990's) to an EMI executive in London, I was told that the unreleased songs from the "Smiley Smile" sessions had not been found. Yes, you could add tracks to "Wild Honey", such as "With a Little Help From My Friends", "The Letter", "Lonely Days", the extended "I Was Made to Love Her", plus the unreleased "Game of Love"(a cover version of the Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders hit) and "Honey Get Home"(or "Honey Go Home") which is reportedly a backing track fragment. One problem in adding songs to "Wild Honey" or "Friends" is that much of the unreleased material was released on "20/20".  As for the "Friends"-era track "Even Steven"? It's a working title for "Busy Doing Nothin' "

The origins of the "20/20" album have more than a bit in common with The Rolling Stones' "Tattoo You", The Monkees' "Instant Replay" or Led Zeppelin's "Physical Grafitti", in that all of these albums combined a half an album of newly recorded material with rejected/leftover songs from previous album sessions. As we all know, "20/20" made use of tracks from the "Smile", "Wild Honey" & "Friends" sessions. It must be assumed that the leftover "Smiley Smile" tracks had already been lost or disposed of by 1969. If these recordings still existed in 1969, they must have been considered not good enough to release.
