"I have a few ideas in my head," Love said. "A couple of them are more retro, as in '64- or '65-type sounding stuff, like 'Fun, Fun, Fun' and 'California Girls.' But then my cousin Brian's ideas have a bit more of the 'Pet Sounds' kind of vibe to the music. It'll be a combination of the different musical aspects of the Beach Boys."

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Mike Love is still wanting to write 'fun in the sun' songs as he did in his early 20s, almost 50 years later? Stop the presses!

lol...it seems that thosse are the ONLY songs that he wants to reccord (other then country of course)..they should just mix it up and have both fun in the sun and experamental and not fight over it and make it a cd that shows all their differrent styles after all it IS an anniversary cd..just please NO COVER TUNES!!!! You guys are way too harsh on the Love. The man is aware of his limitations. He knows he's not the Salvador Dali of music - what do you expect from him? He knows what he likes and what a good portion of the audience has always liked - the classic Beach Boys sound which is based largely on that feel-good ethic Mike is always pushing. Brian did some interesting music but even he never ventured too far from the same place Mike is coming from. This is kind of what my "Brian needs a number one single" thread was about - Mike & Brian have the same materialistic ambitions yet Mike is endlessly criticized for it while Brian is praised despite it. What is the Gershwin & Disney album if not a way to try and make some $$$ for all involved? $$$ is Mike's middle name.

Wanting a hit has nothing to do with being materialistic though - Brian wants acclaim/validation, not money.  That's how he's always been.  It just so happens that money is often a byproduct of said acclaim. Brian's latest projects seem to be more aimed at keeping him active and adding some nice little footnotes to his resume - surely Brian doesn't mind making money, but that has never been the reason he makes music.  You can't really say the same about Mike (not that he doesn't have his reasons for being that way).

In 1976 in TV he said he believed that money can buy you happiness. Ergo, more money = more birthday cakes = more happiness. The logic is quite simple in BW land if you just add a birthday cake to each situation.

Mike's ideas aren't all that stupid and people love fun/summer/girls/cars anyway. Beach Boys or no Beach Boys.

If you can manage to remove the "Myke" from "Mike, there is a lot to admire. Just listen to Kayla's version of It's OK, and you can easily imagine some pop star of today making the thing a gigantic hit.

I don't think Mike necessarily means surf or fun-in-the-sun songs (at least I hope so) but just some "Mr Positive" stuff. Retro like Cool Head, Warm Heart is ok with me, if it's not the whole album. Listen to his Mike Love Not War album and I guess that's what he means. There are some good songs on it.

I don't know if this is more of that newborn satire but I would actually be interested in hearing that album if 'Myke' sings lead on each track. Produced by Brian Love You style.

Listen to his Mike Love Not War album and I guess that's what he means. There are some good songs on it.

Mike is a good example of a solid songwriter who can't really stand on his own two feet.  He was great when he was with the Beach Boys, surrounded by other talented people, but he'll never be able to write songs that stand on their own two feet.

That's why i'm excited to see if him and Brian actually do write some new music.  I think the potential is great.  The two of them could bring out the best in each other again, or they could bring out the worst in each other.  We'll just have to see what happens.  They truly were great when they wrote together, though.

BTW "Cool Head, Warm Heart" was pretty well written.  It was mature, but also still a Beach Boys type song.  People give Mike way too much crap, he's truly doing the best he can.  In that interview he talks about how he doesn't understand the lyrics of Smile, and says that's his opinion and he's sticking to it! and laughs.  He realizes what people think of him, but what's he supposed to do?

It's like when he gave Willie Nelson criticism on the way he was singing "The Warmth of the Sun".  He didn't mean to be a jerk, he just came off as one.  Nobody in their right mind would correct Willie Nelson's phrasing, but he can't help himself.  He probably felt like sh*t about it later.  He's the ultimate Dork.

I believe Jan & Dean actually did do a reunion single in the '70s called "Fun City."

Maybe they'll join with the Smurfs and do the  honourable, high brow, respectable thing......Smurfin' USA. Or Smurfin' Safari.

Seriously Mike probably does know what he does best, and let's be honest. If you got somebody to pull things together, an arranger, an album of four or five fun toe-tapping but simple songs with four or five more musically interesting Brian-esque compositions and maybe something by Al or Bruce too could actually be pretty good. Mike's songs about girls and cars with a catchy beat might just get radio play and attention for the album, whereas the other songs would be the meat on the bones.

Well, jan did record a song with that name. I'm not sure if it was Jan&Dean though. They did a re-recording of "Sidewalk surfin'" in the 70s.

I was just remembering that Mike recorded 10,000 years ago for his Mike Love Not War album. That one was written with Dennis iirc (there's a background track produced by Dennis on bootlegs). I think those kind of things could work for a new Beach Boys album.

It was Jan & Dean. Oddly enough, though Dean is on both of those recordings, on "Fun City" is credited to Jan & Dean. Unless you mean Dean's re-recording, as opposed to Jan's.

Why hasn't Mike ever written with Bruce? They've been touring together all this time.
Brian and Mike should make an Abbey Road-type album, just in terms of one side being the vision of one guy and the other side being the vision of the other guy. One side can be all fun in the sun, and the other can be artsy. Then again, maybe Brian wants to write more fun in the sun songs.

Well yes. I think that idea would really get interesting if Brian did the fun in the sun side, and Mike got artsy.

They could call the album "Don't F**k With The Formula"

In fact, that title alone would guarantee them a number one album and re-connect them with the underground for a fourth time.

Mike Love can do artsy - Let The Wind Blow, anyone? The man is a poet and a visionary. You know he's a certified TM teacher? That means he's like, holy.
