I want to see this completed. I don't know all the session details myself though. People need to focus on doing something cool like this instead of retreading the same old mike love killed smile arguments for the 1000000000000000000000000000th time.

Did you guys run Phil Cohen off the board? 'Cause it looks like he'd have some ideas ... from his Smile Extra boot.

Yes, they did run Phil Cohen away. It seems even some board members sent him some pretty nasty emails from what I've heard. I hope he comes back eventually, it was pretty idiotic how upset some people got about him and how rude they were about it.

Not trying to get off topic but did that seriously happen?! I hate when people get mad on the internet.

Oddly, I was asking someone about this a while back, and if I can find what they said in the mess that is my desktop, I'll tell you, but one thing I do recall: although there's no disputing Carol Kaye was on several sessions for the track, it's 99% likely that she's not actually on the released version.

I have little doubt that Andrew relishes pointing that out to her every time he and Carol meet up for galotails {that originally said co ck ta il s but it appears one of the mods think that's an inappropriate word. Even though it's the title of a DW song} at Chez Jay's.   Grin

I think that she actually is on the fade of the song, from ~3:27 on.

C-man has done the definitive work on this.

I have that essay somewhere and can dig it out at some point if C-man doesn't mind.

I was speaking with Craig very recently - initially he said she was on the last 5 seconds of the tag, then a little later he changed his view and gave his opinion that she's not on the single version at all.

Here's a link to what I could find of the "old essay". Thanks for the tip!

That's really interesting. It goes to show you how advanced the song really is, six different segments recorded during 5 separate sessions at 3 studios.

Yeah, but wait. Phil Spector says it's an "edit record," so it's just no good. And Psycho, likewise...an "edit film."

I can't tell you what was recorded where, but after repeated listening, I'm pretty sure I can make out quite a few edits. Unfortunately, it's kind of like hearing the edit in Strawberry Fields Forever. Once you know where the edit is, you can never NOT hear it.

I heard the edit in "SFF" from day one, back in February 1967, on the radio. Never, ever understood why everyone went on about how great it was, how seamless. It's like stubbing your toe on your doorstep in the dark.

If Carol Kaye's not on the released version, is there any way of forensically (by documentary or audio research) pulling apart the recording to find out who did play bass on GV ? There's certainly an upright bass doubling the electric bass part (Lyle Ritz, Ray Pohlman ?), but who was the electric/(Fender)bass player ?

Craig initially told me this:

Verses: Pohlman on Fender, Ritz on Upright...
Choruses: Carl on Fender...
1st & 3rd Bridges: Pohlman on Fender, Pitman on Dano, Bond on Upright...
2nd Bridge (the one with Denny on Organ): Ritz on Upright.
Fade Chorus, if truly from Sunset, is Carol on Fender & Ritz on Upright.

Then, a short while later:

BTW, I've just recently had to somewhat revise what I told you earlier about the bass players on Good Vibrations. Seems it's Ritz playing Fender on the choruses, while Carl plays rhythm guitar. And it's looking like the fade is from a session other than 5/24...a non Carol Kaye session...so she didn't make the final cut at all.

So this is yet another example of something we thought we knew about the Beach Boys proving not to be the case ?
(have just checked www.carolkaye.com and GV is listed as one of the "bass hits" she played on, maybe she's not even aware that her playing isn't on the final cut ?)

CK is also listed on her own site as playing on "Surfin' USA" , "Surf City" and "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena". She didn't: the AFM sheets for these sessions don't list her.

What I think happened here is that, along with other "Crew" members, she played on the many cover versions that sprang up in the wake of the hit originals and over the years has come to assume they were the hits. Hal Blaine claims to have drummed on "Surfin' USA": the AFM sheets says not. As for "GV", there's no disputing that she played on some of the sessions... but according to someone who's studied the track sessions in minute detail, if she's on the released hit single version at all, it might be for 5 seconds of the fade.

Here's the GV track session dates, and CK's involvement (or not):

2/17 - no

4/9 - yes

5/4 - no
5/24 - yes
5/25 - no
5/27 - no

6/2 - (Inspiration) no
6/2 - (Inspiration) no
6/12 - (Inspiration) no
6/16 - no
6/16 - no
6/18 - yes

9/1 - no

I Get Around is another one that Hal, Wikipedia, and nearly every written account credits him as the drummer on, when in fact he's on the session as a percussionist (timbales), but the drums on that track are Dennis.
