The Smile Sessions - A Game of Speculation

The anticipation for
The Smile Sessions
box set is in full swing, and what interests me most is the question of what will be "new." I thought it might be fun to make a game out of it. What's the prize? Bragging rights, that's all.
Start with the list of 30 items below. Answer YES or NO for each one. Each correct answer will win you one point. Then, make a list of up to ten "write-in" items - for each of the items that end up on the box, you will receive two points. One other thing: as soon as the official tracklist is published, no more submissions will be accepted.
Which of the following “new” material will be included on
The Smile Sessions
?
1. Acetate/mix from May 11 session for Heroes and Villains
2. Previously unheard sections from Good Vibrations
3. Wind Chimes mix referred to by Michael Vosse
4. Vocals for Look/I Ran (Oct 13)
5. Wonderful with lead vocal and yodeling bvs
6. Cabin Essence previously unheard instrumental section
7. Cabin Essence “reconnected telephone” vocals
8. Child Is Father Of The Man previously unheard vocals (leads and/or bvs)
9. Child Is Father Of The Man previously unknown lyrics (could be audio, could be just documented lyrics)
10. I’m In Great Shape vocals
11. Significant clues/documentation into the overall structure of I’m In Great Shape
12. Vintage lead vocal for Do You Like Worms
13. An altogether different recording under the title Do You Like Worms
14. Any previously unheard spoken recordings/skits
15. Vintage lead vocal for Barnyard
16. Acetate/mix from fall 1966 version of Heroes and Villains
17. Previously unheard instrumental section from Surf’s Up
18. The Nov 29 recording “Jazz”
19. Previously unheard piece pertaining to the Elements
20. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the air element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
21. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the earth element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
22. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the water element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
23. Vocal parts for Old Master Painter and/or You Are My Sunshine
24. Excerpts from “Ball and Mitt” (Dec 15)
25. Previously unheard section(s) from Heroes and Villains (for bonus points, speculate on specific sections)
26. Acetate/mix from 1967 version of Heroes and Villains
27. Dennis Wilson’s “I Don’t Know”

29. Previously unheard material from Carl’s “Tones”

Yow! What a list! It gives me a headache to read it! I'm one of those who is NOT listening to any SMiLE material until I get the box set, but I'll try to play along here. I think we will definitely hear some mixes from acetates that we've never heard before, so I'll answer "yes" to most of those questions.

No. We have a couple of rough vocal takes from Carl and a demo vocal from Brian. No yodeling BVs, either.

The backing track of Brian's 1966 version w/yodeling BV's is definitely out there and has been booted many times.

Sorry, the way I wrote it is confusing. I'm talking about the 1966 version, with BOTH a lead vocal AND the yodelling backing vocals on the same recording. A proper mix. And not a Frankenstein mix either. I HAVE heard a mix like this, but it was fan-made. Hope that clarifies.

Don't need bragging rights and I'm tired of speculating.
Just give me the Good Vibrations vocal sessions, the CIFTTM vocals, and the Durrie Parks acetates and I'm good to go.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Confession:
I always assumed it was Brian too. I think that I figured it was just Brian when I first heard the song when I wasn't as clear on the vocal distinctions. A few weeks ago though I was listening to it and thought...hang on, that's Carl. Then I checked the vocal list here and it was confirmed.

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Maybe some new bgvs....Doubtful on lead. Hopefully at least the 3 plus minute mix with the chorus vocals on top
9. Child Is Father Of The Man previously unknown lyrics (could be audio, could be just documented lyrics)
Doubt it
10. I’m In Great Shape vocals
Possibly, I really hope so on this one. If they could make the Humble Harv "demo" vocals fit on top that'd be ok too
11. Significant clues/documentation into the overall structure of I’m In Great Shape
Doubtful, although even in '66, didn't "IIGS" contain "I Wanna Be Around" and "Friday Night"? Or am I wrong?
12. Vintage lead vocal for Do You Like Worms
Doubt it, here's hoping, but its not a huge thing to me
13. An altogether different recording under the title Do You Like Worms
Doubt it
14. Any previously unheard spoken recordings/skits
Don't care for any
15. Vintage lead vocal for Barnyard
I'd venture to say the inscription on the vinyl nearly guarantees it. But maybe its a matchup from the Humble Harv "demo"
16. Acetate/mix from fall 1966 version of Heroes and Villains
I really hope so, that would be HUGE. But i'm not convinced we will.
17. Previously unheard instrumental section from Surf’s Up
Doubtful
18. The Nov 29 recording “Jazz”
Maybe, but doubtful
19. Previously unheard piece pertaining to the Elements
Very doubtful
20. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the air element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
Also very doubtful, I'm not sure Brian was ever very sure
21. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the earth element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
Also very doubtful, I'm not sure Brian was ever very sure
22. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the water element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
Also very doubtful, I'm not sure Brian was ever very sure
23. Vocal parts for Old Master Painter and/or You Are My Sunshine
Don't we already have the vox for "YAMS"?
24. Excerpts from “Ball and Mitt” (Dec 15)
Don't know what this is
25. Previously unheard section(s) from Heroes and Villains (for bonus points, speculate on specific sections)
Possibly, although I'm pretty sure we've heard all major sections
26. Acetate/mix from 1967 version of Heroes and Villains
According to Linnett, this sounds very probable
27. Dennis Wilson’s “I Don’t Know”
I hope so
28. Jasper Dailey recording(s)
Hopefully not
29. Previously unheard material from Carl’s “Tones”
Surely hope so
30. Previously unheard material from the April Vega-Tables sessions
Maybe
Write-in item(s):
-Maybe a '66 vintage lead vocal for "Cabin Essence"
-Any vocals from the "Surf's Up" vocal sessions
-How about a "completed" "Surf's Up" using the "solo w/ piano version" vocals? Or are we guaranteed this basically, per Linnett?

I pretty much completely agree with all of sweetdudejim's responses, so I won't copy the whole list again. Basically, I'll be happy with a few new lead/background vocals and maybe a vintage acetate mix or two (any working versions of "Heroes," "Child" or "Cabinessence" especially would be huge finds). Beyond that though, I'm not expecting any of the monumental discoveries that we've all been longing to hear all these years - i.e. a finished "Elements," "Surf's Up" 2nd movement, etc.
It's definitely best to keep expectations reasonably in check here - if nothing else, it'll make the surprises that much more pleasant!

1. Acetate/mix from May 11 session for Heroes and Villains
Not sure what this is, so No
2. Previously unheard sections from Good Vibrations
No - I reckon we've heard as much of this as there is on UM vol 15
3. Wind Chimes mix referred to by Michael Vosse
No, although would dearly love to hear this. Often wondered if he's referring to mix from UM 16 with the brief vocal drop outs?
4. Vocals for Look/I Ran (Oct 13)
No
5. Wonderful with lead vocal and yodeling bvs
Yes
6. Cabin Essence previously unheard instrumental section
7. Cabin Essence “reconnected telephone” vocals
Yes. AGD has made a couple of posts where he asks: "How do we know it wasn't recorded?" Might be reading too much into it but I'm going to venture that he knows something we don't!
8. Child Is Father Of The Man previously unheard vocals (leads and/or bvs)
No, although I wish
9. Child Is Father Of The Man previously unknown lyrics (could be audio, could be just documented lyrics)
No
10. I’m In Great Shape vocals
No
11. Significant clues/documentation into the overall structure of I’m In Great Shape
No
12. Vintage lead vocal for Do You Like Worms
No. I'm sure this would've been unearthed for ref for BWPS if it existed
13. An altogether different recording under the title Do You Like Worms
No
14. Any previously unheard spoken recordings/skits
Please no
15. Vintage lead vocal for Barnyard
Yes. Tend to agree with SweetdudeJim that the acetate may imply a discovery here. If not PLEASE don't fly the Humble Harv vocals in!
16. Acetate/mix from fall 1966 version of Heroes and Villains
Yes. I don't believe it, but might as well dream on this one!
17. Previously unheard instrumental section from Surf’s Up
No way
18. The Nov 29 recording “Jazz”
No, although it is in the vault apparently. I doubt they'll use space up with it.
19. Previously unheard piece pertaining to the Elements
No
20. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the air element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
No
21. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the earth element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
No
22. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the water element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be)
No
23. Vocal parts for Old Master Painter and/or
You Are My Sunshine We already have the Barnshine with vocals so does that count? As it isn't new, I'll say No
24. Excerpts from “Ball and Mitt” (Dec 15)
No. What is this?
25. Previously unheard section(s) from Heroes and Villains (for bonus points, speculate on specific sections)
Yes - Barnyard tag with vocals!!
26. Acetate/mix from 1967 version of Heroes and Villains
27. Dennis Wilson’s “I Don’t Know”
No. Again, unfamiliar with this.
28. Jasper Dailey recording(s)
No
29. Previously unheard material from Carl’s “Tones”
No
30. Previously unheard material from the April Vega-Tables sessions
No
Write-in item(s):
Surf's Up backing track + with Brian's demo vocals flown in!
On the subject of what will be new, let's not forget Adamghost's tantalizing post from a few weeks back:
Quote from: adamghost on March 22, 2011, 11:11:36 PM
Of what was told to me, one thing in particular that he said they had just discovered raised an eyebrow and made me go "whoa, really?"
My take on it, based on the minimal information I was told, was that there will be some cool unheard material, but people should also keep their hopes in check, because some of the "holy grail" material just isn't there to be found. Also keep in mind that Alan and Mark don't have the final say on what gets released. But you know those guys will do the best they can, and we should all thank them for their efforts.
I think we'll get one groovy 'new piece' and I predict this will be either a new addition to Cabinessence or Barnyard with vocals, or if I'm right out on a limb, an alternate edit of Heroes.

5. Wonderful with lead vocal and yodeling bvs (OKAY, I'M CONFUSED, DON'T WE HAVE THIS ALREADY?)
No. We have a couple of rough vocal takes from Carl and a demo vocal from Brian. No yodeling BVs, either.
The backing track of Brian's 1966 version w/yodeling BV's is definitely out there and has been booted many times.
Sorry, misread the BV's bit.

I bet we'll get Brian piano demos for other SMiLE tracks, possibly Cabinessence, Wonderful, and a solo H&V.
I'd seriously have a heart attack if we got that. That's my dream coming true. A Brian Wilson Cabinessence piano demo, or Wind Chimes, or Child is father of the man, or Good Vibrations, or Look.

I've made more detailed comments about each item on this list in the separate thread 'Catbirdman's List: Questions, Answers, Speculation'. But here are my one-word answers.
Which of the following “new” material will be included on The Smile Sessions?
1. Acetate/mix from May 11 session for Heroes and Villains: NO
2. Previously unheard sections from Good Vibrations: NO (unless it's a vocal-only mix)
3. Wind Chimes mix referred to by Michael Vosse: NO (I think we've heard it already, though possibly in a different mix that doesn't accentuate the pianos in the way he described)
4. Vocals for Look/I Ran (Oct 13): NO
5. Wonderful with lead vocal and yodeling bvs: YES (because today, it would be easy to create that composite mix)
6. Cabin Essence previously unheard instrumental section: NO
7. Cabin Essence “reconnected telephone” vocals: NO (other than as a print of an original lyric sheet: that might happen, maybe)
8. Child Is Father Of The Man previously unheard vocals (leads and/or bvs): NO
9. Child Is Father Of The Man previously unknown lyrics (could be audio, could be just documented lyrics): YES (printed or hand-written lyrics only, though, I reckon, at best)
10. I’m In Great Shape vocals: NO
11. Significant clues/documentation into the overall structure of I’m In Great Shape: NO
12. Vintage lead vocal for Do You Like Worms: NO
13. An altogether different recording under the title Do You Like Worms: NO
14. Any previously unheard spoken recordings/skits: NO
15. Vintage lead vocal for Barnyard: YES
16. Acetate/mix from fall 1966 version of Heroes and Villains: NO
17. Previously unheard instrumental section from Surf’s Up: NO
18. The Nov 29 recording “Jazz”: YES (but I bet it isn't SMiLE-related)
19. Previously unheard piece pertaining to the Elements: NO
20. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the air element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be): I'll go out on a limb here and say YES, and furthermore, speculate that it's the 'tuned percussion' versions of what we knew as 'H&V Intro' on the GV box set. Because… er… oh, look, I REALLY don't know, OK? But… they've got whistles in. Apart from that… I got nothing, I tells ya!
21. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the earth element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be): YES. And I think it was Vega-Tables. (see the other Catbirdman speculation thread for more on why I think this).
22. Significant new clues/documentation into what comprised the water element (for bonus point, speculate on specifics of what that element turns out to be): YES (and I think it was the Water chant, with nothing else attached. Certainly NOT what we got titled 'I Love To Say Dada' on the '93 GV box set).
23. Vocal parts for Old Master Painter and/or You Are My Sunshine: YES. Dennis's YAMS vocal exists, so we'll get that, at least. Hopefully in better quality than we have it at the moment.
24. Excerpts from “Ball and Mitt” (Dec 15): NO (but only because I have NO IDEA what this is…!)
25. Previously unheard section(s) from Heroes and Villains (for bonus points, speculate on specific sections): Oh, what the hey, YES. I'll go for a bar brawl.
26. Acetate/mix from 1967 version of Heroes and Villains: YES. Probably just the Feb '67 cantina version, though.
27. Dennis Wilson’s “I Don’t Know”: YES
28. Jasper Dailey recording(s): YES (though they are allegedly excruciating)
29. Previously unheard material from Carl’s “Tones”: YES
30. Previously unheard material from the April Vega-Tables sessions: YES
Write-in item(s):
SMiLE versions of With Me Tonight, plus session documentation to prove that they date from SMiLE sessions, not Smiley Smile ones.
'66-7-vintage edits or trial mixes of:
(a Vega-Tables
and
(b Wind Chimes
(c I Wanna Be Around/Workshop
which tell us more about how THOSE tracks might have been structured. For more on why I think that's so hard to figure out, see the 'Catbirdman's List: Questions, Answers, Speculation' thread.

Maybe this is the appropriate thread to note that in re-reading Dominic Priore's
THE STORY OF SMILE
, I was reminded that the author claims there exists a fully-produced version of "Surf's Up" completed in January of '67 that has never been released.
Very unlikely, of course. But then this was stated in a book that both Brian and Van Dyke wrote forewords for.

Good point, Roger - I had completely forgotten that too, despite having also read that book!
As I said elsewhere on this board today, I seem to recall that it was Domenic P that claimed to have heard the missing Part 2 of Surf's Up on a message board years ago... it feels as though it was the late 90s to me. But no-one knew if it was really Dom for sure. Or indeed, whether what he said was true!

I thought Dom said he KNEW someone who had heard Surf's Up Pt 2 but it never materialized.
And Biran did produce a completed version of Surf's Up - the piano/doubletracked vocal one in December. Whether he planned to do more with it we don't know.
