Not true. At least not according to Van Dyke. He simply wrote two sets -- one for the TLOS album, and a revised set for The Arctic Tale movie.

Right. Van Dyke's name is on the credits for the TLOS version.

Ok, so I have the 2CD (It's amazing, the poster, WOW), Box is on the way from Amazon and I'll pick up the single CD and Vinyl on Monday.
So excited, was going to do an unboxing but the ESQ dude did a great one so another is not really needed.

lyrics are credited to Brian Wilson. I always thought Van Dyke Parks wrote those lyrics.

As far as Van Dyke's non involvement in the set and promotion, could it be a money thing, like the Frank Holmes situation with BWPS? Like maybe he wanted some some kind of consultation consideration and they couldn't come to terms. Other than that maybe he feels like he's already gone through all this fairly recently, and closed the book on it.
Van Dyke is an excellent poet and musician; he first came to my attention way back in the '60's when he played on some records by Mason Williams and Biff Rose.
I wonder if the so-called "non-involvement" is more just him wanting a low profile, and also maybe VD wants to let Brian and The Boys (the glorious Boys) to have the spotlight this time.
Either way, Van Dyke is a class act.

Without doubt. I think proof of this, is that we're considering that the reason he's missing is out of respect for the band. If it were someone else we'd jump to the money conclusion, but there are some gentlemen left alive, Van Dyke's certainly one of them.

I really, really enjoy listening to the cd's, reading the book, playing the vinyl etc. This weekend I'll be doing nothing else.
Another thing I noticed is that the TOMP vocal part seems to be edited in the track: the vocal starts a bit later than in the bootleg vocal mono mix and the sound of the tracks changes a bit. Does this mean they only found a mono mix, maybe an acetate with the lead vocal?

Got the 2CD set. Amazing. Few comments though:
Don't think IIGS or Barnyard works very well - still prefer the piano demo.
I think Surf's Up 67 is
extremely
overrated/overhyped. It's nice and all, but only because it's a newly discovered version of the song - I mean, the concept of that. Nice little key change in the end there, but beyond that, meh.

Okay, I know the reason, and I'll tell you.
You know those "Do not remove under penalty of law" tags you see on furniture?? Well...take those things seriously. Van Dyke got really mad one day after he spilled some Diet Pepsi on his divan....he got so mad that he took a knife...and cut that tag off. Next thing he knew, the police surrounded his house.
I'll leave out the gory details, but he was released after the deadline for submission to
The Smile Sessions
.
At least that's what someone told me.
