I take this to mean that VDP, once cornered by Mike and challenged over lyrics, proceeded to let one rip bigtime as a clever diversion, and/or means to escape, to wit:
ML: Explain this..."Over and over, the crow cries uncover the cornfield?"
VDP: Brrrrraaaaaaaappppppp... Ding Witty Pearl, Mikey! Got to split. Bye!

Fire soft lamplight,
Cabin Essence in peacetime,
Welcomes the time change.
Who ran the iron horse?
I want to see you windblown facing
Embracing waves of your wheat.
Folks sing a song of the estate.
Nestle kiss underneath.
Tide stars there.
And witness our home on the range.
Who ran the iron horse?
Truck driving man do what you can
High-tail your load off
Of nightlife, this gas man
I do not believe that I should mourn
In luck
With money and stand
Grabs the truth
In the past the vast, the last breath
Land, dust, trust that you have
Catch as catch can
Have you seen the great voice work on the railroad?
Again and again
The crow cries uncover the cornfield.
Again and again
Thresher and hover in a wheat field ..

Also I'm sure if Van Dyke asked Mike would have explained what "hang ten" meant
"Hey Mike what does 'hang ten' mean?"
"Gosh, it is awful tedious to have to explain yourself over and over again Van Dyke. I don't think I can work under these conditions"

Oops. I just can't stop it. Here are the "lyrics" to "Surf Is Up":
Diamond necklace played the soldier.
Holding hands, drummed along to a few
The manners of the staff.
Noble blinds.
Through the glass appears as follows: Rear op'ra
Pit and the pendulum will continue.
Column format ruins domino!
Cloth or brush-back town and release.
Do you sleep?
Velvet over taking me off.
Dim chandelier awaken me.
Dissolved in the dawn song.
Music Hall - arc expensive.
Music is all over now
To mute swan trumpet player.
Column format ruins domino!
Cloth or brush-back town and release.
Do you sleep? Brother John?
Pigeons to nest tower -
As it strikes, mercury was a full moon.
Fog - The second phase transport
Underground light melodies.
Laughs come hard
In the light of fireflies.
The glass shade, raised a shot.
A complete wine.
Dim last toasting.
Port, in peace or die.
, Sadness, choking eyes hardened heart
Beyond belief, a broken man to cry too tough.
Surf is up! Riding a tsunami.
Please join a hard young
You often go to bed and gave.
I heard the word. Be great! Children's songs.
In the nursery, rhymes - to play they are listening to? (Children - children, fathers of children -. children, the father of men)
Their song is love the way the children know. (Children - children, fathers of children -. children, the father of men)

That's poetry, and poetry doesn't need to be explain.
It brings images in your mind and words don't need to be write in the usual way to form a phrase;
especially abstract poetry. Franck Holmes expressed the best way to visualize the music.
On 'Cabine Essence', if you listen to the instrumental part and close your eyes you can see the home on the range,
the coolies working on the railroad, your can hear the train rolling... both music and lyrics are very expressive.
In 'H&V', you can hear the gold miners shaking their sieves... I never understood the debate about how the lyrics were weird.

I got this from a Wikipedia entry about Mike Love and Smile (of course I translated it into Spanish and then back to English via Google):
Love is said to be opposed oblique lyrics Van Dyke Parks' to smile, reserving particular scorn for the song "Cabinessence." During a heated discussion at a recording session, love demands that Parks explain the meaning of the song Parks objected and went, leading to Love officially end his association with Wilson. Although love supposedly had nothing personal against the wind, apparently feared that the letters were too abstract to a record of the Beach Boys.
Love later stated that he suspected the new friends that Brian is associated, and that their opposition to these people was another major source of conflict. Love has suggested that some of those who have been critical of him did so because he had told them that "a walk".
Aversion denied love Pet Sounds, also says he liked the music and smile just liked the letter. However, this is strongly disputed by several participants, including Van Dyke Parks. Respond to the love of the statements in a letter to the editor of UK music magazine Mojo, Parks was highly critical comments of love - which he described as "revisionism" - and he was very clear in citing the hostility of love smile as one of the main factors of Brian decision to abandon the project. In the DVD that accompanies the launch of smiles, 2004, Brian also asserts itself as the antagonism of love was one of the main factors to decide the cancellation of the album:
"The reasons why they did not release Smile: One, Mike did not like ...".
Love letters contributed to his 1966 single "Good Vibrations," though the song also has a previous set of letters written by the principal contributor to Wilson Pet Sounds, Tony Asher, Wilson Smile restored version in 2004.
Writing for The Guardian in December 1999, Hodgkinson summary of the main reasons for the disappearance of the proposed Wilson:
"A combination of factors, including litigation against the record company and the growing animosity between Wilson and the rest of the band, made May 1967 Wilson pulled the plug on the record ... [Mike] Love had already rejected" Good Vibrations "and" avant-garde crap "and opposed to the way Wilson, parks and a highly skilled group of musicians were creating music beyond his understanding ... in March 1967, feeling bad Parks has too much and not having the desire to break the Beach Boys, it was. "

Still on according the press release on BW"s website regarding last night's Mojo award (full text at
www.brianwilson.com/news/press_07-22-11.html
):
"Also forthcoming will be The Beach Boys’ legendary ‘SMiLE’ Album Sessions. This never-Before-Released Original 1966-’67 Album Sessions Compiled for 2CD and Digital Packages and Deluxe, Limited Edition Box Set will be released
later this year
.
"Between the summer of 1966 and early 1967, The Beach Boys recorded, in several sessions, a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, SMiLE, that was intended to follow the band’s 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds. The sessions were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys’ SMiLE has never been released. With the full participation of original Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson, Capitol/EMI has collected and compiled the definitive collection, ‘The SMiLE Sessions,’ for worldwide release this year in multiple physical and digital configurations."
The word "summer" in relation to the release date is perhaps now notable by its absence…

I've pointed this out a few times, but it doesn't seem to stick: Capitol has never -- NEVER! -- officially said "Summer"; that seasonal promise was only made by people not authorized or informed enough to make such promises. Here's what the Billboard article says:
Quote
Capitol Records is planning to release the Beach Boys' great lost album, "Smile,"
later this year
. ...
"The Smile Sessions" doesn't yet have a specific release date, with Capitol saying only that it will arrive later this year.
And here's what the Capitol press release -- the ONLY official word so far -- says:
Quote
With the full participation of original Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson, Capitol/EMI has collected and compiled the definitive collection, ‘The SMiLE Sessions,’ for
worldwide release this year
in multiple physical and digital configurations. ... The SMiLE Sessions’ global release date, complete track lists, and artwork will be unveiled soon.
All speculations about "Summer" -- by Al Jardine, Van Dyke Parks, and others -- were just that: speculation. The July and August release dates posted by Direct Curren Music were from internal Capitol documents, and not meant for the public -- mainly because they were tentative and change all the time.
So, no, the word "Summer" is not conspicuous in its absence -- it's been absent all along! In fact, it looks like they lifted this recent verbiage straight from the March press release! Be patient. August is almost here ... every day we don't get news is a day closer to when we DO get news.

Here's some more positivity: We've been waiting for some kind of assurance that the SMiLE project is still on track, right? A promise that we aren't being tricked, that all will be well, that it won't be 1988 or 1997 all over again, right? Well, by quoting its own March press release in this new July press release (for Brian's MOJO award), Capitol (or Brian, or whoever -- but SOMEONE official) has done just that -- they've re-affirmed that "The Smile Sessions" is still happening, it's still coming "later this year", and there's nothing to worry about, baby. It may not be the press release we were hoping for in late July, but it ain't nothing. Indeed, if this press release had come out and there was NO mention of the upcoming SMiLE project, we'd all be in a tizzy right now.

Sean is right. I was just thinking earlier today what a great time this really is. All the evidence is suggesting that Smile is due very soon. The wait might be agonising but we'll get more definitive info within the next 2 months I'd imagine, and think how exciting it will be when we have a tracklist to chew over. Not too much longer to wait.
No info in the latest Mojo as far as I can see though, although haven't had a chance to scour it yet.

Mojo carries a lineage ad for Spin Compact Discs in the back pages which states:
"Beach Boys – Smile (limited cd/vinyl/dvd box)……………£Phone!"
The DVD element of the content is news to me, though they might be jumping the gun.
Uncut not far away and it did hold promise of editorial.
You're right about it being a good time - there's the re-issue of Postcards with bonus tracks, plus BW's Disney album, which might both appear before TSS. And I suspect other material in the pipes too. Just a hunch… but I doubt the SMiLE package will sate the man in the street when it comes to marking the 50th anniversary.

It occurred to me that everyone's under the assumption that the definitive tracklist will be released prior to the product getting released. I haven't followed the release of a new box set in ages, so i'm out of the loop. Is this really that absolutely certain? Is there any possibility that there might be some secrecy regarding the contents of this box set? Remember when new stuff would come out and you didn't know
anything
about it before it came out?

Both the artwork and the track list will undoubtedly be revealed before the release date

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Uncut not far away and it did hold promise of editorial.
I'd love to be wrong about this, but I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that the new Uncut contains nothing of significance related to Smile. They were probably anticipating review copies in advance of an August release.

sh*t you & me too although I'd love to hold out and hear this thing for the fist time on my cd player. Ain't going to happen alas.
If I wasn't a regular here, waiting for the official release might be feasible but to keep it as a surprise would also mean abstaining from smileysmile.net for the month or so between leak and official release which would call for superhuman levels of self restraint.
Ed!t: Hell, I'm going to do it. I think the moment the leak posts begin I will step away and wait for the official release. I blew so many christmas and birthday surprises from rooting through my parents' wardrobe, I owe it to myself! Also weeks of downer posts about Mark mismatching the speed or pitch on song x before the Smile Sessions even hit the shelves will depress the hell out of me.
