Steve Hoffman claims he knows the release date and it isn't August 9th.

This could be another one of Steve's brilliant insights that just happen to turn into Steve saying "I was told to say that,"....remember this:

"But you people put the project in serious jeopardy. Next time should I just say nothing and let you sink it?"

You don't announce the most anticipated box set of all time months in advance and give the fans no idea when it's going to be released.

Damn Al Jardine.

Isn't EMI in financial trouble? This could be a tactic to improve 3rd quarter revenue.

Yeppers, that be him. So, if September does turn out to be the month of release, Capitol probably will not release a date until July. At least my wife will have something to buy me for my birthday.

My birthday's oct 1st so I had a similar thought that a september release could be good, then I remembered what a tyrant my girlfriend is about me not opening presents until the actual day. Fine if it's released sept 30th, but any earlier would be agony, unless it's a whole month before and I can just buy it myself. Wow never thought I would have such deliberations about a Smile release ...

Indeed. But like I've said, purely from a logistical standpoint, August 9th (although more credible than July 12th) is still a bit optimistic.  You don't need an inside track to figure than one out.

Just read the updated SMILE info on Wiki:

Future Release
On February 3rd, 2011, Alan Jardine spoke to Examiner.com to inform them that "Capitol Records plans to issue a Beach Boys version of Smile sometime this summer to begin the celebration of The Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary. Smile is the Holy Grail for Beach Boys’ fans, so it will be good." Jardine also mentions that The Beach Boys "didn't do any new recording. I'm happy to see it finally come out. Brian’s changed his mind about releasing the material, but it was inevitable, wasn’t it?"
After these reports speculation concerning an official release of Smile started mounting in fan circuits, only to be confirmed on March 11 by Capitol Records that an official release would emerge sometime during 2011. It was also reported that the record would feature a main track list in mono (as was other contemporary Beach Boys records of the time), but also include recording segments in stereo. The album is scheduled to be released in a 2-CD package under the title The Smile Sessions. A limited edition of vinyl releases including a 65 page booklet is also forecast.

Okay, anyone want to hold up their hands to this?

Anyone ever seen a 65-page publication of any kind?   Grin

Too close for comfort. We've been fooled bigtime. Instead of that Smile Sessions Monster, we'll be treated to the 'Beach Boys Christmas Bonanza', in essence being a super-expanded version of the never-released Xmas project recorded at MIU. 6 CDs, 4 LPs, and 12 singles. And, of course, the 1970 Christmas Concert Program, re-worked and slightly expanded by Michael Love.

And this is the 'immersion version', if you know what I mean and I think you do.

Don't forget who told you first.

I heard they might have already commissioned Frank Holmes to design cover artwork for this deluxe Christmas package, featuring images of a sun-tanned Santa Claus wearing a Hawaiian shirt and carrying a surfboard trimmed with garland. Wearing Ray-Bans, of course.

Mike Love figured if Frank Holmes did Smile, let's give him a go at this one. Brian and Al cast two "what the hell" yes votes in favor.

Record Store Day
Friday the 13th, people. We can think of nothing better to ward off superstitions and bad luck than some Good Vibrations in a room full of beach toys. (Plus, some of us on the RSD crew may have gotten a look at the upcoming SMILE box set this week. Oh, Brian Wilson!)

Not exactly sure what this means... Maybe they got a look at the packaging?   It's unlikely that the contents are finalized if VDP is talking about an upcoming meeting with the engineer (Mark Linett, presumably).

Certainly curious.

I wonder who still needs to sign off on this before we can get a release date/tracklist? Let's hope VDP is the last signature they need then we're all set ...

I don't think VDP needs to sign anything off: that was all taken care of back in 1966.

Just to speculate a bit more on what this means...

It IS plausible that Capitol would give the Record Store Day team a sneak peek, as the RSD GV/H&V 78 was part of Capitol's promotional effort for the Smile box in multiple ways:  the 'SMiLE coming soon' insert, the Barnyard inscription, the font on the cover,  and, of course, the songs themselves.

The big question is what have they seen?  Or heard?  I doubt that they'll spill the beans, but at least this would seem to be a good omen that maybe, just maybe, a 2nd official announcement (i.e., with release date, track lists, packaging photos, etc.) will be coming soon.

What confuses me is the "may have gotten a look" part. Either they did or they didn't. Which is it? If they didn't know for sure, then why even mention it.

"the Record Store Day People" ?!?  Who would that be?  the guys in Capittol's warehouse that box up the records?
It's not as if there was any big promotional push by sales reps in the stores; and no posters, or other materials was made, as far as I can tell, so who are these secret people supposed to be?
