Always wanted to know but what happened to Brian between 1991-95?, I've guessed that he was freed from Dr Landy as we all know thank God, And started to repair his old family and friends relationships that was almost destroyed during the Landy era, and also he met his future wife too or was that before and Landy stopped it??. He also got quite big again towards 95 was this a reaction to pills he was taking?, or simply was eating too much?. I guess after Brian had only just come thorugh the Landy era in the nick of time Brian spent the next few years or so taking stock and repairing the damage that the Landy era did to his life.

He'd met Melinda during the Landy era, I believe - He bought a car off her. Asked her out on a date soon after Landy was gone.
He did work on Paley tracks starting about then, too, calling Paley up not long after Landy was dismissed.

He also started smoking again, and the weight gain might have something to do with a personal freedom to just eat steak as he pleased again. Although I believe he was under UCLA care immediately, and the medications were still being tested to find what suited him - the most telling way this manifests itself is in his voice. Just compare him in I Just Wasn't Made For These Times and 'On Tour' - the difference is astonishing.

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.
What is this "life" thing you speak of ?

Thanks for that hypehat, But in what way was the voice difference in IJWMFTT and "On Tour"?? Better or worse?. When I saw Brian peforming Smile in 2004 in London a couple of times Brian surpised us all, But one memory that always sticks in my mind is Brian singing "Sail On Sailor" and when the song ended Brian sung again on his own the line "Sail on, Sail on Sailor" perfectly as if to say to everyone and himself I can get this right which he did!!. We all give him a standing ovation one of many that night  Grin

If you hear Brian in 1991-95 (during the bulk of the Paley sessions, IJWMFTT, and OCA), he sounds more...reedy. When he quit smoking his voice seemed to get a little bit of its "old sound" back, but that was about it. He's certainly been singing better as of 2009, when I last saw him live (and it was the best I had ever seen him). Compare Brian from 1999 to Brian in 2002, then in 2004, then in 2007, then in 2009. It's a clear upward run as far as his vocals are concerned. When I saw him in 2009 he was utterly amazing, and not just vocally. He was like the Brian that Andrew Doe described to us, the one that "when he's in his right element, he's achingly funny". And that was VERY true.

I would think that voice lessons have had a lot to do with the improvement of his voice over the last decade or so, but even so, it's no less astonishing.  Hearing an almost 70-year-old Brian sing a lead like "The Like In I Love You" blew my mind.  I'm not sure he could have pulled that off as well 10 years ago.  He's singing better than a lot of his somewhat younger contemporaries these days (Elton John, for example - yikes).
