3rd band, first U.S group, some legends ahead of them.
I'm ok with that list.
i can't believe james brown & aretha franklin are ahead of them? wth!
Seconded. Who listens to James Brown or Aretha Franklin?
I hope this isn't serious.

I wonder where Frank Zappa was on the list? Probably bubbling around the #70 mark I bet.
Anything that lists The Beatles #1 other than most overrated band of all time (I say this as a fan btw) is meaningless in my eyes.
Dare I ask where Nirvana came in? If it's anywhere in the top 10 I think I'm going to throw up.

Seconded; if so, this ranks easily as one of the dumbest things ever posted here (and there's STIFF competition).

More white people listen to Areatha and James than black people listen to the Beach Boys.

Newguy-Take a listen to Steeley Dan's "Hey Nineteen" from the 'Aja" album. They sing about "the queen of soul" and it's a great song.
is it on youtube?

Well, no offense meant here but I was born in '95 and I act around ten times more mature than you do on this board...and I feel as though I'm at least, to some degree, respected by the members here. I lurked for a while before I started posting, and I think I have intelligent things to say. Newguy, just maybe you should be more careful as to what you say and how you say it for sake of being looked on with respect. Just my two cents

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Regarding James Brown/Aretha Franklin/Beach Boys: I'd personally put The Beach Boys ahead of either of those two artists not meaning to take anything away from either as the importance of James Brown and Aretha Franklin in music can't be denied. That being said I think that despite all of their success, the music of The Beach Boys isn't as accessible as a lot of their contemporaries. There are a lot of people out there who don't dig harmony for instance or the fact that The Beach Boys tended to lean more towards pop than rock and roll. With the exception of Marley and Hendrix the music of the acts that polled higher than The Beach Boys are generally more accessible than The Beach Boys in my opinion.

I think most of us on this board would have the BBs higher, as would I. But from the masses, 12 is pretty good. 10 years ago, they probably would've been around 25 or 30 on the list. Perhaps the SMiLE box boost them up a bit.

I'm not surprised they only put them at #12, although I'm a little surprised they put them THAT high. If I asked people I know to name the 12 greatest artists of all time, I doubt they'd name the Beach Boys. So I'm surprised to see them get the respect they deserve. I think they should be higher, but it doesnt' surprise me others aren't into it.

Hmmm. Well, Brian had been touring SMiLE by that time
This summer the BBs stock should be pretty high. Unless they screw it up.

Hey NewGuy,
Gram Parsons covered an Aretha Franklin song ("Do Right Woman") on the first Flying Burrito Brothers album The GIlded Palace of Sin. Gram was a big fan of Aretha!
By the way, it a great cover!
