1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce in Hannover June 18 on: June 17, 2019, 02:43:02 PM
Hey, if a band performs Beach Boys songs whithin 10 minutes walking distance from my home, I go - no matter how many actual Beach Boys are on stage, even if there aren't any at all.

Let us know how it was.

Not on this board, no. Took a peek in a few threads and found: what made me leave and still makes me want to puke is still the essence of this board, an agenda that spoiled all the fun this board once provided for me. I can't stand this hate. Probably my last post on here unless, say, Brian performs in this town which is unlikely to happen.

Anybody else going? Would love to catch up.

Or was the arrangement ideas of the Veges bridge just recycled into With Me Tonight?  (just like the DYLW/Bicycle Rider piano bit *and* the vocal arrangement of the Vege-Tables Fade was recycled into an interlude for Wonderful)

That's another possibility. Doesn't explain the master number, though. Still possible.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What is your Smile Track Listing? on: August 01, 2016, 11:36:21 AM
Thank you! Smiley Really, you think so? What is so genius in my list compared to the others' in your opinion?

BTW, my H&V mix ends with OMP/MOS/fade with MOS lyrics. The only famous SMiLE part I left out is IWBA/Workshop. Didn't fit anywhere, and suprisingly I don't miss it.

I'm very glad to see someone else putting together Worms and Cabin Essence. To me, I can't imagine that it was ever possible that they were meant to be apart.

Me too, I just heretically put CE before DYLW, as CE ends on a Cmin7 chord, and DYLW begins with its resolution F. Actually edited it right into the fade.

BTW, if you're interested, this is the version of Vega-Tables I cooked up as part of The Elements.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The initial structure of Heroes and Villains on: August 01, 2016, 10:46:48 AM
I assume there never was a H&V planned to be streched over both sides of a single... yet there may have been plans for a track called "Heroes And Villains part 2", as there has been a precedent to that: "Shut Down part 2". There is no "Shut Down part 1" - there's only "Shut Down" proper and that instrumental piece which is not supposed to be a continuation of "Shut Down". So I could imagine a single that has the whole and complete H&V on side A... and some goofing around called "Heroes And Villains part 2" as the B-side, and only on that B-side, not to be included on the SMiLE album.

And also With Me Tonight is logged as master # #57450, so it must be a part of Vege-Tables?

Well, actually... there's this little piece on the Hawthorne CD that has the original Vega-Tables bass line with "With me tonight" sung over it, so indeed, yes, at one moment in time With Me Tonight was intended to be a section of Vega-Tables.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What is your Smile Track Listing? on: July 13, 2016, 09:11:08 AM

Mine is:

"You are Welcome" as opener (I see a lot of you guys use it at the end, it's shocking to me because after all, it's a welcome song Grin Plus it begins with a great fade-in).

Plus it is in the same key as H&V, while Prayer is not.

My personal opinion is that while Prayer is a perfect opener for an album named "Dumb Angel", it sucks as an opener for an album named "SMiLE" with that cover. It is way too majestic and minor-key.

Is there any real evidence that Surf's Up was intended to be the closing track?

I don't think so but due to its sound and its content, I'm not sure what could possibly follow it while having it sound right.

Likewise, Surf's Up is not a good closer for an album named SMiLE. Here's my 12 track listing:

A.
1. You're Welcome
2. H&V
3. Cabin Essence
4. DYLW
5. On A Holiday
6. Wonderful
7. Song For Children

B.
1. CIFOTM
2. The Elements (V-T - LTSDD - Wind Chimes - MOLC)
3. Surf's Up
4. Prayer
5. Good Vibrations

By sheer coincidence, these two sides with my own edits clock in nearly the same length, just over 22:40 min each, thuns the whole album just over 45 minutes, still shorter than "Aftermath". Another neat thing is that side A ends with the melody that is reprised in GV which ends side B.

Im toying with the idea to change side B to:

1. CIFOTM
2. Surf's Up
3. The Elements (MOLC - Wind Chimes - LTSDD - V-T)
4. Prayer
5. Good Vibrations

That would leave the 2nd movement of BWPS intact - you would just have to flip the disc in the middle of the movement.

The Durrie Parks acetate, presumably from December, has the "My children were raised . . . often wise" instrumental backing in it after the new Great Shape section.  Not a verse backing repeat.

So what backing is that? The "alternate version" has little to no backing on the first half Of the children verse. Or is it a harpsichord backing like on the released version?

The point is, that lyric may likely have originally been a third verse, and at some point - lacking surviving mixes, impossible to know when exactly - Brian chose to use a different backing for that third verse lyric. Later on, he chose to ditch the second half of that lyric altogether.

Hace you actually heard the Durrie Parks acetate or just read about it?

Micha, you genius!

I've heard that before! Grin

Seriously, I thought it's rather obvious.
10  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: The Right to Keep and Bear Arms: The Gun Thread on: June 13, 2016, 03:36:11 PM
Would Christina Grimmie still be alive if her murderer couldn't have gotten guns so easily?

Did her brother who overwhelmed the attacker carry a gun?
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Scott Bennett discussion thread on: June 13, 2016, 03:32:45 PM
The other day I was thinking, is it possible the woman was not knocked out by the amount of alcohol she drank but because someone put something in her drink? That would be an explanation for the total memory loss and Scott thinking he was "just" dealing with a drunk woman that may be interested in having sex, and misjudging things when the effect of that other chemical kicked in so she couldn't defend herself any more.

Which would still be appallingly cheating on his wife, anyway.
12  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Thread for arguments with or about moderation on: May 27, 2016, 08:51:48 AM
Not much to add in this thread, just have to point out that Billy is such a great guy that people actually donate to help him in need. That says so much of Billy's general attitude towards people. Everybody wants him to stay.

Is it a witch hunt against GF? What is the definition of "witch hunt"? Unlike Billy, GF's attitude towards people who disagree with him is, in fact, improvable. Would the SS board a better place if he wasn't a moderator? Considering how things are at other places of the net at this point, very likely not. People who feel intimidated by GF would be more at ease, but the general tone on the board wouldn't change a bit.
13  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Lifetime ban on AGD on: May 06, 2016, 07:46:14 AM
If AGD did what the mods say, and when Billy says he saw the evidence I'm 100% sure he really did see it, unfortunately banning him was the only thing the mods could do. Unfortunately, because I still think that in the on-board arguments his point of view was usually the sane one. I was often put off by his unnecessary derogative behavior, including insults, against posters who hadn't thought through what they posted or were simply less informed about a minor issue, and I wish he hadn't behaved that way, but it seems to have been a glimpse of AGD's darker side. I haven't received any of those defamatory PMs, but heard about one incident when a poster received a PM from AGD that said poster found inappropriate, so unless somebody hacked AGD's account and sent those PMs plotting to have him banned, which I find quite unlikely, it was right to ban him.

Still, with AGD gone it's one more reason for me to not frequent this board as often as I used to, as it had turned slowly to a turn-every-thread-into-a-Mike-Love-hate-fest board long before Andrew's now forced departure. It's impossible to discuss any issue in a well-balanced way, the usual suspects always step in and sh*t on it. I can't bear all that hate displayed here.

So, with my own point of view on the wrong side of the general consensus I won't of be of much use posting here, and vice versa, reading the board. I'll try to keep up with what the sane and informed people like Ian, Jon, c-man, and Desper contribute, and maybe post before journeys of mine to try to see balanced minded BB fans in other parts of the world.

That last paragraph had nothing to do with AGD's banning, just ignore it if it bores you. But thanks to the mods anyway for opening up this thread again so I could state my 2 cents on the matter.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Book released October 11th on: April 09, 2016, 09:59:20 AM
Maybe after seeing how Brian went downhill after the first sacking of Landy, the boys weren't sure if removing Landy would again be fatal. And their relationship was probably not close enough to see Landy's wrongs.

I guess each of us have our pet BB fan peeve. Some it's the Mike Love hate. Some it's the Mike Love Love. me, it's the justifications for Brian Wilson to have been treated like he was by his family and Landy. There was no justification. Brian Wilson didn't need it. He didn't deserve it. He isn't unlike other humans and he didn't need special, illegal, brutal treatment.

What I wrote was NOT a justification, I strongly reject that notion. Strongly! I never said Brian deserved that kind of hellish treatment or that his family acted right. I just tried to put myself in their shoes, and if you read back, you will see that I added words like "probably" and "maybe" to my words, as I wasn't there and don't know what their situations were. What I do not believe is that the other band members did not care at all about Brian thinking "let him croak in that quack's claws".
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: April 09, 2016, 09:48:41 AM
I can see how someone would say "Lady" sounds a bit demo-ish, especially the original mix (or even the booted stereo mix that appears on various "Landlocked" reel boots). Mostly the very beginning of the song, with the rhythm box and very dry, up-front Dennis vocal has that vibe.

I think Desper was/is a genius mixer, and that Dennis' first lines are bone dry is just perfect. The emotions raw in your face, and then, when he first sings "Lady", the reverb expands and transcends the whole thing. When I first heard Linett's mix, I thought: "Oh no, what did he do? Reverb on Dennis' first lines?!? That's not how it's supposed to be!" Nothing demo-ish to me there. Deliberate molding of a piece of art.

I'm not sure BTW that a "normal" psychologist could have saved Brian. IMHO it took a ruthless kidnapper to save Brian from himself. It's like a leukemia cure, first you have to remove the old immune system with aggressive chemicals, but then you need to stop the chemicals because they'd kill you, and then you need a bone marrow donation. In this analogy Melinda would be the bone marrow donation.

And now I will probably think of that weird Smurfs Youtube clip every time I hear The Last Song.

Sorry for ruining the song for you... I'm pretty certain too that Brian never heard the song of the Smurfs "Das Lied der Schlümpfe".

I still can’t help but to think that Brian was still deeply bummed about how Mike abruptly quashed plans for a BB followup to TWGMTR, and that this could in part be to blame for some of the lack of inspiration that IMO affects parts of the album.

GAW AWN!  Angry You can't blame Mike for Brian making a lame solo album! When Brian's book comes out are you going to say it would have been a better book if Mike hadn't put Brian under pressure by also writing a book?

You're essentially saying Brian's work would be better with Mike on board?

If Mike had once again knuckled down to Brian's reign, the Wilson/Thomas production style would have been the same.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: April 08, 2016, 07:14:00 AM
Lady sounds more like a demo than a finished product.

How many demos do you know that feature a strings overdub?
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Book released October 11th on: April 08, 2016, 07:09:53 AM
Too many potentially good threads devolve into either Mike v Brian or Love-kicking fests, and I know that frustrates the majority of posters here.

This board has become a depressing place.

I would really like to return this back to the discussion of Brian's upcoming book.

You can forget about that right away. No hope. When Mike's book come out, better shut down the whole board for 3-4 months, put up just a sign: "Back January 1st 2017".

In "The Last Song" that song of the Smurfs part still rolls my toenails up.

What section/part of "The Last Song" sounds like The Smurfs? I'm feeling blue just thinking about it...

The la-la-la's, I should imagine:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqbpzEHuO2g

It's actually this what it reminds me of:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEYFgtxYxJ8&feature=player_detailpage#t=169

A bit longer, but without the images "The Last Song" conjures up in my mind:

Silly me, that song probably is unknown outside Germany and the Netherlands.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most embarrassing Beach Boys moment caught on tape? on: April 07, 2016, 09:06:44 AM
if so then why is Bruce acting "Confused" at the part where the lyrics go clunky? unless they did the clunky lyrics on the live performance I don't see why Bruce would do a "Confused" act..

Could be sheer coincidence. I was at a concert where there happened to be a loud booming feedback sound at one point. And at the time of the feedback, Dennis was on the screen, he started smiling at the camera and then rolled his eyes as if he was commenting the sound flub.

Is it me, or is Brian present on the falsetto line of this at 1.36 onwards for a bit.

I think it's Carl, could be Brian, but it's definitely not you. Wink 2

Is it one year already? I listened to it again the other day, and to me it's really Brian's "Summer In Paradise". Aside from "Runaway Dancer" there are absolutely no interesting sounds or arrangements on it. In "The Last Song" that song of the Smurfs part still rolls my toenails up. The vinyl track order works better for me, as the especially tedious tracks come later there. "Guess You Had To Be There", "Sad", "Saturday Night", and "Don't Worry" are decent tunes at least which would have made a nice EP.

I remember how puzzled and disappointed I was that I had to put it back on the shelf after the first two listens. Hail "That Lucky Old Sun", that one was great!
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did speeding up Caroline, No contribute to the single's lack of chart success? on: March 21, 2016, 07:55:20 AM
Not exactly answering your question, but I don't really like the original speed of Brian's vocals, it feels too low, I'd like a mix of the sped up vocals with the original speed backing track.
I think the track was sped up a half-step and then Brian recorded his vocals on top of that.  The "sped up" version sounds like his natural singing voice whereas the "original speed" version on the box set sounds slowed down.  I know that doesn't jibe with the official dogma, but that's what my ears hear.

When I first heard the released version I thought, Brian sounds pretty strange there, as if he had gone crazy somehow. When I later heard the original speed version, it sounded like Brian again. So I disagree with your ears and go with the dogma in this case.

The same with the original mono version of "Please Let Me Wonder", though in this case for my ears (rather my brain interpreting my ears' signals) the speeding up really makes Brian sound younger.
