I am very glad to hear that the reason is not the inclusion of DW material.  At least that strips away one layer of possible petty behavior.  Really hope that it comes out.  If anyone out there knows any other avenue by which we can, as fans, nudge this along, please let us know.

I think Made in California would not have had the tracklist it did if this were the case tbh. There was a LOT of Dennis on there, and that was a more major release. As much as Dennis and Mike had their issues, I think the FF release actually would semi-debunk the common myth/narrative about Mike. That is to say, "All I Wanna Do", "Big Sur", "Cool Cool Water", "Add Some Music", "Sound of Free", "Don't Go Near the Water", etc ... cast him in a good light and actually shows he was hip/involved in the music, not opposing it. This is to say, while this period may not be his favorite or particularly notable to him, I don't really think he would take issue with the material or track list.

That's a really good point.  My only defense would be that people change, say one thing one minute and do something else the next, and maybe this set just goes crazy DW in a way that he couldn't stand.  IDK.  I hope it does for DW fans, and I hope Mike is OK with it, for as others have said, he made some great contributions during this era.

I still think it should be called "It's About Time"Smiley

My initial thought (way, way back in this thread) for the reason that FF had been delayed was that Mike was jealous b/c this set was going to further expose DW as the second best songwriter in the band, and probably shower a lot of praise and attention his way.   (I'm not a Mike basher, btw.  I feel he deserves some of it, but not all.)   Until I hear a confirmed reason, I'm sticking with that initial hunch, even though I thought someone said way back it was a dispute over songwriting credits maybe?  IDK.  I check this thread every day, several times in fact, but it is hard to keep it all straight.

Very nice, thanks!  I really like that song.  I agree about the mysterious feel.

All of this talk about Lindsey Buckingham and HCGHOBTM made me realize that song has a bit of a "Holiday Road" vibe to it from National Lampoon's Vacation.

If Brian Wilson is Clark Griswold, then Mike Love is definitely Cousin Eddie  LOL

Cousin EDDIE HASKELL maybe:)

I can't answer your question, but yes, it was a strange time.  I remember reading an EW article about the Baywatch Nights song (still have it somewhere) with Brian talking about how great it was, and how they were going to add Carl's guitar next.  I was so pumped.  Then nothing, and suddenly they are on late night singing backup to a country singer.  I made my college roommates watch it, and their reaction was, "Why did they sell out?"  Leave it to them to keep you guessing.

Just playing Devin's advocate, but how would letters not help but a petition would?  At least a letter is directly showing up at the target.  IDK.  Just spitballing here.

Well, the guy who co wrote It's About Time.  (Burchman) The guy who helped Al write Looking at Tomorrow.  (Winfrey?)  Joe Knott.  Shapiro.  Lieber and Stoller.  Jakobson.

Nice first post!

Is there a specific entity we can barrage with emails?  I signed the petition; but maybe we can hit it another way.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What actually happened to Dennis' aborted solo album in '72? on: August 15, 2020, 06:38:36 PM
I am as big a  DW fan as there is, but this album would have needed a few up tempo songs too.  A looooot of ballads.  Nothing wrong with those, but he could write rockers too.

Welcome, as well!  We are happy to have you.

That is a fantastic idea, Billy.

Those photos remind me of the amusement park gig where Spinal Tap played "Jazz Odyssey".

If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times, put Beach Boys first and Puppet Show LAST.

Eventually it will be released.  Don't worry.  Cooler heads will prevail:)

Lol, I actually kinda like that song.  But I hear ya.  Goofy as hell, but sweet.

Welcome to the board!  We need more of you posting.  Thanks for taking the time.  I feel like there are a lot of people out there like you, kinda lurking.  That was myself for many years.

I’d love to know the opinion of all the people who constantly defend Mike for everything. Is it worth not getting the box set?

I would love to know what the complaint was...perhaps ‘Student Demonstration Time’ didn’t get its own CD full of session takes and alternate versions? Or maybe he wanted to slather the “not great” autotune on every song? Actually, I wonder if he wrote the last three words in ‘A Day In The Life Of A Tree’ and is now demanding 1/3rd of the credit for the entire song.

This band is the personification of Yin and Yang: for every good thing that happens there is always an equally negative thing that has to follow it.

I was really hoping some Covid issue was holding his up in the hopes that a certain band member actually put his big-boy pants on and approved the set. But of course there was some stupid problem that completely fucks over the fans. And to those that think this is entitled: this is just how passionate we are about this beautiful music. So yeah, I’m just a meaningless fan whose already bought Sunflower for the third time, but yeah I wanna hear the vocals-only of ‘All I Wanna Do’ because I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard and I want to hear more of it.

Well said, brother.  BTW I love your avatar pic and quote.

The band owes me nothing, but they owe one another respect for the incredible body of work they created over the last 60 years.

This was such a great time for everyone in the band.  Shame if someone is blocking it.  My gut tells me someone is jealous of DW content.

Who can we start writing to to apply pressure?
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Any isolated tracks of Dennis playing guitar? on: July 10, 2020, 05:41:41 PM
This is kind of unrelated, but on Tune L you can hear someone (I presumed Dennis) singing in the background.  Anyone know anything about that?  In my opinion this song was a missed opportunity in a sea of them for the band.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unpopular Beach Boys opinions on: July 10, 2020, 05:34:48 PM
Here’s another one, I don’t think good vibrations should be played live. Other than Brian‘s smile shows in 2004, it never sounds good live. It never sounded good live in the 60s, it sounded too empty. Same with the 70s, and now it just sounds horrible on stage.

Going to have to agree with you here for the most part.  I haven't really heard a live version that I like.  I always thought they should have ramped up the guitar parts in place of the missing cello when done live.   Not to overdo it and make it hard rock, but those cellos are powerful, and not having them leaves a massive hole.

And while I'm at it, other than Busy Doin' Nothing and Meant for You I don't like Friends.  If I had been a record-buying fan and bought that back in the day it would have been my last BB album.  Of course I did continue to buy BB product after buying SIP, so who really knows.

Yep- Great album.  Only thing I would change is the cover.  I get the vibe they were going for, but I think they could have done better.
