The guys in the band should see this set as a legacy thing.  It's not about selling units or getting fans now, it's about cementing their standing and winning fans for decades

How many of you have played the live version of Blondie singing Wild Honey, or WIBNTLA, or the alternate All I Want to Do with Dennis singing lead, or even an audience recording of them doing Jumpin' Jack Flash to a friend?  How many of the friends liked it and thought wow, this is the Beach Boys?  I'm raising my hand, and these are people who wouldn't listen to the Beach Boys on a bet.  How many other people do you think they in turn passed it on to?  Things like that roll across the years paying dividends, more so than another version of Do It Again.  Long term, long term.

Personally, the unreleased Dennis material is what I want most.  As much as I'd love to hear an instrumental "At My Window" (which I actually would), unreleased music by a talented songwriter is the trump card, and I hope the people involved realize that is how some of us feel.

Thanks for sharing that- I really appreciate it.  Other than Carl, doesn't sound like they were too engaging.

That is pretty cool.  What were the circumstances around you getting backstage to speak with Carl?

There is a sampling of a concert on YouTube where they play Student Demonstration Time live, and Carl plays the guitar solo in a really electric bluesy style, with a slide. It's awesome. I wish I could find it again. I've tried, but no luck. It's only a few songs, and the name didn't indicate the songs at all.

I don't guess that is what you are speaking of, but it is a pretty cool version of the song.  Especially the extended instrumental part.

Didn't someone post here once that when Carl lived in Colorado he sometimes played with a blues band at a bar or something to that effect?

I am very glad to hear that the reason is not the inclusion of DW material.  At least that strips away one layer of possible petty behavior.  Really hope that it comes out.  If anyone out there knows any other avenue by which we can, as fans, nudge this along, please let us know.

I think Made in California would not have had the tracklist it did if this were the case tbh. There was a LOT of Dennis on there, and that was a more major release. As much as Dennis and Mike had their issues, I think the FF release actually would semi-debunk the common myth/narrative about Mike. That is to say, "All I Wanna Do", "Big Sur", "Cool Cool Water", "Add Some Music", "Sound of Free", "Don't Go Near the Water", etc ... cast him in a good light and actually shows he was hip/involved in the music, not opposing it. This is to say, while this period may not be his favorite or particularly notable to him, I don't really think he would take issue with the material or track list.

That's a really good point.  My only defense would be that people change, say one thing one minute and do something else the next, and maybe this set just goes crazy DW in a way that he couldn't stand.  IDK.  I hope it does for DW fans, and I hope Mike is OK with it, for as others have said, he made some great contributions during this era.

I still think it should be called "It's About Time"Smiley

My initial thought (way, way back in this thread) for the reason that FF had been delayed was that Mike was jealous b/c this set was going to further expose DW as the second best songwriter in the band, and probably shower a lot of praise and attention his way.   (I'm not a Mike basher, btw.  I feel he deserves some of it, but not all.)   Until I hear a confirmed reason, I'm sticking with that initial hunch, even though I thought someone said way back it was a dispute over songwriting credits maybe?  IDK.  I check this thread every day, several times in fact, but it is hard to keep it all straight.

Very nice, thanks!  I really like that song.  I agree about the mysterious feel.

All of this talk about Lindsey Buckingham and HCGHOBTM made me realize that song has a bit of a "Holiday Road" vibe to it from National Lampoon's Vacation.

If Brian Wilson is Clark Griswold, then Mike Love is definitely Cousin Eddie  LOL

Cousin EDDIE HASKELL maybe:)

I can't answer your question, but yes, it was a strange time.  I remember reading an EW article about the Baywatch Nights song (still have it somewhere) with Brian talking about how great it was, and how they were going to add Carl's guitar next.  I was so pumped.  Then nothing, and suddenly they are on late night singing backup to a country singer.  I made my college roommates watch it, and their reaction was, "Why did they sell out?"  Leave it to them to keep you guessing.

Just playing Devin's advocate, but how would letters not help but a petition would?  At least a letter is directly showing up at the target.  IDK.  Just spitballing here.

Well, the guy who co wrote It's About Time.  (Burchman) The guy who helped Al write Looking at Tomorrow.  (Winfrey?)  Joe Knott.  Shapiro.  Lieber and Stoller.  Jakobson.

Nice first post!

Is there a specific entity we can barrage with emails?  I signed the petition; but maybe we can hit it another way.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What actually happened to Dennis' aborted solo album in '72? on: August 15, 2020, 06:38:36 PM
I am as big a  DW fan as there is, but this album would have needed a few up tempo songs too.  A looooot of ballads.  Nothing wrong with those, but he could write rockers too.

Welcome, as well!  We are happy to have you.

That is a fantastic idea, Billy.

Those photos remind me of the amusement park gig where Spinal Tap played "Jazz Odyssey".

If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times, put Beach Boys first and Puppet Show LAST.

Eventually it will be released.  Don't worry.  Cooler heads will prevail:)

Lol, I actually kinda like that song.  But I hear ya.  Goofy as hell, but sweet.

Welcome to the board!  We need more of you posting.  Thanks for taking the time.  I feel like there are a lot of people out there like you, kinda lurking.  That was myself for many years.
