1  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank the tracks #23: L.A. Album on: February 15, 2020, 09:36:32 PM
I'll only say that I think Full Sail is a much better song than it's generally given credit for -- a lovely, melancholic tune with Carl's best lead in years, well suited to the adult contemporary production style that is otherwise not to my tastes. The only other songs I enjoy without reservation are Good Timin' and Baby Blue. However, I don't think it's a bad album, which I wouldn't say for anything later under the BBs' name until TWGMTR.

If I was truer to the "goofy side" concept, I'd have subbed SC for Games Two Can Play. But SC is a better song.

The idea here is for a sweet side, a Dennis side, a goofy side (all the songs the record company didn't like) and an Americana/Brian-as-artist side.

Thanks for that CD - crude but effective. Has anyone else raised the possibility that Mike Love's eagerly awaited next solo album might consist of Nick Rivers covers?

Also, Sunflower released with the quality and stereo quality that my old Statside import lp has...

That (i.e. the UK issue) was my first copy of the album, and I'm reminded now of an odd fact -- "Got To Know The Woman" and "Deirdre" are reversed in the track order on that version. I wonder what that was all about.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Murry Wilson And Snow on: December 17, 2019, 08:21:37 PM
Syd Barrett talk sounds a bit fanciful from what I'm hearing (which admittedly isn't all of it). I suggest the principal influence here is Hair (as in the musical).

ETA: I'm just going off the Murry Wilson stuff here, so perhaps the material cited by Don Malcolm is a different story.

Definitely Carl, in that very distinctive and not always pleasing way he had of singing at that particular time.

Presumably though a point comes where a judge has to rule that something is uncopyrightable by virtue of not being music.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: November 23, 2019, 10:26:40 AM
I thought it was going to be an entire box set of Feel Flows sessions.
Bring it on!
My first assumption that was that it would be a version of Feel Flows with a four-hour flute solo, spanning five CDs.
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Title edit: Carl Wilson late 70s (formerly Trouble in Paradise) on: September 11, 2019, 07:49:46 PM
I never thought Carl's vocals were too bad on Love You, but I havent listened to it in a while tho. just curious, which songs/parts of songs would you say he sounds "ragged" on?

His lead on The Night Was So Young lacks its usual mellifluousness, and while that goes double for Let Us Go On This Way, that's probably because the song doesn't really suit his voice (I love both songs, BTW). I think though that the worst of his vocals from the period were actually from Adult Child.

A lot of people here seem to have known Kim Fowley. I'd be interested to hear if any of them have a take on the Jackie Fox/Runaways controversy from a few years ago.

I'm not sure that "Tarantino film ends in OTT bloodbath" counts as a spoiler.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Quentin Tarantino Prepping New Movie Tackling Manson Murders on: August 29, 2019, 10:31:32 PM
Perhaps Quentin Tarantino should do his homework. This old theory has been debunked by several eyewitnesses statements telling that when Manson appeared at the Benedict Canyon house, weeks before the murders took place, he was informed that Terry had moved out.

Which is exactly what happens in the film. Indeed, that's precisely what's happening the one and only time Manson appears. The bit where Tarantino appears not to have done his homework comes later.

Hearing that soundtrack took the movie up a thousand notches of anticipation for me after the lukewarm media reviews.

Its rating on Metacritic is 85%.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mark Doyle's instrumental rendition of \ on: July 18, 2019, 03:45:34 AM

Sorry, Don, but this, unfortunately, sounds nothing more than "muzak" and does not do anything to embellish or add Christmas lights to the existing original song.

While I don't disagree with this, it's interesting to hear the song done in this style, as the average listener would presume they were listening to an interpretation of some great jazz standard -- which was indeed the musical level Brian was operating on here, long after he had supposedly dried up creatively. Unfortunately, the lyrics and singing on the demo and Adult Child versions are always going to be deal-breakers for the general audience.

Come to think of it...did Carl write any solo songs? I think he might be the only band member who doesn't have any credited solo tracks solo or with the band aside from Blondie & Ricky

Carl has solo credits on Shut Down Part II (which I always really liked) and Surf Jam off Surfin' USA (which I can't remember off the top of my head).

I refuse to believe that Mike Love wrote the middle-eight to Let The Wind Blow.

Is there anything particularly morally objectionable about gentlemen in late middle age having sex in swimming polls? Asking for a friend.

This cover (non-negatived) is featured is David Leaf's old book, of which I have the 1985 edition. It is noted in the book that the track listing, which is too small to see in the images above, consists entirely of songs unknown to Beach Boys lore. As explained in the link below, this was because they were lifted from The Best Of Michael Parks, presumably in anticipation of being substituted when the real track listing was determined.

I should add that the song overall doesn't bother me too bad-- but those lyrics just try too hard.

Me, I think they're "totally rad". Because that's the way me and the guys talk, down at the country club.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: California Calling on: February 28, 2019, 12:00:54 AM
It was apparently released as a single (commercial and promo?) in Australia:

Which I own a copy of! God knows why.

The bit with Al Jardine being all pissy is pretty funny too.

Love this line on page 61:

While Usher and Jardine shared reminiscences, Melcher and the engineers were busy assembling the various songs.

Sold. I'll buy your book and read it. But are ther any plans to make a Kindle edition? I live abroad and would prefer a version I could read on my Ebook, but if not I'll order the paperback.
This. I'm really intrigued by this book, warts and all, and I'd buy it on Kindle in a heartbeat. Living as I do in Australia though, I can't justify to myself the expense imposed by international shipping and our weak dollar.

Oh lordy, I hope there’s tapes.  Grin

If there are, there's probably as good a chance as hearing them as we'd have of ever hearing the Brian/Carl-produced Manson tapes.

The tape that is discussed in the Pamplin book is the audio recording of the Australian punch-out conference with David Frost. According to the book, Stan Love secretly taped that meeting. No mention of whether or not that recording has survived.
FYI.

Maybe it'll be on the 1978 copyright extension release.

Eight new recordings of Barbara Ann! I've died and gone to heaven.
