been listening the last few days and I am loving it! Oh boy they NAILED the Susie Cincinnati mix this time, this is my favorite mix of it by far. Also "Sound of Free" sounds really great, love the harder guitar sounds towards the end. Has anyone else listened to the Marcella acapella like 50 times? Holy heck Mike Love's bass parts on there and the "uh-huh" harmonies on the second verse are amazing. I think I just noticed something... Is that Dennis singing the "one arm, ONE ARM over my shoulder, sandals.. that dance, DANCE at my feet ,etc, Her eyes, THOSE eyes etc" part on the left speaker second chorus starting around around 1:36?? it sounds like him and it's amazing and I never realized it until now.

On the original it might be some sort of synth handclaps mixed with real handclaps, I tried to put mine louder in my mix but I couldn't get it to work with all the harmony and other stuff going on. Brians productions were amazing in all different sounds he could fit in the soundspace without any clashing. I have more and more respect and appreciation for Brian and what he does with each passing day.

Thanks for listening! Yeah, the backing track is all using the ARTURIA keyboard plugin on Logic Pro X. They have a bunch of Moog Synths and I had to play around with it to get most of the sounds pretty close. I couldn't recreate a good version of the one winey synth that is panned to the right (the one that also is featured in the bridge) , so I chose something that was a little smoother. My voice is definitely better suited for just the Carl bridge of this song, but it was a good challenge to sing something a little more rougher during the verses and choruses. Theres also probably over 40 vocal overdubs for the backing tracks . I'm pretty happy with how the verse harmonies came out, but getting the harmonies at the ending was a tough mother.

To all the people commenting about the lack of outto-tune on the Peter Hollens track "Our Special Love". I was in an acapella group in college and Peter Hollens produced our album. This was in like 2008 but it sounds like he uses the same production techniques as he did then as he does now. He uses outto-tune on his tracks (most people in the biz do) but it is in an understated and appropriate way, it sounds like he had some production involvement in "Our Special Love" as the production sounds VERY familiar to our album. Don't know what that means in the lack of the Joe Thomas songwriting credit, but for what its worth I know for a fact Peter Hollens uses outto-tune. Big Fan of Hollens and glad his track made it on the BW album. Wish he produced more of the tracks on the album but thats just me.
Sail Away, Whatever Happened and Tell Me Why are my fav tracks. Al Jardine for president.
Anyone know if Chaplin sang background vocals on other tracks besides "sail away"?

Thank you Mr. Desper. Your posts are always great reads, and really reflect a passion and a reverence you had for working with the band. It is so great to have you on Smiley Smile with us. Great story about this song, I had no idea it had been worked on for so long, nor that Carl had laid down so many different lead vocal tracks during the Surfs Up period. I will be first in line to purchase the long awaited and much anticipated re-release of your book, which i'm sure has more stories like these. Thanks!

I dunno, I still think "Make it Big" and "Problem Child" are still miles ahead of anything from SIP. It's the Carl Wilson factor. Man even today I had to "Who wants to grow up/who wants responsibility... ooh ooh ooh" stuck in my head. Those oohs are soulful! I mean Carl just had a way of making even a marginal song like Problem Child sound catchy. He should have had more leads on SIP. I do sincerely enjoy "Make It Big" though. Its great for its style (big 80s). Not really a "Beach Boys" song though.

agree, sounds like a lost hit from the 60s. Love the jangly guitars and the harpsichord. Like it more and more everyday. Jeff does a fine job but I know what you mean about Carl singing it.
