Not yet noted has been the addition of the black “privacy cloth” under the piano, concealing Brian’s hands and legs from the audience.

He had the privacy cloth on last fall's tour as well, I took this photo in Waukegan.

I'm sure it's been posted elsewhere in the forums, but the Telephone Backgrounds were posted to the Beach Boys bandcamp if you feel like giving them $10 for scraps.

Have wanted to hear this for awhile. Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a safe way to store these clips? I use to use iLivid but I have removed it due to a computer meltdown.

Just use google to find the original FLAC files - much nicer quality than ripping from youtube.

Edit - I'm an idiot and didn't realize how old this thread was. Just saw the Month/Date. Sorry!

I recently attended two small gigs headlined by a popular, contemporary musician. We talked at both shows, and it sort of took me aback when he looked to me for validation on the most recent show being the better of the two. Like, we have a grammy-award winning musician, whose every album has been critically acclaimed, and he was looking to me, some random dude to validate his performance?

(I enjoyed the first show more, but that's not a knock against the 2nd! Both were fun)

I was pleasantly surprised by Brian's performance last night in Waukegan. I've been to a few shows these past 5 years and they were rough, Brian slurring words, strange timing and delivery of lines, missing words where Al would have to jump in, coughing into the microphone,  etc. There was none of that last night, Brian sounded great throughout.

OK just got notice from Amazon.de that my 5CD and 2CD sets have shipped, and are expected on Friday!

Is there content found on the 2CD set not available on the 5 CD set?

As for now, I don't know how his falsetto is right now on the road. Last I saw them was the 2018 Christmas tour, and Bruce was still hitting the FFF line out of the park with ease...credit where it's due!

I was surprised to hear him do it tonight,  it still sounds good!

Supposedly "SURFSUP" is the pre-sale password for all shows, starting today at 10:00am "local time." Well, the Mrs. and I have been trying for Waukegan since 10:00am our local time to no avail. Last I saw, it's definitely past 10:00am local time in that bustling metropolis of Waukegan.
Yeah, I was struggling with that show as well for a couple hours. It's live now though.

Anyone have presale passwords?
Thanks!
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys (Mike/Bruce) appearing on CNN 4th of July special on: July 05, 2021, 08:38:20 AM
I’m gonna be honest, I actually thought that was pretty okay. They sounded much better than I would have expected. Definitely not the embarrassment the Mark McGrath performance of a couple of years ago was.
Same. They sound old, but that's fine, because they are old. I'd take this over autotune or lipsynch.

Hello! I was wondering if anyone knows where most/all of the BB bootlegs come from or how they got "leaked"?

The rumor I heard is most of the Sea of Tunes bootlegs leaked from someone who worked on The Beach Boys: An American Family documentary.

I'd be curious to learn how things like Adult Child leaked.

I love Jump! I picked up a use copy on vinyl from the local record store, probably my favorite music purchase of the last year.

I haven't given his solo work enough attention yet, but appreciate his contributions to Smile and his work in arranging the strings for Joanna Newsom's Ys.

I usually check Qobuz first because the pricing generally is better, but it's hard to beat the selection at HDTracks if you're looking for high-res stuff (Flac/ALAC/DSD) https://www.hdtracks.com/#/artist/The%20Beach%20Boys

Also, I find it humorous that the people who complain so much about capitalism do so on computers/phones built by child labor with parts that are undeniably killing this planet.

Mike's touring band publicizing archival Beach Boys product has always been kind of conflicting and weird for a lot of fans. But he's been doing it for ages, so, so be it.

You mean The Beach Boys?
If you go to the Beach Boys' official site, all the show are credited to Mike Love, not The Beach Boys.

several takeaways:

-Mike sounds really good, and this proves he doesn't need to rely on autotune
Unless I'm confusing my sound processing, I believe he is autotuned here.

You obviously missed "Happy Birthday America" if "Problem Child" is on the bottom of your pile!

I did, but this doesn't strike the nerves quite the same as Summer of Love or Problem Child.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Problem Child on CD on: February 08, 2021, 06:20:22 AM
I always liked this song. Carl is well...CARL! nowhere near the worst thing they've done IMO.

No snark intended, but what would you consider their worst? This is at the bottom of my pile, but I'm sure there are things I've missed.

I grew up associating Stamos with Mike Love and the Beach Boys, but can someone tell me how Sugar Ray got wrapped up with Mike and crew? I'd be so upset if I paid for tickets and showed up.

I've neglected most late 70s and beyond Beach Boys releases, but I find this song pretty fun.

He's nowhere in the credits for Knebworth and wouldn't have been involved anyway at that time. I may be misremembering it, and please correct if so, but I think the pitch correction on Knebworth was applied at the request of certain band members or involved parties after hearing the raw tapes. I also think it may have gone against the wishes of others involved, but again that's for another discussion if that memory is accurate.

As far as BB '85, they were going for a current hit record sound which is why they brought in Steve Levine, who is a top-notch producer and did what he was hired to do on that album. Steve could speak to more of what he did (and has spoken highly of working with Brian on the record but not as highly about the band as a whole) with the mixing and recording. But in 1984, if it was a use of pitch correction that was audible, it could have been as simple a patch-in as an Eventide Harmonizer which would digitally generate a harmony or doubled note on top of the original note (the Eventide was literally everywhere in the 80's), or as in-depth as sampling vocal notes into whatever early samplers they had available and pitching each sampled note digitally.

Keep in mind both the Eventide and those early samplers were used as aesthetic, sonic effects as much as trying to correct something and sound natural. Those sounds were on hit records in 1984-85 and labels would ask producers and engineers to use them to make songs sound like hit records.

Agreed, whatever effects the Eventide and samplers added in the 80s to BBs material sound good to my ears. Autotune is as dreadful as it gets, and once you hear it, and can recognize it, it's impossible to unhear it.

I obviously don't listen to a lot of music that has autotune. At the risk of being revealed as a complete recording neophyte, can you tell me what autotune sounds like? Or point me in the direction of one recording that has been autotuned and one that has not?

Listen to Mike's vocals, he sounds like he's part Speak And Spell.

Here's a live recording:

No speak and spell quality

Yeah these don't look like socially distanced/outdoor gigs at all, what's going on?
The shows were advertised as being sold at full capacity, and that everyone should wear a mask.

Kamala does her best Spinal Tap https://youtu.be/gjNOxrzU-As

Joe Biden is Joe Biden's husband  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6G9-UykIBw

Now that is a great combo to support!

Are you for real? He says "Jill Biden's husband", because his wife's name is Jill.
