1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What would you want on an expanded IN CONCERT? on: February 05, 2025, 11:49:23 AM
Resuscitating this link.....2023 and 2024 came and went, and unfortunately there was no expanded version of IN CONCERT.   It seemed to be the next logical release following the arc of the Feel Flows and Sail On Sailor Box sets.  Are there any rumblings that we might see an expanded IN CONCERT or is this just wishful thinking?
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So uh, was there a copyright dump? on: April 19, 2023, 04:32:54 PM
Were the 47 live songs from Passaic NJ in November 1972 part of the Copyright Dump?
I'm listening to them now (there is a link on YT) and they are great - obviously very similar to the Carnegie show on SoS as it was recorded a few days earlier.
Just can't make head nor tail of what they are as some songs are done 4 times, and yes there were 2 shows, but still.
Having searched many sources I can find hardly any mention of them.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Jon

Can you post the Youtube link?  I've searched but I cannot find it. Thanks!

For my money keep the In Concert to 3 discs. Disc 1: the In Concert album. Disc 2: The rejected single album. Disc 3: Key and noteworthy tracks, such as River Song, and great performances of tracks not included in Discs 1 & 2. Then release on-line four or more selected shows recorded during the "In Concert" recordings in '72 & '73. A good start would be be the Capitol Theatre, Passaic show(s) from 16 November '72. There were around 17 shows recorded as far as I can tell, so there is a wealth or material. Full show releases need to be edited as anyone who is familiar with the Carnegie boot will know its full of tuning and unnecessary monologue when the tuning takes place - we can do without more of that! Release a fifth show on vinyl for Record Store Day '23 so that the elitist completists out there have something to brag about  Smiley  I'll happily wait until the needle drops start circulating.

Sign me up for this!  Great idea.

If the next archival release is to be an expanded IN CONCERT, what would you want on it?  First off, I would like to see a 4 disc set that includes Blondie singing RIVER SONG,  a raucous SAIL ON SAILOR, HERE SHE COMES [it was played quite a bit in 72] , DO IT AGAIN [love the version from Carnegie Hall], COOL COOL WATER.  What's on your list?
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Here She Comes - Most popular song on CATP on: December 08, 2022, 09:03:35 PM
It's a great tune - do we know whether it was ever played live?
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sail On Sailor box set on: December 08, 2022, 03:39:29 PM
I have been listening to the set on Spotify and have been blown away.  Both CATP and Holland sound great and I love the remixes.  It's a shame that the did not get more airplay back in the day.  But I'm even more impressed with the live stuff - they sound so tight yet loose and their joy for the music and playing really shines through.  I love the intro and arrangement on Do It Again, Wild Honey.  Darlin' sounds great too.  And Jumpin' Jack Flash?  WOW!  This set also leads me to ask why was We Got Love left off Holland?  That could have been a staple on FM radio.  However, if I can nitpick, to me the only thing missing from this set is a raucous live version of Sail On Sailor with Blondie singing the lead.  Perhaps that can be made available as a digital download?  With that in mind, I hope the next release is an expanded IN CONCERT.

Definitely Mike Love's finest tune in the Beach Boys pantheon.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you associate Cabin Essence & Surf's Up more with Smile or 20/20 & Surf's Up? on: September 09, 2021, 06:16:16 AM
Great question.  I'm dating myself here, but I remember getting the Wild Honey - 20/20 2 LP set in the late 70s, the album cover was a sand cover with a painting of a girl in a bikini on it.  The second side of 20/20 closed with Our Prayer and Cabinessence and stood out from the rest of tunes to my middle-school ears.  Both compositions really stood out from the rest of the album.  It would be years later that I learned the whole SMiLE story.

I also like the live version from the Carnegie Hall concerts - it's fun and loose.  When will those shows be released???

Thank you guitarfool2002 for such an informative post - I didn't know anything about the history of this tune.  I agree, an album of Diamond Head music from Brian Wilson would have been incredible.  Thanks again.

I've always loved Diamond Head and wondered, who wrote it?  who plays on it?  what was the inspiration?  Just a groovy little tune.

Wow - I wonder how many test pressings they let out.  I recall seeing a photo somewhere of it as a single disc.

I agree that with that song lineup it would have not been as popular without more hits.  How was the version of Do It Again?
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is there an appreciation thread for The Beach Boys In Concert [1973] on: June 07, 2021, 06:10:26 AM
I think You Need a Mess of Help is one of their most underrated tunes - it's super catchy and has great swagger.  I've also been trying to find a live version of that tune as well, but all I've found so far are voice overs from European TV shows.  I knew that Jumpin' Jack Flash was to be the last track when it was planned to be a single disc - does anyone have the full track listing for the proposed single disc In Concert?
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is there an appreciation thread for The Beach Boys In Concert [1973] on: June 06, 2021, 06:32:34 PM
Insert Quote
It will be interesting to see how the In Concert album is treated over the next 2 years. The album used a mix of tracks recorded in 72 & 73. I'd like to think we see a 72 copyright extension using the rejected single album disk plus other tracks recorded at the 72 shows then something more substantial in 2023 with the full In Concert covered - or maybe next year we get a couple of full shows, then a respectful In Concert release in 2023 - it will be interesting.

I hope you are correct - I would love an extended In Concert including Wild Honey, Do It Again, Jumpin Jack Flash, etc.

HI again - I was listening to In Concert again last night and it got me thinking whether there is any live version from this era of Do It Again?  If so, I would love to hear it!

22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Caribou Ranch (1975) fanmix on: April 18, 2018, 07:38:51 PM
Both Shortenin' Bread and Rolling Up to Heaven are great examples of the BB genius - take a simple melody and add layers of vocals to make it something different.  Add in the early 70s looseness of the band and these are just great fun tunes.

Love that version of Had To Phone Ya - the horn in the beginning has a SMiLE feel to it - where is that version from?

23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Caribou Ranch (1975) fanmix on: April 18, 2018, 04:56:58 AM
Really enjoy this mix - it has a great vibe.  I've always had a soft spot for Rollin' Up to Heaven - it's got a great fun silly groove although it's not an easy song to sing in public or around your kids.

Do you think they could have gotten away with releasing such a tune back in the day and explained it's just a joke?  If so, the revisionists would have certainly had a field day years later, not to mention explaining this tune within this #MeToo era.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 2018 Record Store Day - The Beach Boys on: February 19, 2018, 03:18:35 AM
I would like a more full In Concert album with more of the Carnegie Hall show.  It would be great to have a 4 cd set of songs from the Ricky and Blondie era.
25  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Tom Petty RIP on: October 03, 2017, 05:23:19 AM
Sad about the news of Tom Petty's passing.  I was nothing more than a casual fan, but I always enjoyed his music, especially his tribute to Brian, Hung Up and Overdue, which appears on the great soundtrack he did called She's The One which also features Carl on background vocals.
