76  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What did LSD do to BW? on: February 27, 2009, 12:40:42 PM
I'm not sure that LSD is completely to blame. I think the fact that he was already experienceing the affects of being paranoid schitzophrenic didnt help. I'm sure the acid only worsened the symptoms.

Not to make this a drug forum or anything but was the acid of the late 60's more powerful than the acid of today? I'm not a burnout or anything but I have had a few experiences with Liquid LSD in my early 20's. It was powerful but I dont ever remember feeling completely out of control. Maybe the LSD from back then was just stronger. Maybe Brain had a connection with Owsley:) .  Any of you guys around back in the day to comment?

I can honestly say that I have never made it through the whole 10 minutes of that tune.

Mike...a flasher? Thats great stuff.

I never knew that they had played with the Sir Douglas Quintet....Doug Sahm was the man....
81  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Major Crimes - CD's that we should have and don't. on: January 15, 2009, 07:51:32 AM
After seeing the thread about songs we like to hear, it got me to thinking about CD's that we really should have and don't. One's that have even been released elsewhere, and ones that would only take some minimal effort on Capitol's part (Capitol btw now owns the entire Brother Tape Library...they are free to do whatever.).

Some examples:

A Brian Wilson Productions collection
The Beach Boys In Concert Volume 2 (3,4,5,etc.)
Ten Years Of Harmony(I mean, why isnt this in print?)
Carl's two solo CD's.

Any others? I know this is a fluff question, but one that makes you think.

Oh, and I would love to see a new BB comp put out. It is one that we could do ourselves, but, it would be nice to see it officially (from previous legal releases). The tracks that could be on it are:

Do You Like Worms
Prayer
Fall Breaks And Back To Winter
Wind Chimes
Heroes And Villians
Surf's Up
Good Vibrations
Cabin Essence
Wonderful
I'm In Great Shape & H&V demo
Vega-Tables
Cool Cool Water
Can't Wait Too Long
Well You're Welcome
With Me Tonight (from Hawthorne Ca.)

This could even be the cover:

I'm with you on the In Concert series. Neil Young, The Allmans, Phish, Widespread Panic are now making a killing by releasing live shows from their vaults. Surely there could be a series like these from the BB's.

His first album is really great. VDP did the orchestral parts if I remember correctly.
83  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If you could pick 5 albums to play for Brian Wilson... on: November 25, 2008, 06:34:18 AM
I think it would be great if, say, he were a guest in my home and were perusing my music collection, then asking me to show him five albums he hadn't heard. Otherwise, no thanks. The glazed-eyed, uninterested Brian would depress me. My dad is about Brian's age ... I get enough disinterest from him when I play him music I like. Remember, just because some band may claim Brian as an influence, or sound to our ears like Brian, (for better or for worse) doesn't mean he'd give half a foda about them. He's made pretty clear over the years that he wants to listen to what he already likes. I say leave the old guy alone.

Take a look at most of the topics on this board. If BW/BB fans dont have hypothetical situations to discuss, there wouldnt be much discussion at all.

There is some strong hate in this thread. Happy Holidays everyone! LOL
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If you could pick 5 albums to play for Brian Wilson... on: November 24, 2008, 10:05:04 AM
I'd also play some for him that he would more than likely hate...I'd actually be more interested to sit down and discuss tunes with Scott or Darian. Not that I dont love Bri!

Wilco: Being There
Joe Henry: Fuse
I'm also gonna include The Flaming Lips: The Soft Bulletin, it's one of my favorites
I have to include Weezer: The Blue Album cause it's a masterpiece
R.E.M. - Up

I adore that J.Dilla album. It's been in heavy rotation as of late.

I asked Alan Boyd about this one via myspace a few months ago.  I assumed it was Bruce but he said it was indeed an Al tune. I wish they had finished that one.  It kinda sounded to me like it would have fit nicely on the Holland album. The version I have is on Landylocked.
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did the band tour to support Friends? on: October 14, 2008, 02:00:59 PM
I was at the Memphis show in 1968 and can confirm that they did perform the song "Friends."

Thats really sweet that you got to see the band during that era. What all can you tell me about the show?
My mother in law got to see the band when she was at Ohio State in '72 or '73 (she cant remember what year exactly, apparently she was really into qualudes at the time  LOL)
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did the band tour to support Friends? on: October 14, 2008, 11:21:42 AM
I bet TM was a good rocker in concert (like All I want To Do!) I could just imagine....

Did the band tour when Mike went to Rishikesh? I'm guessing they just recorded Friends (with him on half the album) with no tour.

speaking of supporting albums vs. oldies.....what's with the early 70's setlists having mid 60s rarities like vegetables, country air, etc.?

Seems like I remember hearing that the vox for  "Meant for You" were the first thing Mike worked on when he returned from India.

Wow, great information everyone. I've learned the parts on guitar and bass for most of the album and they arent easy ones to play by any means. I was curious if they gave these a shot live. I'll keep my eyes open.
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did the band tour to support Friends? on: October 13, 2008, 02:25:25 PM
Does anyone know if they performed the title track to the album?
93  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Did the band tour to support Friends? on: October 13, 2008, 01:43:52 PM
Most of the boots I have from the era may have a song or two from the Friends L.P. but thats about all I've seen. Did the band play many songs live from the album? Just curious.
94  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Ok Seriosuly... on: October 13, 2008, 06:51:47 AM
Thats a pretty awful looking pic of Brian but its still better than the Glen Campbell mug shot. Thanks Glen!

Thats a pretty good one. An FM broadcast if I remember. Nice introduction from Bill Graham.
96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Brian signing CD's in Nashville? on: October 03, 2008, 01:50:39 PM
I found this on some random blog so take it with a grain of salt.

"You may recall from our post last week that Brian Wilson is playing The Ryman November 10. And yes, tickets are still available. Well Grimey's has just announced that they'll be hosting the wacky Beach Boy at an in-store signing and brunch on November 9 at 1 p.m. The only catch: you have to buy Wilson's latest album That Lucky Old Sun in order to meet him. "

It's a nice snapshot of the late 60's. I guess I cant really say that since I wasnt born till 75 but its a nice snapshot of what I imagine the late 60's were like. One of my favorite records of all time. My wife and I love to put this album on while making dinner. Cool Guy

The fetal positions story sounds like a pantload to me. Who supposedly saw him in this position, the divers who retrieved the body?
