Happy Birthday to a hell of a great guy and a tremendous talent and spirit, and fellow Burbank survivor. Had the pleasure to meet (and bother) Mr. and Mrs. Marks here in Atlanta a few weeks ago, and- along with the stellar, very spontaneous performance he gave us- it's one of those rare Beach Boys moments I'll treasure until they box me up.
Spotting my copy of the book and the pen in my hand, he motioned me over to the bar where a meal had just been placed before him. Here's the opening dialogue:
SJ: I really hate to bother a guy while he's eating dinner. DM (big David Marks grin, handshake extended): B___s___!
A hell of a guy, God bless 'em both, and Happy Birthday.
Red Bull lifted to DLM on what I'll call the Roger Maris birthday. A twenty-one squirt gun salute.
Now give us another album.
Where in Atlanta did you run into him at?

I'll ask my band and think about doing "Soul searchin'". Is there a deadline when we all should have finished our recordings?
I'm in no hurry, I'm gonna try and do something in Garageband or Cakewalk so I'm gonna want a little time to work with the software. What do you guys think about a Halloween deadline? That will give everyone some time for trial and error (I'm sure I'll have plenty of those). Should we start a thread in the musicians forum to claim our song choices?

Count me in too, my horrific voice notwithstanding.... maybe just an instrumental That would be cool too. As far as voices go, I'm no Brian Wilson myself..... I'm about to head to the beach for the rest of the week but I'm gonna start thinking about what song and maybe play around with arrangements. Ya'll do the same. OF course all are invited to participate regardless of skill level. It's all for fun....

Not professionaly of course...Have you ever played in a band that covered the Beach Boys, if so, what tunes? A few years ago a little garage band I was playing in took part in a project that was put together by the posters at NineBullets.org (A Drive-by-Truckers fan site). Members of the forum contributed home recordings of DBT songs and they were put together on a compilation. It was a fun little project and the disc even made its way to the members of DBT. Would anyone be interested in a SmileySmile.com tribute project?

Melinda and Leaf are devils. Everyone spoke highly of the Lovester until these two evil fucks came along. Look through all the literature on the BB in the 60s; look through all the literature on Dennis. Nothing. Everyone loves the Lovester. If it wasn't for Melinda and Leaf (and that equally evil money-grubbing dissenter Al Jardine) we'd have The Beach Boys again. Well, okay, Carl and Dennis are no longer with us, but you know what I mean. Of course, she can't run a tour and BW doesn't seem to have the last say about what he does... Maybe they mean that?
Mike? Dr. Love? Is that you?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Interview w/ Mike and Bruce

I'm surprised Mike and Bruce gave that nerd so much time. They both know when the camera is in the room, that's for sure. Otherwise the responses would have been much different. Having spent many years in the TV news biz, it's a shame to see such underdeveloped reporters on the street. Especially in a major market like Atlanta. First clue was the limp-wristed handling of the microphone. It should be thrust towards the speakers mouth not moved around like a wet noodle. Very un-professional. Not to mention his interview job. "What's going to be your last song?" Get the hook!
That guy is usually the investigative reporter for that station. He's the one that busts local restaurants for putting cats in the food. Ahhh, Atlanta.
