51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Lowest point in the BB career? on: July 21, 2009, 07:39:36 AM
I like my Beach Boys partly because of the low points. For me they not only are the greatest band that ever existed, but also the silliest, the most tragic, the most litigious, and the most honest. That does not mean that I don't regret SMiLE being left unfinished in 1967, mind, or the major health issues that hit the Wilson brothers. But somehow it's a mirror image of how any family functions, with lots of inexplicable stuff, disillusions, bad periods, and so on. The genius and the low points are inseparable.

Just my three cents.

I agree. I try to explain to friends my age why it is that I am so interested in this band. The Beach Boys story has it all, success, murder, drug use, divorce, theft, abuse, hair-brained concepts, and a ton of excellent music. It's like a rock 'n' roll soap opera.

Not this sh*t again. Maybe we should all go back to talking about Dennis' hair.

I remwember reading somewhere that "Meant for You" was the first track Mike cut vocals to when he returned from his trip to India,  I dont have a reference so I'm not sure how true it is.

Wasnt it an attempt to get Brian involved with recording again?

I really loved this song.....when I was 7.
59  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Top 10 songs you wish were completed on: May 05, 2009, 08:09:10 AM
What boot....outtake etc is Out in the Country on?   I have heard a LOT of the bits and pieces fromover the years but don't believe I have that one.  It would be neat to put together a comp with the Redwood/BB connection to include this and the stuff that wound up on BB albums.

(we can talk boots but not engage in trading or selling ...right?)

Landlocked is what I have it on.

Trombone Dixie was unfinished? Did it have unused lyrics or something? My vote would have to go to Out in the Country. I've been tempted to try my own version on GarageBand.

The Soft Bulletin is one of my favorite all time albums. Such an amazing sound. Scott Bennett of Lucky Old Sun fame played bass on The Soft Bulletin. Thanks for posting.

Howard Stern talked yesterday on his show about speaking for a while with Mike at the event. He said that Mike was a stand up guy and that the two had a nice conversation. Howard said that Mike told him thanks for being vocal about TM, that it showed the world that "it wasnt just for pussies".
63  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike at David Lynch's TM Summit Today on: April 03, 2009, 07:22:20 AM
Howard Stern is going to be there as well, he's been talking about it on his show for a couple weeks now.
64  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Petting Sounds of Brian Haas on: March 26, 2009, 07:53:33 AM
I'm 32 now and have been a Beach Boys fan since my mid 20's. Before that, my musical world consisted of jam-oriented rock. I saw Jerry with the Dead a few times before he passed. I got to catch a bunch of Allman Brother Shows and I saw over 70 Widespread Panic shows (I live in Atlanta and the bulk of their touring was in the southeast). Anyways, although I dont make it out to nearly as many shows as I used to , I still like to stay informed on the scene. I logged into www.Jambands.com this morning and was surprised by one of the headlines. If you havent heard Jakob Fred Jazz Odyssey before you're missing out. I havent heard this record yet so I cant vouch for it yet. Here's the story posted...

The Petting Sounds of Brian Haas

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey keyboardist Brian Haas has made his new solo album Petting Sounds available for free download on his official homepage. The album is an improvised symphony for solo piano and is said to have been recorded in one continuous session. The album was laid down in Ojai, CA with engineer and co-producer Teddy Jack Russell last year with the same UA mixing board that was used for the Beach Boys’ masterpiece Pet Sounds (hence the album’s name). JFJO has also confirmed a handful of new dates focusing on the Midwest, East Coast and South. The band’s 15th Anniversary Tour will continue at Norman, OK’s The Deli tomorrow. Download the album for Free at ww.BrianRoyHaas.com.

This seems to be the best of the live boots around (I may be wrong, but its definitely the best one I have). Makes you wonder how many other shows during this era were recorded by the band.

"There are tomatos all over my gate!". If you havent heard the Alternate Brian Wilson version of Smile, look for it. He incorporates some of the argument into his mix, its my favorite fan mix that I have heard.

He wrote some new songs with Brian in the mid 90s.

Did any of that material end up on an album?
69  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower and Surf's Up To Be Reissued on Vinyl! on: March 12, 2009, 12:19:33 PM
Probably the same 2000 digital master as the Two-fer CDs

Now, if they reissued Holland with the Mount Vernon EP in its original cartoon sleeve, that would be lovely.

Funny that it probably won't ever happen because Holland is the only album of the three to contain a hit single.

I just found a copy of Holland with the Mt. Vernon EP in the original sleeve at a vinyl shop called Low Yo-Yo Stuff here in Atlanta for $8 a few weeks ago. Great condition other than the previous owners name written on Ricky's face. Smiley

A bit off topic, but I have a copy of Today where the previous owner had reviewed every song and made notes of to the right of the song titles on the back cover. He even dated each review with the earliest being in 1970 and the latest being 1983! It also appears that he'd loaned the album out to a friend who wrote his own little reviews, often in direct opposition to what the other guy thought!

After Kiss me baby he writes: "Pure Brian at his peak of Spectorian glory"
after In The Back Of My Mind he writes: Brian in an introspective mood! And the other guy writes: "More like suicidal"

Priceless!!!!

Thats funny, sounds like someone was a little high....

I'm really surprised that TA didnt go on as a lyricist. I know that Pet Sounds wasnt a huge success at the time but it seems like anyone that is picked by Brian Wilson would have been sought by others. Thanks for the info on the Roger Nichols album.Swingin sixties indeed. I'll keep an eye out for this one.

Not much info about him other than the old interview from the Pet Sounds list. Did he return to advertising for good or did he work with any other artists?

I'd be hesitant to say that any drug will make someone more creative. It will however show you another perpective on life and I think people that were already creative can use this perspective to their advantage.
75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy cover on: February 27, 2009, 02:35:22 PM
Golden Smog is one of my favorite bands. I can highly recommend "Down By The Old Mainstream" and "Weird Tales"., although neither contain that version of Love and Mercy.
Not sure if I am supposed to do this but what the hell.....give it a listen
