201  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: August 28, 2021, 09:53:27 AM
I'm still taking a lot of this in and haven't actually listened to the whole thing in full yet (I've heard most of it though).  A lot of the new stuff serves as a curiosity more than anything as a lot of the unreleased stuff sounds a tad unfinished.  And "songs" like "My Solution" would never stand on its own on any proper Beach Boys album.  I'm not complaining though.  Really glad they put this thing out though as it's well worth the purchase.  I don't know how much casual listeners will get out of it (other than the actual Sunflower and Surf's Up material themselves) but for the diehards like us this is an absolute treat.  Great job Howie and thanks for fighting to put this set out.  I look forward to hearing what you have in store for the Ricky/Blondie years!

Just in case we're overloading you with content and you want to start slow, check out this compilation they put out for their 50th anniversary:

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k9fmNgWFLsa30y5cV1sazVWD9-BcB17eM&feature=share

It's a good sampler of the band that covers their entire career, not just the early surfer/car hits.  It gives you a decent idea of what the band is about.  Then you can branch out and explore the other suggestions being made in this thread.  The Made In California box set that came out around the same time goes more in depth but that would be worth listening to as well.
203  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Stars & Stripes reappraisal? on: August 24, 2021, 06:00:23 AM
I had just started getting into the Beach Boys around the time this album came out.  So I kinda liked it at the time.  But yeah, this was a pretty big misfire.  A couple of the songs were alright such as "Caroline, No", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Don't Worry Baby" and "I Can Hear Music", but overall we should have gotten an album with new, original music instead of this.  Especially since Brian was involved at the time.

Side story: I remember the grocery store I worked at around this time had played every song on their radio at one point or another.
204  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Song: \ on: August 13, 2021, 06:52:46 AM
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect that the only Beach Boys album that contains a version of that song is "Songs From Here and Back," a 2006 release that the BBs did through Hallmark.

That's correct.  He and his band re-recorded a pretty clunky version of it for that compilation.

I never really understood the appeal of this song.  The only thing remarkable about it is that Bob Dylan appears in one version of it.  Otherwise it's a pretty forgettable song.  🤷‍♂️
205  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: July 30, 2021, 05:49:29 AM
The alternate This Whole World is up on YouTube. It is absolutely terrific, has an easygoing, relaxed lead vocal with different phrasing and a couple of different lyrics, different-style backing vocals near the end and the close is pure '60s Sunshine Pop gold. The best FF nugget yet released!

Very thankful they did not end up going with this cheeseball ending.  The a capella tag in the final version always gave me chills.  This ending sounds more at home capping an episode of The Love Boat instead.  Still it's fascinating to listen to.  Can't wait for this release to come out!
206  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Gershwin Album on: July 28, 2021, 06:43:48 AM
I never for the life of me ever really could get into this one.  There are some nice moments here and there such as "The Like in I Love You" and the bossa nova tinged "S'Wonderful", but overall I found the album to be a tad boring.  "I Loves You, Porgy" is just cringeworthy to listen to and "I Got Rhythm" with its clunky, bland, and workmanlike arrangement was a big disappointment.  Seek out and listen to the Happenings' 1967 endlessly superior version instead.

Despite this I still preferred this to the forgettable Disney album though.
207  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: “A Postcard from California” Reissues on: July 28, 2021, 06:36:04 AM
Wow. So yet another tweaked version of “Waves of Love.” This is getting insane. How many versions have now been officially released? Five?

Yeah, exactly.  It's not even that remarkable of a song.  Al infamously tried to get Brian to include it on TWGMTR and Brian instead ran out of the studio to avoid confrontation with him.  🤣
208  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: “A Postcard from California” Reissues on: July 26, 2021, 08:34:47 PM
How many times is he going to tamper with that "Waves of Love" song?
209  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Acapulco Girls on: July 26, 2021, 11:39:51 AM
This song was recorded and released back in the late 90's.  Mike and Bruce were probably most likely asked to appear on the track rather than it being their idea.  Pretty sure the band's legacy wasn't really tarnished over this song.  🤷‍♂️

211  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Goin’ On on: July 10, 2021, 11:20:58 AM
I always liked this song and thought it easily was one of their best later-period tracks.  For all the flack this album gets (and don't get me wrong, this is not a great album by any stretch) as well as L.A. (Light Album), if you compiled the best songs from both albums you'd have a pretty decent effort.  Something like this:

KTSA
Good Timin'
Some of Your Love
Full Sail
Angel Come Home
Livin' With a Heartache
Sunshine
Lady Lynda
Baby Blue
Goin' On

No "Love surrounds me"? That to me is one of the greatest later tracks the Beach Boys ever did.

Oh right.  I knew I forgot one of them.  You can swap it out with "Sunshine" or "Some of Your Love".  😊

Don't swap out "Sunshine" - that would be a travesty.

"Some Of Your Love" is pretty good, but these days I can't help hearing "Mike Come Back to L.A." and it puts me off that song a little!

Oh fine then.  🤣  Assuming a single LP can fit all these songs on then we don't have to drop anything.  Or make one of these songs strictly the B-side for the "Goin' On" single if it can't fit on the album.  Then it could have served as the "bonus track" for the eventual CD release.

"Some Of Your Love" is unquestionably lightweight, but I still enjoy listening to it whenever it pops in my shuffle.  And "Summer Of Love" definitely seems to borrow a thing or two from it.
212  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys channel is coming back to SiriusXM on: July 10, 2021, 10:34:00 AM
It's great that SiriusXM brought back this station and how they're not afraid to dig deep with the track listing.  However I have to admit I get quickly fatigued by this station after only a few minutes of listening to it.  Not sure what it is.  Maybe it's the jarring track listing that jumps all over the place.  One minute you're listening to an extremely early track like "Stoked" followed by something off of TWGMTR.  Or maybe it's because I keep hearing the same tracks over and over again (I'm looking at you, "Help Me Rhonda").  Or maybe it's the fact that I've heard most of these songs so many times before in my life that I've become desensitized to them.  Not trying to complain though; I just think this station works best for me in small doses. Anybody else feel this way?

Another BW tribute album by a bunch of artists I've never heard of.  🤷‍♂️

I’d like to welcome you to the Old Farts Club. I’ve had the same indifference for about 20 years now and it worries me not one dot. 👍

Think I've already been there for quite some time now.  🤣  There's been enough BW/BB tribute albums by no-name indie artists to make an endless supply of drink coasters for everyone to go around.  Aren't there any relevant artists that would like to participate in one of these things...?
214  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys channel is coming back to SiriusXM on: July 05, 2021, 10:44:03 AM
Every time I've put it on I've heard "Help Me Rhonda" and "Spirit of America" more times than necessary on any given day.

Although hardly a remarkable song in and of itself, I wouldn't call it one of the band's worst songs either.  There are too many contenders for that.  The fact that Ringo plays the drums on it is pretty cool; too bad they didn't have him drum on a better song though.  🤷‍♂️
220  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian and family on Kelly Clarkson's show 6/24 (?) on: June 23, 2021, 06:59:56 AM
It's been confirmed on BW's social media:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CQdq7dqgv3A/?utm_medium=copy_link

Conspicuously it looks like Brian will only be appearing in video form with the Wilson girls singing along with him.  Not sure why he's not with them in person unless his health or age are factors.

Cool insight!  I plan on picking this release up as All Things Must Pass is easily one of my all-time favorite albums.  Will probably pass on the deluxe set as I honestly don't care all that much about outtakes which seems to be the meat of the bonus stuff.
222  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Listography: Ranking The Beach Boys albums on: June 11, 2021, 06:00:29 AM
Been a sub for a long time so have been waiting for this....

https://youtu.be/RwydwQvoFRE

It's an interesting list and perspective from these guys.  It would seem that their last album That's Why God Made the Radio scored a little lower than I would have put it.  But still some decent lists.

I am just reading those notes now.  Very insightful.  Thanks for sharing!  The Harrison camp has been fairly quiet on any new releases concerning All Things Must Pass but I imagine if they have any plans for a full album remix we'll hear of them hopefully soon.

Well speak of the devil...

Is it just me or does it seem as if the Beatles' overall popularity has cooled a little these days?  Not that I put much stock in Rolling Stone but it was a tad eye-opening when Sgt. Pepper unceremoniously dropped off the top spot of their "500 Greatest Albums" list and fell into the teens.  And besides that they just don't seem to be getting quite as much general attention they usually get.  I don't have much evidence to base this off but just have noticed that vibe in the last few years.
