"Rio Grande" is probably the one thing I still thoroughly enjoy listening to the most off his 1988 album.  Definitely a miniature homage to his SMiLE compositions and easily one of the more adventurous songs he put out in his later years.  Definitely miles better than "Happy Days" or "The Waltz".  It probably would have fit in nicely on That Lucky Old Sun
77  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian at number 57 in new Rolling Stone greatest singers list on: January 07, 2023, 10:20:35 AM
Rolling Stone has always been a joke, and they've only gotten worse over the years.  Seems like they're more interested in virtue signaling than anything else with their more recent lists.  Although Brian's placement on this list seems about right.  Even though he sang like a bird in his prime, Carl was always the better singer and he absolutely should have placed on this list.

This doesn't really excite me much. Seeing a bunch of bands, probably current and from yester year, performing classic BB songs. With or without whosever left, this strikes me as a worse effort that the 25th anniverrsary special from Hawaii...which wasn't really that good. We shall see. Maybe they can have that obnoxious guy play Do It Again, and have him strut around the stage with Mike screaming "DO IT"...or have Stamos mug for the cameras "playing" a guitar that isn't even plugged in. Would have been better to just have whose left, with Blondie and Ricky too, play a few classics...just that alone would have been enough IMHO.

I dunno.  Let's see who shows up.  The tribute concert they did for Brian back in 2001 was quite good, featuring a stellar performance of "The Warmth of the Sun" by Vince Gill and a lovely reading of "Surfer Girl" by Paul Simon.  And speaking of Simon, his tribute concert they recently aired wasn't bad.

Cool tidbit and think exciting news regarding the Televised Beach Boys Tribute Concert  from a new Rivers Cuomo/Weezer interview.
https://consequence.net/2022/12/weezer-interview-sznz-rivers-cuomo/3/

“ What’s next for Weezer?
We have a big tour announcement coming soon. And in the “pure fun” department, we’re going to participate in this television tribute to The Beach Boys. So we’re in the midst of figuring out which Beach Boys songs we want to cover, and oh my God, it’s incredibly fun. It feels so good to play and sing these songs. And I’m reminded of how much I used them as a model when I was first starting out writing songs for Weezer”

I’ve always wished and hoped for Weezer/Rivers Cuomo Brian Wilson collaboration project, although that may never happen, excited to see/hear what Weezer comes up with and does for the tribute song(s).

That would be the perfect opportunity for them to dust off this little track they did:

Did they ever announce who won?

I think they announce the 3 winners on January 6.

Cool.  I just hope one of the winners sang the song with a death metal vocal.  🤣

It's definitely an underrated track.  It's also the most "un-Beach Boys"-sounding track they ever did.  Surprised that it overtook "Marcella".

Here's hoping whoever wins thinks outside the box and delivers an amazing vocal no one would expect!
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sail On Sailor box set on: December 04, 2022, 11:48:53 AM
Did anyone who purchased this set directly from the Beach Boys' store receive it yet?  And if you have, did they send you a shipping confirmation email from them prior to delivery?  I've received neither the box set nor any email informing me that it's on its way.  This is so frustrating.   Embarrassed

No, no set & no shipping confirmation for me either. All I got was the e-mail saying I’d get a shipping confirmation & that was many weeks ago.

Did you receive your set though or are you still waiting on it?

Still waiting

Well I just got confirmation that this damn thing has been shipped.  But seeing that it's currently in TX and I live in GA, chances are it will be a few days before I can get my hands on it.  Needless to say I won't be ordering anything directly from their official store again.  It's Amazon all the way.

I'm sure Bruce has held all kinds of records before he places them onto a turntable.

...zing!
88  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1980's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Keepin' The Summer Alive on: November 27, 2022, 10:06:49 AM
I've been listening to this album for the first time in the last few weeks. Maybe it helps to come in with very low expectations, but I'm enjoying it. KTSA is a fun if somewhat lunkheaded summer song and Goin' On is wonderful. When Girls Get Together has dumb lyrics but the arrangement is fascinating. Santa Ana Winds is enjoyable and Al sounds really nice on it. And Carl sounds great throughout the album, even on the tracks I'm not as crazy for.

Funny enough, the track I'm the most obsessed with is Sunshine. I really like it! Fun, hooky, jazzy with lots of unexpected curve balls in the arrangement and great group vocals. Surprised it doesn't get a bit more love around here.

It's certainly a lower-tier album for the group but in and of itself it's not all that bad.  Just don't go about comparing it to their stronger albums.  About half the songs range from "good" to "okay", while the other half is easily skippable.  I still think the title track, while unremarkable, is a pretty good time nonetheless.   And "Goin' On" usually manages to find its way onto most "greatest hits" compilations.

It's a lightweight album but it isn't the worst thing the band has done.
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sail On Sailor box set on: November 19, 2022, 09:43:21 AM

It's a pretty charming video.  I'm getting the feeling that this forthcoming box set is going to be even better than the Feel Flows set.  As long as the overall mix isn't punishing me with too much treble then we should be good.  :-)
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sail On Sailor box set on: November 07, 2022, 05:30:46 AM
For some reason there's not a lot going on here about "Carry me home" so I would just like to express again how much I appreciate this "new" version. Much more than I ever liked listening to the bootlegged version (for obvious reasons). Listening to this release blew my mind. Blondie and Dennis sharing the lead is very effective and it shoows (as does the In Concert album) how well Blondie's voice fit in with the Beach Boys blend. Man, if only Blondie and Ricky would've stayed with the band.
Thanks Alan, Mark, Howie, Beach Boys and everyone else who made sure we can enjoy this beautiful recording.

Agree, it sounds fantastic. What a song to be left unreleased for 50 years or so. I heard the leaked Brother Rarities one but this version blows it away.

Yeah, this song would have fit right at home on either CatP: So Tough or Holland albums.  I get the feeling this song was never probably finished though but it still sounds fantastic.
91  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Johnny Depp & Jeff Beck re-recorded Dennis Wilson on: November 02, 2022, 06:23:02 AM

While Beck is being kind of disrespectful in a kind of flippant way (kind of talking about Brian as if he died years ago or something) in this new interview, I'm also referencing what Beck said after the 2013 tour.

I think Beck still claiming to be confused about Brian's deal *after* the 2013 tour made no sense, and reeked either of him being a d**k in a pretty malicious way, or being aloof and clueless to a perplexing degree. Nobody on Beck's team did any due diligence to understand Brian's deal? He professed to be a fan, had already done that Musicares Brian tribute gig several years prior.

I think Beck signed on to that tour out of self-interests. Which, fair enough obviously. But to go on after the tour and trash Brian in a very non-sympathetic, non-empathetic, and just uncool way, it just left a really bad taste.

And if Beck, in this new interview, is saying he was off-put by Brian back during that Musicares show *years* before he signed on for the 2013 tour, then that makes even less sense. It sounds like Beck wanted a big pat on the back from Brian for covering one of his songs. If you knew ANYTHING about Brian (see: the story about Brian signing a CD for Don Henley, among many others), you'd understand that that's not what's going to happen. And if you knew ANYTHING about Brian, you'd know that his personality and Beck's are SO opposite each other, it's amazing they could ever work together in ANY capacity. As someone pointed out back in 2013, even both being "car guys", they're not even into remotely the same type of cars!

I'm not saying people who have weird or bad interactions with Brian should never be able to discuss such things. When Beck talks about Brian, he talks about him the way someone who knows *nothing* about Brian would talk about him. And that's pretty s**tty for someone who has benefited from their professional association with him.

As was also pointed out back in 2013 when Beck seemed confused or miffed or whatever that there weren't more tour dates or that Brian wasn't doing anything with the studio tracks they had cut, it's worth pointing out that Beck has soured MANY working relationships with others over the years, and has seen a number of projects he's been involved with canceled/shelved, etc. One that always comes to mind is the "guitar concerto" he recorded with McCartney. Not one note of that has ever seen the light of day, and McCartney has never worked with Beck since (or before for that matter really).

I already made my feelings known about Depp in another Beck/Depp thread, so I won't belabor the point again, other than to say it makes total sense that Beck would team up with Depp both on a personal and professional level.

Fair enough and I don't completely disagree but again this all sounds like my initial reaction: it's just Jeff Beck being Jeff Beck.  Maybe he's coming off dismissive and cantankerous about his encounters with Brian, but it doesn't really seem worth getting too bent out of shape over.  This idea that Beck and his people are expected to fully and completely understand Brian's situation and cater wholly to it is not realistic, especially when egos are involved.  Perhaps the Beck/Wilson pairing could be described as a cautionary tale of being careful about meeting your heroes.

And let's not undermine the fact that his new album with Depp has three songs written by the Beach Boys (two BW songs and one from Dennis).  I think that speaks for itself in terms of Beck and Depp's appreciation towards the group.  And that matters more to me than any curmudgeonly commentary from Beck himself.
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Johnny Depp & Jeff Beck re-recorded Dennis Wilson on: October 31, 2022, 04:39:46 AM
New interview with Jeff Beck still complaining about Brian,  still not understanding Brian's deal after 87 years, and not remembering the title to either "Surf's Up" or whatever the other song is he's talking about (You Still Believe In Me?). Watching him try to speak with reverence for Brian and Dennis while talking s*it at the same time is,  well,  something.

https://youtu.be/n9uhPikAGgI

Sounds like it's just Jeff Beck being Jeff Beck.  I don't really detect any true malice in his rhetoric.  It's readily apparent that he holds some appreciation towards the band but isn't a diehard like us and just wasn't prepared for Brian's idiosyncrasies.  Which is completely reasonable.  I for one really dug the tour he and Brian did awhile back and it was lovely to hear them all perform "Surf's Up" together.

In fairness Vince Gill wasn't familiar with "Surf's Up" either when he was asked to perform it at Brian's 2001 tribute concert.  He assumed it was just another fun-in-the-sun beach tune and was in for a rude awakening when he first played the track.

It's so nice to finally have an official release of this underrated song.  This earthy, folky track hints at what could have been if the Beach Boys had continued to explore this path during that period of the band instead of careening straight back into caricatures of themselves with 15 Big Ones.  Oh well.
94  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love at The Grammy Museum - L.A. - 11/16/22 on: October 31, 2022, 04:24:59 AM
Would be curious to hear what he has to say about this period of the band.  Out of all the band members he always seemed to be the most resistant towards revisiting this period.

This is hitting vinyl at independent record stores on 11/25/2022. https://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/15488

As completely indifferent towards this album as I am, I admit I wouldn't mind snagging a vinyl copy of it.

Thanks for the link; I was not familiar with your site until now.  Have you considered adding setlist information to your site?  Doesn't seem like anyone has kept up with it since the days of Eric Aniversario's website.  Would be nice to have all of that information in one place.

It's a nice cover of an underrated song.  I kinda wish they did more with the instrumental last half of the track (the horn part is sorely missed here), but this is still pretty well done.  Beck and Depp also cover "Don't Talk (PYHOMS)" and "Caroline, No" on that same album.  Glad to see that Beck's rather awkward experience he had touring and recording with BW never deterred his overall appreciation for the group.

To answer the topic brought up above, yes, the Analogue Productions releases (vinyl and CD/SACD hybrid) are legit, licensed releases. I'm not sure what would possibly make anyone think they're not. They were/are sold through legitimate retailers, and have known names that remastered them.

They weren't discussed a ton here, but I think that was just a confluence of a bunch of things (the 2012 reissues being relatively recent at the time, not a super huge interest here in high-rez, and the incomplete nature of both reissue campaigns).

The current mode of running through the catalog and getting the albums back out there in physical form and also presenting a ton of outtakes (e.g. Feel Flows and Sail on Sailor) is ideal, and I certainly hope we continue to see the 70s covered in one form or another.
I bought all of he analogue production masters as high res downloads. They are easily the best editions of those albums. I don’t expect them to be bettered. Absolutely vital purchases.

I think it was also Analogue Productions that handled the 200g vinyl release of Holland that I also own.  That sucker's a pretty thick piece of wax; it could take a bullet and still probably play fine.  🤣

And finally we get the studio recording of "We got Love". I really like that one, especially that pedal steel intro! As you certainly know, an early pressing of "Holland" featuring that song was released in Germany, yet the recording was never used again on any sets afaik.

I think Analogue Productions used it on a vinyl release. Found it here https://www.discogs.com/release/8957660-The-Beach-Boys-Holland

I wasn't aware of that. Thank you! But I guess they didn't get to use the master tapes but worked with the "bootlegged" version, did they?

Unfortunately I've never come across an affordable copy so haven't heard it. I'd imagine it's the official version sanctioned by Brother as AP are a legit company but not 100%.

It's on the SACD too https://www.discogs.com/release/8864074-The-Beach-Boys-Holland

Thread here http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,19211.0.html

Yep I own the SACD version.  The studio version is quite nice although the live version of it sounds, well, livelier.
