HCTN '79 is the outright winner.

1. HCTN dixo style.

2. Fun Fun Fun with Status Quo.

3. Wipe Out with the Fat Boys.

I think THD has it about right.

No love for Bluebirds Over the Mountain (prior post)?  I really love that track.

Was Hey Little Tomboy a single?

If you factor in the B-sides, Here Comes the Night is out of contention thanks to Baby Blue.

Not sure, but it's got to be stuff after 1980.

I always liked the 1979 "Here Comes The Night". The only problem with it was the length of the album version. Anyway...

"Happy Endings" - the group finally records with the great Little Richard - one of their early musical heroes - and instead of recording/releasing a great rocker, they do a ballad! Ugh...

"It's Getting Late" - not a good choice as the follow up to "Getcha Back". While not perfect by any means, "California Calling" should've been released hot on the heels of "Getcha Back"...

"That's Why God Made The Radio" - I know they had to go with this one (because it's the title track and they thought it was great), but "Spring Vacation", which I like a lot, had a better chance at charting/selling if it would've been released IN THE SPRING!

Huh? Little Girl I Once Knew?? Wow, what don't you like about it? (It's probably my own personal favourite pre-Pet Sounds track, period, let alone favourite single).

Anyway...

Here Comes The Night (disco)
Fun Fun Fun (with the Quo)
Wipe Out

I kinda like the late-70s disco version of Here Comes the Night.

Never understood how they could choose Tears in the Morning as a single. I don't mind the song per se but come on, a single from your supposed comeback album?

Kokomo
Rock and Roll music
Peggy Sue

I remember seeing a video for the limp wristed cover of Crocodile Rock, did it get released as a single?

And special mention to the B-side that must not be named of Cal Dreamin'

Peggy Sue b/w Hey Little Tomboy
Rock And Roll Music b/w TM Song
Summer of Love

Here Comes the Night '79 may be dreck, but Baby Blue on the B-side is transcendent at least.

Yeah, I don't quite know why, but I just don't like the song. I dig it on a production level, but nothing else about it appeals to me. It just seems overly dorky to me and not in an endearing way. I think it would have worked much better as an album track than a standalone single..... I dunno. Maybe I'll go give it a few more listens. I certainly would never call it bad. I mean Summer Of Love is BAD but in the most entertaining way possible and it IS damn catchy at the same time.

Didn't they try "Under The Boardwalk" from SIP as a single too?  I think that should make the list.

Really?  I think "Spring Vacation" is one of the weakest songs on the album, it's catchy but forgettable, it's generic fluff that makes decent album filler but nothing more.  Plus lyrically, it's basically the same as "Isnt It Time" which is a better song in my opinion.  "Summer's Gone" probably would have made a good single.

Yeah, I really liked "Spring Vacation" from the first time I heard it. Love the intro, it might be Mike's best vocal on the album, nice melody, it has a great hook, and the lyrics don't bother me. It makes me feel good when the song comes on.  Frankly, I expected more songs like this on the album. Not to get into the whole thing again, but I like these types of songs to counter the heavier ones; it helps the effect you get - both ways.

"Spring Vacation" sounds like the most commercial, single potential song on the album, to me anyway. I liked "Isn't It Time" a lot for awhile, but it kind of wore off for me. And, yeah, I would've loved to hear "Summer's Gone" on the radio. I don't care if it isn't your typical single. It's in the top two or three best songs on the album, maybe THE best song on the album. Get it out there for everybody to hear...

I'm going to have to disagree and say that Summer's Gone wold have been a horrible single. I think the average BB fan would want a catchy, upbeat song to be their single from a new album celebrating 50 years together.

But to stay on topic
Be True To Your School
Wipe Out
Summer Of Love (didn't know this was a single)

Was the Stamosised Forever put out as a single? I know they made a video for it. If so that can share the joint No1 spot with Problem Child.

East Meets West

Happy Endings

I would pick the singles from the nineties albums but I forget which were actual singles in stores. I know Fun Fun Fun was with Status Quo vinyl too.

3 from each decade, worst up top.

1960s:
Ten Little Indians
Bluebirds Over the Mountain
Be True to Your School

1970s:
Everyone's in Love with You
Here Comes the Night
Rock and Roll Music

1980s:
East Meets West
Happy Endings
Wipe Out

1990s:
Summer of Love
Little Deuce Coupe
Hot Fun in the Summertime

2000s+:
Isn't it Time
That's Why God Made the Radio
uhh... Isn't it Time? :lol

I'm surprised to see East Meets West on several people's lists. I think that's one of the best songs they did in the 1980s (although I know that doesn't say much).

Ok, well to me personally the chorus kicking back in after the mid-song musical interlude is one of the greatest moments in their entire catalogue, but each to their own... Hell, Holland is your favourite Beach Boys album so I'm certainly not about to question your superb taste! :)

These are the singles I find immensely boring:

1. Bluebirds over the Mountains (even the video, while being kind of entertaining, didn't help for tolerating the song)
2. Happy Endings (as Mr. John Stone, I don't get how it turned out that Little Richard sang with the Boys the slow number, not sth. from fast songs)
3. Tears in the Morning (since the title of the thread doesn't specifically mention of naming only US or UK singles, so here we have BJ dreck. Plus I heard that the Netherlands is like the the 3rd main music-charting country. Then go Australia, Germany, New Zealand & the rest)

Definitely Rock and Roll Music/TM Song. It's like they deliberately picked the two worst songs on the album.

If we're judging singles by both sides, my vote goes to Susie Cincinnati b/w Everyone's In Love with You.

Definitely Rock and Roll Music/TM Song.
I enjoy both of these songs & regarding TM Song, it's my most favorite 15BO track. Generally, I like almost every suggested song here, f.ex., East Meets West is the real treat. Same is Rock & Roll to the Rescue with groovy aeroplane sounds at the end.

Weirdly, I think the first two Beach Boys songs I heard were Wipeout and Happy Endings.

I know I'm supposed to dislike "Wipeout", but I don't. It's not that I seek it out, but I do have it on a comp (the later years) in my car. It's very Brian, I sometimes find myself singing  :-[  the "wipe it out wipe out, wah wah wah" part. I don't know....it's fun, it's harmless. I think, like "Forever" with Stamos, it brought some new fans to the band; that video was played a lot.

'Wipeout' is not that bad if you just judge it for what it is. Of course it's not a good Beach Boys song, but as a hip hop novelty song, it's fun enough.

I think so too. It's a very Friends song overall, which can't be bad as far as I'm concerned. Don't mind the lyrics at all, they're funny.

Was it? I can't find it in my British Charts book and i can't remember it being a hit. I can't find it in Brad Ellliot's list of charting BB records either.
In truth, I had to wait another 30 years to discover it came from an album called Sunflower...

Edit: Sorry, phirnis, you're quite right. I see it went top 5 in my home country of the Netherlands. I hadn't moved there yet so it didn't register. Well done, the Dutch! :=)

Number 4 in the Netherlands which is why it is occasionally included on compilations I guess.

I just looked it up, "Summer Of Love" was originally the B-Side to "Hot Fun In The Summertime" and issued later as an A-Side.

My choices for worst A-sides are: "Summer Of Love", "Hot Fun In The Summertime" and "Child Of Winter". I just listened to "Happy Endings" for the first time, that is, I only listened to parts of it, because it is terrible. An A/B comparison with "Child Of Winter" though made me choose the latter.

Haha. i only saw this topic an hour ago. There's an awful lot to plough through over here. I've abandoned any thoughts of investigating the Smile discussion----life's too short!

On the subject of awful, the only BB single that makes me cringe is "Happy Endings". Others were unfortunate for different reasons ("Ten Little Indians", "Then I Kissed Her" in '67) but nothing comes anywhere close to "Happy Endings" for sheer awfulness. Evidently two plusses can make a minus.

I kind of can't believe anyone is listing anything from the 60s or even 70s (sans the '78 "Here Comes The Night", maybe) over anything from the 80s or 90s. D =
