Title: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: grillo on April 04, 2010, 06:04:45 PM Hey, just wanted to point everyone in the direction of the new Tribute Album that Rocker put together with help from 10 performers and who knows what. Always great to hear new recordings of these old Beach Boy chestnuts! Check it out http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,7740.80.html (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,7740.80.html)
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Mr. Cohen on April 04, 2010, 08:51:43 PM Still loving that cover of "My Diane".
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Dancing Bear on April 05, 2010, 04:32:54 AM Not bad. Not bad at all.
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Paulos on April 05, 2010, 11:53:09 AM Really digging Farmers Daughter and My Diane - well done sirs and indeed all who contributed.
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: SloopJohnB on April 05, 2010, 01:19:35 PM I really like this version of "Melt Away" - nice job, Geoff/gsmile! :-D
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: gsmile on April 05, 2010, 06:56:39 PM I really like this version of "Melt Away" - nice job, Geoff/gsmile! :-D Thanks SJB! I had a lot of fun recording it...I mostly made it to try out my new Strat, which is why there's no vocals. But I think that adds a 60s lounge music quality to it. Downloading the album now; looking forward to hearing the other tracks! Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: punkinhead on April 06, 2010, 05:07:28 AM I loved That Special Feeling, I haven't heard that tune in years...great job!
I love the 'getcha back' vocals at the end Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Dancing Bear on April 06, 2010, 05:24:56 AM Wild Honey sounds as if it's sung by Brian in 1975. Great.
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: markcharles75 on April 06, 2010, 08:14:21 AM Great job you guys. Awesome. I really loved That Special Feeling. I always loved that tune. What is the lyric supposed to be ..."underneath the "what is it?" tree? I could never figure that out.
Melt Away was awesome too. There is alot of talent on this board. Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Andrew G. Doe on April 06, 2010, 09:05:26 AM 'underneath the kumani tree'.
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: matt-zeus on April 06, 2010, 10:03:41 AM It's a great little collection, i'm still dissecting all the tracks.
Thanks to those who enjoyed my rendition of 'That Special feeling'. I wanted to do a song which had potential but ultimately was never realised. Not really sure what a Kumani tree is, I figure that Brian knows it's significance.... Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Mr. Cohen on April 06, 2010, 10:30:17 AM It's kamani tree, people! http://www.canoeplants.com/kamani.html
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: hypehat on April 06, 2010, 11:08:40 AM Loved the tribute, guys. Farmers Daughter and My Diane were my faves but it was really well done. Hopefully i'll be able to help out on the next one.
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Fall Breaks on April 06, 2010, 02:54:42 PM The realization of "That Special Feeling" is my favorite too, especially the verse that begins at 1:25 - really a nice surprise! Matt-zeus, can't you take on more unfinished BW songs and do the same? "Walkin'", "I'm Begging You Please", the 69/70 version of "Back Home" perhaps? :)
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Fall Breaks on April 06, 2010, 03:01:33 PM Must also mention that the version of "Our Sweet Love" is what that song would've sounded like had it been recorded for Smiley Smile... which of course is a compliment. :)
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: punkinhead on April 06, 2010, 06:52:54 PM YOur version of that Special Feeling makes me want to add it to a fan edit of the Beach Boys Love You album, it totally fits
Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: matt-zeus on April 06, 2010, 11:44:18 PM the 69/70 version of "Back Home" perhaps? :) Ha Ha! I think that's Al's job.... I do have an arrangement for 'I'm begging you please', that's another good lost song. Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Andrew G. Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: hypehat on April 07, 2010, 04:08:32 AM the 69/70 version of "Back Home" perhaps? :) Ha Ha! I think that's Al's job.... I do have an arrangement for 'I'm begging you please', that's another good lost song. Me too! Although mines a bit of a cheat, i just weld the 'sorry baby, i guess it's time to go' from 'Sherry She Needs Me' onto it at the start, middle and for some big fade - thinking it could be a decent duet that way if you had a woman singing that part. I do love 'Beggin' You', it's so frustrating the way he stops himself on the demo. When was that done originally, 1978? Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: Mr. Cohen on April 07, 2010, 10:48:40 AM Quote Me too! We oughta boycott this guy! (of course I'm joking, I actually thought those were nice touches) Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: matt-zeus on April 07, 2010, 11:30:10 AM Quote Me too! Title: Re: SS.net Tribute Album Post by: punkinhead on April 13, 2010, 08:50:28 AM Alright, I listened more closely to the ending of Special Feeling, at first the vocal sounds like the end of This Whole World then it turns into vocals from Good Time, then the Mike bass/backing vocals from POB (song) and finally, a purposely out of tune Getcha Back vocal
