Title: Beach Boys Survivor #24 Winner: Just Once In My Life
Post by: pixletwin on March 05, 2014, 11:42:38 AM
Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  :D ).... and without further ado...

Quote
15 Big Ones is the twentieth studio album by American rock group The Beach Boys, released in July 1976. It was their first studio album in three years and the first Brian Wilson-produced album released by the band since Pet Sounds, ten years earlier. This is also the first album to feature the classic lineup of the Beach Boys (Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Al Jardine) since the mid-1960s with Bruce Johnston's temporary departure from the group.
Although Dennis Wilson suggested calling the album Group Therapy,[citation needed] and rejecting Pick Ya Up at 8[citation needed](after the outtake "I Wanna Pick You Up"), 15 Big Ones was named for their fifteen years in the business and for the fact that it had the same number of tracks.

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

This is going to be really hard, as I hate all but two songs off this album.

I'm going to have to give this album another listen, and I'll be right back before this round is over  :)

I was tempted to go with Rock and Roll Music because the album version is awful, but O think I'll give the slight edge to A Casual Look for being just so boring.

TM Song has really shitty lyrics, but holy sweet goddamn, what I wouldn't give the hear the instrumental backing track... Really playful and inventive, classic Brian Wilson. Everyone's in Love with You is sickening schmaltz and it gets my vote for this round.

Guess you all are ready to Get Tough on this one!  Not too popular with the modern crowd.  Not me.  I love this long-player.  More than Holland.  I think they improved.
.
At first I hated the idea of losing Blondie and Ricky, and it did lessen the power they had built up with the live band.  But getting Brian back proved, on record, they could improve.  This was a much bigger deal, in it's time, than is remembered or respected today.  But Hey, I'm Game.  Not many weak tracks...
.
My Maxwell's Out for:
)"Everyone's In Love With You"
I liked all the TM songs until this one came along.

This was a much bigger deal, in it's time, than is remembered or respected today.

I don't agree. I think it is remembered as being a much hyped, much anticipated album, the first highly anticipated Beach Boys album since Smiley Smile, really, and as such its failure to be anything resembling good is what put the last nail in the coffin of commercial viability of the Beach Boys.

As such, 15 BO is a pretty generally disliked album in these parts, and I think rightfully so.

Management hyped all their records, as best they could.  Beach Boys weren't exactly media darlings in 1970's America.  The Wings Tour, that got lots of front pages.  They hyped the truth.  Brian was Back!  On record for sure.  I don't remember it being much bigger than putting "Surf's Up" on a record.  Or re-releasing a record that had been out of print for years with CATP-"ST."
I'll keep it brief Marcella.  15 Big Ones was a Top Ten Hit, the only original long-player that did that in the 70's.  That was a Big Deal, not a nail in the coffin of commercial viability.  I wish the boys had supported Brian's Adult/Child idea.
.
Respect is more personal.  I respect Brian's choice to use his "Manly Voice" - It will be hard for me to pick my votes.  As I love so many.  I didn't understand your reference to "in these parts" - "like" is subjective.  Thanks for sharing your opinion.  Enjoy the game.

Okay, bang bang (again)

Brian`s Back was a sham but the marketing campaign worked. 15 Big Ones would never have become a huge hit without it in the same way that Kokomo would never have been a huge hit without Cocktail and TWGMTR would never have become a huge hit without the C50 anniversary tag applied.

I'm holding out on voting because I dislike most of the oldies versions pretty equally, but I never totally got the "Everyone's In Love With You" hate. If you don't think about the TM connection, you can just take it at face value and it becomes a nice little Mike Love girl-and-boy song.

I love almost everything that The Beach Boys recorded in the late 60s and early 70s, but this one is so boring and uninspired that it's actually one of the worst songs on one of their weakest albums.

And besides, it's just lame to put a 6 year old B-side on a new studio album.

I agree with previous comments. The duh-duh-duh background vocals destroy this one right out of the gate, and the rest of the song doesn't really make up for it.

I don't hate all of the covers on this album, but it baffles me that they couldn't have found a more interesting cross-section of 50s songs to tackle.

A Casual Look was enough was enough to get this one voted off by 17 smilers.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Blueberry Hill is nothing to write home about, but I quite like the first 45 seconds of it... a lovely vocal by Mike with a stripped-down jazzy band, and an uncharacteristic moment of restraint on the album. I wish I could hear the rest of the song done like that.

An awful, awful cover

I agree. While it would have probably been best for Brian's mental health to ease him back into the producer's chair with an album of covers, as was his desire, the unthinkable would have happened: 15 BO would be worse than it eventually became.

Speaking of awful albums, will we do 2 at a  time eliminations for SiP Pixletwin, a la the Odds and Ends collections?

See, I feel the same way, only I really rather like Battle Hymn... It's got a great bit where the bass descends a third of the way through the chorus and it never fails to tickle me. I think there's BB songs far more deserving of scorn.

Really not in favor of voting off one of my very favorite songs on 15 Big Ones.
It's mixed out of the Beach Boys version of "Good Time" - but when Spring recorded their take, the lyrics included this little hint:  Hey baby turn up the radio, the DJ just said he's playing our favorite song -"Talk To Me."  So I'm in full agreement with myself that that song should have made it to the finals!  Could, if some of you would quickly change your vote, and go along with Brian's wishes.

Not a good song and as a six year old B-side it really didn't belong on this album.

Yes, but 'Susie Cincinatti' was officially released six years before it appeared on the album. From the top of my head I can't think of any studio album (Still Cruisin' excluded, but that's more or less a compilation) that has a song that was on a single so many years before.

I don't want to hear anymore Rock 'n' Roll music. Doesn't matter how you choose it.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

+2!

Of the dismal covers on this album, I find Palisades Park one of the better ones. There's something about Carl's aggressive singing and the spooky organ on what should presumably be a light-hearted song, that actually gives it an interesting edge for me.

Join the Club bossaroo.  Doing Survivor # 24 has been No Fun.
I was stunned by the hate thrown at "Talk To Me" - Stunned by the hate of one of my cherished albums by The Beach Boys.  Now that we know for sure that at least Mike is looking in on what we are saying...  What would Brian think?  Brian and Carl and Dennis all sing beautifully on these tracks.  I was watching the '76 TV Special the other day, and Loved it!
Now, my favorite song on 15 Big Ones gets the bonk.  I will not vote this round.  What difference would it make.  I don't even need to count the votes.
I need to go meditate.  Callin' Meditation Mama for advice.  Cass, you home?

Perhaps these two tracks more than any other represent their own belief in the hope that they could get back into some fantasy early 60s mode that eventually lumbered them with the touring jukebox burden.  Just my take…

15 Big Ones might be one of the weaker Beach Boys albums, but the five songs that we've got left are actually all pretty good... But anyway, I choose for:

Back Home
Just Once in My Life (I like it, but the original version is better)

Go BACK HOME jojo. (17) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

We're not singing That Same Song anymore. (32) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Anyone else feel like this is going too slow?

Ok Here we are at the FINAL ROUND!!!! Please vote for your FAVORITE TRACK!!!!

Tally on March 25th

It's O.K.
Had to Phone Ya
Just Once in My Life

Round#1 - T M Song March 7
Round#2 - Everyone's in Love with You March 9
Round#3 - A Casual Look March 11
Round#4 - Blueberry Hill March 13
Round#5 - Talk to Me March 15
Round#6 - Rock and Roll Music March 17
Round#7 - In the Still of the Night March 19
Round#7 - Chapel of Love March 19
Round#8 - Susie Cincinnati March 21
Round#8 - Palisades Park March 21
Round#9 - Back Home March 23
Round#9 - That Same Song March 23

I won't vote for Had To Phone Ya. I am surprised it made it this far, to be honest.

It's O.K. is the Beach Boys in fine sun and fun mood... but....

Just Once In My Life always gives me goosebumps. It's a cover. But it's the perfect end to 15 big ones. The way Carl sings "I can't give you the world but I'll work hard for you girl. I'll work hard everyday. Baby don't leave me. Now say you won't leave me. Do. This. For. Me. Babe." is (imo) the most heart wrenching vocal he ever recorded.

I understand that some might detest what they feel it represents, but to me, one song has always stood out a mile on this album:

"It's OK"

I also love "Just Once In My Life" but to me it doesn't really improve on the Righteous Brothers' original.

Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #24 Final Round: 15 Big Ones
Post by: shelter on March 24, 2014, 07:51:34 AM
I like all three. But 'Just Once in My Life' isn't as good as the Righteous Brothers version. And 'Had to Phone Ya' is cool but a big lightweight. I vote for the song that actually manages to recapture some of the magic of the earliest Beach Boys hits:

It's OK.

Carl, in the finals again.  Sometimes it's my second favorite from 15 Big Ones, sometimes a tie with that roller coaster song.  Carl was the star of this album.  And I agree pixletwin, maybe his most heart felt vocal ever.  I've never heard it sung better, the song didn't even mean that much to me until I heard this version.  Carl is down on his knees begging please.  He pulled the hurt from deep down in his soul.  You've got to lose someone to get this feel.

Same here. Still, at least in both cases the song that did win is a reasonable alternative.

I'll forever think of "Had to Phone Ya" as the album's standout - it's practically Pet Sounds orchestration lyrically wrapped in Brian's post-Smile slice of life brilliance. "Just Once in My Life" is great, but compositionally, it's nowhere near as discreet in its brilliance as "Had to Phone Ya" is, and that makes the difference for me.
