Title: Beach Boys Survivor #19 WINNER: BREAKAWAY!!
Post by: pixletwin on January 22, 2014, 03:30:09 PM
Big thanks to Fall Breaks for putting together a viable list of songs to vote from. I will quote his disclaimer text:

Quote
All songs legally released. Rounds not strictly defined by eras, since I wanted about an album’s length of songs in every round. May or may not work. No guarantee that I haven’t forgot to include some obscure track. You could argue that especially the 1969-1971 “suffers” from having too many strong tracks where only one can win, but then again, only one Pet Sounds track made it to the finals as well. Version specifications have to be made for some tracks, e.g. Can’t Wait Too Long and It’s A Beautiful Day).

So... without further ado....

As usual, VOTE FOR YOUR LEAST FAVORITE SONG!!!

I will tally votes on January 24

Celebrate the News
Breakaway
Cottonfields (single version)
Soulful Old Man Sunshine
Loop De Loop (w/1998 overdubs)
San Miguel
Games Two Can Play
I Just Got My Pay
HELP Is On The Way
4th Of July
Wouldn’t It Be Nice To Live Again
Where Is She

My least fave.... San Miguel.

Lady & Sound of Free are technically DW songs, but they were included on BB comps as BB songs, so they could be included as well…

The mashup on youtube of Sail Plane Song and Loop De Loop is rather nice though as we're voting for the tracks as they appeared on the album, Loop De Loop has gotta go. Too bombastic for me.

I know it's just personal preference but it still baffles me when I see people picking the stunning - stunning - 4th of July over what is essentially throwaway fluff.

It's fun, but I Just Got My Pay is solid B-side material.

All these votes for two of Dennis' greatest ever songs!! You're all mad! I don't think I'm going to be able to visit this board much longer, it does my head in...

Celebrate The News sucks and is boring, and 4th Of July is overrated and forgetful.

But at least no one's voting for WIBNTLA. That masterpiece must win this Survivor contest

THis round has put me into a punchin' kinda mood. 4th of July is exquisite! A pox upon all of you who voted it out! (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

I'd at the very least put it ahead of Games Two Can Play.  Similar era, Brian lead, sparse vocals/production, but Where Is She has that to-die-for Brian melancholy to it.

My vote is again for Games Two Can Play, in case that wasn't clear.

I agree, especially as it's an interesting artifact in the ongoing changes in his falsetto that were taking place in those years.

COTTONFIELDS

How any of you can't be absolutely bowled over by that fade to Celebrate The News is beyond me? Whack up the volume and it's one of my favourite moments in any Beach Boys song ever! All those different instruments all sound fantastic, the drums are incredible, 'a-wum-a-num-ah, a-wum-a-num-ah' - it's just phenomenal and wayyyy better than the (admittedly brilliant) A-side.

Apprently this was a Game that more than Two could Play... 12 actually. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Unlike #17/18 we will keep this one at a one song vote.

As usual, VOTE FOR YOUR LEAST FAVORITE SONG!!!

I will tally votes on February 4th. THAT'S TOMORROW!!!

I think it's in his ten top!! And I love almost everything Dennis wrote.

Soulful Old Man Sunshine - as AGD says in his book, it's great (but it also sounds a bit like a shampoo commercial). Love it, but to me it's easily the weakest of the remaining tracks.

Celebrate The News  All these Odds-n-Ends Rounds are going to have Fabulous Finals.
...
And celebrate getting back safe from Long Island, after digging out from Monday's 9" of snow (really tough).  Now getting back for over 12" of snow today (all comfy at home).
Celebrate my Love of Snow, but this song is the weakest one left to pick from.  I do (hint, hint) love this though.

Out of two 1969 Dennis songs I never thought San Miguel would outlast celebrate the news.  My vote is for San Miguel again

I agree, celebrate the news is fantastic!

WIBNTLA? Like a lot of cousin Denny's music, he just wanted to be taken serious my Michael Edwards Love. Many of his songs were written with Mike's voice in mind, but Mike declined, wanting to share the spotlight. Rumor has it that John Lennon wrote "Imagine" with Mike's voice in mind.
Songs Dennis is confirmed to have written for Mike to sing: WIBTNLA, Forever, River Song.
Shame he never became a true songwriter for himself. Dennis' music shall always live its own life as second to one (the big chief).

WIBNTLA

THE FINAL ROUND BEGINS NOW!!!!

Saint Michael has retreated back to India to find his mojo. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Final round means it is not time to VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE SONG!!!

I will tally votes on February 11th!!!!

Breakaway
Soulful Old Man Sunshine
Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again

Round#1 - Loop De Loop (w/1998 overdubs) January 24
Round#2 - HELP Is On The Way January 26
Round#3 - 4th Of July January 28
Round#4 - I Just Got My Pay January 29
Round#5 - Where Is She January 31
Round#6 - Games Two Can Play February 3
Round#7 - Cottonfields (single version) February 4
Round#8 - Celebrate the News February 6
Round#9 - San Miguel February 8

Soulful Old Man Sunshine is great, but as has been stated previously, it's a bit too "shampoo commerical".

I love (Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again, but in the end it's a bit overlong and is hurt by the lack of guitar solo.

My absolute favorite for this round would have to be Breakaway. The complexity of layers really became apparent when Desper uploaded his analysis for us all to watch. Wonderful performances. Wonderful engineering. Wonderful production. Just about perfect in every way a beach Boys song should be.

Don't want to get my hopes up too soon...but my favorite from the start has made it to the final round.  I have really enjoyed these odds-n-ends lists.
"Soulful Old Man Sunshine" gets my vote as Best Track on the list.
.
This is one of my very favorite Carl vocals.  Until some of you made reference to it sounding like a "commercial jingle," I've never thought it nothing more than a fabulous track that should have found a place on Sunflower.  Brian and Rick did a fine job on this.  I had never heard it prior to 1998.  One of my very favorite tracks on MIC, I've just grown to love it over the years.  Like "Breakaway" a Great Up-Beat song, which would be my second choice here.  A hard choice for sure.  Carl's vocal gives "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" the edge.
.
As for "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again," while quite beautiful, it has not had enough time to grow on me yet. But is a solid #3 on the list.  We got the final three right.  Great Round.

I thought it was on course to absolutely storm this round - very disappointed to see Breakaway in the lead. I think it'd be nice if a Brian song didn't win every single round. I like Breakaway, but to me, it's not Brian at his best. It just sort of... ends. WIBNTLA is so moving - incredible song. It lived up to the hype, which is rare indeed. Dennis deserves to win this one.

Wouldn't it be Nice To live again
High on a hill
Making love again

Whoever said
That love could die
Whoever said
The very first lie
Whoever said
Goodbye
Tell me whoever said
A girl can't cry
I know I can cry
And we'll live our life alone
And I know it's all right
It's all right

I'll show you a place
That can't be seen
High above the clouds
Just you and me

I know we can live
With love
Simple and living life
Just you and me
Whoever said
Goodbye
Tell me whoever said
A man shouldn't cry
I know you can cry
And we'll live our life alone
And I know it's all right
Honey it's all right

D'you think we can live again ?
Yeah
D'you think we can live again ?
Yeah
D'you think we can live again ?
Yeah

You don't have to be a 'Brianista' to think that "Live Again" is magnificent but that "Break Away" is even better. And it doesn't "just end", it ends with a completely new section in true BBs style.

Breakaway whenever I play the chords of this song on my guitar I cant help but think what if Brian had been
able to break loose from the destructive lifestyle choices of that time, and if the song had just gotten traction to
place a top spot in the charts -- would that have given him that hope?

If you are torn between any two of these songs, please vote for breakaway it deserves your vote!

Nope. WIBNTLA deserves your vote.

WIBNTLA is one of Denny's best songs, as well as one of the best songs the BB's ever made.
As good as Breakaway is, it's not even one of Brian's best songs, and falls far short of WIBNTLA. Same with Soulful Old Man Shunshine.

Breakaway and SOMS are neither half as powerful or beautiful as WIBNTLA!

Obviously the Brianistas disagree, as they must have Brian's songs win every single round.

When, in reality, we all have different opinions. I don't think it's one of the best songs they did. It's alright, but the legacy of the song and its ties to Dennis make you vote for this song. Which is exactly what you attack "Brianistas" for doing.

Don't get me wrong, Breakaway is also a brilliant song, and it deserved to make it to the finals, same for Shunshine. But neither aren't nearly as good as WIBNTLA, and I'm just shocked that it's not a landslide win like Little Girl I Once Knew on the other thread, let alone being beaten by a song which isn't even one of Brian's best

Goin' To The Beach should have been added  >:( >:( >:(

I'm going to vote for it anyway.

Goin' To The Beach MUST win! You're insane if you don't vote for it.

Goin To The Beech not in this round.

Change his vote to Cotten Fields  :p

This has been the hardest survivor final for me so far.  All three of these songs are great...an indication how much excellent music they made during this period.

At least for now, I am going with WIBNTLA.  Since I assume three-way ties are not allowed.

Edit:  And just an aside...two of these weren't even released for decades!  Incredible.

Edit:  Changed to Breakaway.  But it pretty much depends on the last one I listen to.  Great, great songs.

You don't have to be a 'Brianista' to think that "Live Again" is magnificent but that "Break Away" is even better. And it doesn't "just end", it ends with a completely new section in true BBs style.

The fade is lovely but hardly Surf's Up. Al himself is on record as saying it feels a little under-powered, as if Brian couldn't be bothered delivering the production goods anymore. Now WIBNTLA - that ends with a completely new section in true BB's style. I'm surprised you could make that comment without realising as such.

Breakaway gets my vote. It's the last real pop single Brian wrote, an end of a era. I can even forgive the tag fading far too soon.

Here's the thing about WIBNTLA; I'd be a lot more knocked out by it if I hadn't already heard
Cuddle Up
I've Got a Friend
Love Remember Me
Barbara.

A good 50% of the song seems to have been lifted from or recycled for the above songs.

I don't really hear that, unless I make a really conscious effort to do so, and even then no, I don't really hear it. I mean a lot of Brian's 1963-65 output sounds similar - doesn't stop it being great.

I think this is going to be the first round where I strongly disagree with the outcome. I mean, Christ, what's going to win the L.A. Light album round - Shortenin' Bread?

(That last line was a joke - kind of...)

Agreed. Also, being similar to other songs isn't a reason to vote against it.
I think Good Timin' will win the Light Album round, judging by the results of this round. Trust me, the Brianistas will make sure one of Brian's songs will win no matter what. You'll see...

Yes, I know WIBNTLA also ends in a completely new section. As do hundreds of BBs songs, hence "in true BBs style". The whole point is I'm not criticising WIBNTLA (which I love)! I'm defending Break Away from your criticisms. As to what Al said- a well-known quote as it was featured in the twofer liner notes- I think people have taken it too much on board and let it affect the way they hear the song. Obviously Al was very disappointed it wasn't a hit, but it WAS a hit in the UK, and it'd have been in a hit in the U.S. too if the Beach Boys weren't such box office poison at the time.

This is such a frustrating sentiment.

Your entire message was pure opinion, but you present it as though it's fact. If anybody sees it different than you, it's because they're wrong and they have some grudge against Dennis. We're just all Brianistas who can't bear to think that a Dennis song should receive a single vote.
When, in reality, we all have different opinions. I don't think it's one of the best songs they did. It's alright, but the legacy of the song and its ties to Dennis make you vote for this song. Which is exactly what you attack "Brianistas" for doing.

Perhaps I don't drool over this song like you do, and I find "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" to be a more pleasant, enjoyable listen. Is that okay with you?

If WIBNTLA was written by anyone else, I'd still say the same thing. It's just a mind-blowing, staggeringly majestically powerful song and the fact that it doesn't even have half as many votes as Breakaway is Bullshit in my opinion

Man, if you get so frustrated over someone having a different opinion from yours, I don't think hanging around message boards is such a good idea. Seriously. I'm not a 'brianista' and I'm not even sure what it means, but I hate to be called one over and over again by you just because I happen to think Breakaway is an amazing song.  Tootsie's post is well-stated and reflects my feelings too, so I don't wanna repeat what he said. Please read it again and try to drop the childish attitude.

We are bordering on pissing off pixletwin again, using this thread to discuss "other non-voting" stuff (but is at least about a Finals Track)...Even thought about taking it to the Mainstream Arguments Thread...But it's here so I feel I must give Bubbly (not about to start calling you Tootsie Rollin' Deep, that's just...) a thumbs up.  What you are saying is "On Point!"  And Mike's Beard is saying something that all you "Dennisistas" should note.  Dennis got everything Right with "Cuddle Up"...just needed a little more work (and better lyrics Rei, but thanks for posting).  "(WIBNT)LA" should have been worked into a Suite linking the other Carl and The Passions - So Tough tracks, using other Dennis "bits" of the time.  I'm still working on a CATP-ST re-do comp.  I'll post it in an appropriate place when done.
...and again, sorry for hijacking the thread.  I'm in too much of a rant-y mood this morning.  peace

My intention is to vote for whichever track gets enough votes to push the dismal Soulful Old Man Sunshine out. Can't believe San Miguel and Celebrate The News are gone. This for me has been the most frustrating of the Survivor rounds.

Anyway enough of my moaning. I will vote for Breakaway.

Surely if (like me) you can't believe San Miguel and Celebrate the News are gone, why not help keep the Dennis flame aloft by voting for WIBNTLA? :)

Soulful is ok but rather over-praised on here. It certainly isn't better than San or Celebrate that's for sure...

This is a difficult selection for me.. aarrgh.  Both songs have their pros and cons.

Breakaway sounds great but I do feel it is missing something.  I can't quite put my finger on exactly what that is, but it doesn't feel done.  Maybe a soaring Brian falsetto at the end would have given me a sense of completion.

In my opinion WIBNTLA features the best Dennis vocal on record.. I mean he truly sounds like a Wilson brother.  Just a fantastic performance.  However, the ending is a little bit of a disappointment for me.. I was expecting some over the top harmonies or something.  The rest of the song is excellent though and what a joy to finally get the opportunity to hear it!

So for me it's a 90% completed Brian tune that had great potential vs a fully realized Dennis masterpiece with minor flaws.

My vote goes to Wouldn't it be nice to live again.

Breakaway, and it's not close for me. I would have entitled Brian's upcoming biopic Breakaway, not Love and Mercy, I think the song is pitch perfect and I just love the sentiment it is expressing. Definitely the best thing Murry had any hand in creating!

It carries a weight to it the other two do not. A very special song to me.

Sorry Break Away. Love the song, but the outro doesn't have the warmth that I think it needs to feel conclusive.

With 12 votes, Soulful Old Man Sunshine sets for good. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

With 13 votes, Dennis' Opus Magnum (Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again gains respect. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

And the winner of perhaps the most hotly contested round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR is... with 22 votes...

!!!BREAKAWAY!!!

Round#1 - Loop De Loop (w/1998 overdubs) January 24
Round#2 - HELP Is On The Way January 26
Round#3 - 4th Of July January 28
Round#4 - I Just Got My Pay January 29
Round#5 - Where Is She January 31
Round#6 - Games Two Can Play February 3
Round#7 - Cottonfields (single version) February 4
Round#8 - Celebrate the News February 6
Round#9 - San Miguel February 8
Round#10 - Soulful Old Man Sunshine February 11
Round#10 - (Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again February 11

New rounds of Survivor to start soon!!!!

My point was WIBNTLA is close to being the same quality as Surf's Up (or, arguably, equal to) - whereas great as some of Al's songs are (California is his finest hour btw), he's never written anything that comes close. Dennis made it to the top of the mountain however, with WIBNTLA and River Song, possibly Forever.

As much as I love Dennis, "wouldn't it be nice to live again" is not in the same league as surfs up. If you know anything about chord analysis, compare the two chord structures. Surf Up is far more complex. If you examine the production and the arrangement, Surf Up possesses subtleties that wouldn't it be nice to live again doesn't even come close to.

That being said, it is among Dennis' best compositions, and an equal to many of Brian's. It is definitely Dennis is best vocal pre-Pacific ocean blue.

Is a song automatically better because it has a more complex structure and/or more opportunities for chord analysis?

Entirely subjective. I do believe the craftmanship is better, yes. That can certainly be quantified. But whether the song is better (and all things abstract which that implies) is purely personal.

I've learned the melody to Surf's Up on guitar, and oh my god it was difficult. The melody might not sound like it would be very hard to play, but there are so many twists and turns that I didn't notice. Took me ages to get the whole thing down.

In terms of craftsmanship, Surf's Up is one of the most impressive pop songs ever made.

This is true. In fact it's arguably the greatest song the Beach Boys ever made which, considering they're the greatest band of all time, means it could even be said it's the greatest pop song ever, period.

However, I stand by what i said: a song isn't automatically superior to another song just because it has a more complex arrangement. Look at Til I Die - certainly in comparison to Surf's Up at least it's fairly un-complex, but I can think of few songs that are so f**king damn good!

Boooooo!!! Dennis was robbed. I've pretty much agreed with the result of every round before now, but WIBNTLA is just so, so, so much better than Breakaway - I'm actually slightly heartbroken by this result. WIBNTLA is Dennis' Surf's Up.

Every songwriter has their own Surf's Up. Susie Cincinnati is Al's.

naw, its kona coast  :hat  ;D

Don't agree with either of you. Al's Surf's Up is either Lady Lynda or Don't Fight The Sea. Though neither is in the same league as WIBNTLA and Surf's Up

WIBNTLA is not in the same league as Surf's Up. That's what I was getting at.

Surf's Up is a work of art. WIBNTLA is a sappy, cliche-ridden love ballad. It's enjoyable, but clunky.

I think they're both perfect songs. To each their own I guess ;D

That part where the solo starts, and after a few measures the solos come in behind it? Beautiful. Love the flute jam at the end too. I've seen some who aren't the biggest fans, which I understand, but its justso unexpected to hear the song break down into that. Love the song.

I created an edit of WITNTLA that extends extends the intro by a measure, removes the guitar solo (as it were), and fades out a wee bit into the end jam. For me it tightens up the song and makes it much more enjoyable.

A big +1 to that - it's really, really cool; thanks Stephen and Will C - even happily suprised myself by during the singalong; think I'd pretty well, in fact.

CAN NOT WAIT for the under construction items to be revealed  ;D

Don't you like the guitar solo? That's my favourite section of the song. The part of the song I dislike is the 'I know I/you can cry' part and the floundering afterwards.
